Senior quarterback Warren Moon ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third Monday, then Washington survived a furious late rally by intercepting two Michigan passes to give the Huskies an upset 27-20 triumph over the Wolverines in the 64th Rose Bowl game.

Moon, a 6-foot-2, 195-pounder from Los Angeles, ran two yards for the opening touchdown, added a second on a one-yard keeper and then hit Spider Gaines on a 28-yard touchdown pass. Beleaguered most of the day by the hard-charging Washington defenders, Michigan quarterback Rick Leach finally hooked up on a 76-yard touchdown pass play to Curt Stephenson in the third quarter. Russell Davis powered two yards for the second Michigan score early in the last quarter and freshman tailback Stanley Edwards took a 32-yard pass from Leach for the Wolverines' third touchdown with just 3:44 left in the game. Michigan saw its chance for victory literally slip from its fingertips twice in the final 95 seconds. Surging from the i Washington 19, Leacb found Ralph Clayton in the end zone but the pass just grazed off the receiver's fingertips and dropped incomplete to the Rose Bowl turf.

Then, with just over a minute remaining and a Michigan first down at the Washington 8, Leach's pass for Stanley Edwards bounced off the receiver's hands, grazed his helmet and was picked out of midair by Huskies linebacker Michael Jackson giving Washington the ball at its three-yard line and a mammoth feeling of relief. Again Michigan got the ball after Washington was unable to make a first down. The Huskies punted from their own end zone but Washington's Nesby Glasgow intercepted a Leach pass on the very next play at the Huskies 7. Washington then ran out the clock. Washington carried the banner of the Pac-8 successfully once again and although just 7-4 in the regular season and ranked No.

13 in the nation, the Huskies made it nine victories in the last 11 Rose Bowl games for the Pac-8. Michigan, ranked No. 4 and with a 10-1 record, was a two-touchdown favorite on this sunny afternoon. But it trailed, 24-0, the most a Wolverine team had been behind in any game since 1968. i Washington made the most of its first visit to the bowl in Pasadena since 1964 while Michigan lost a fourth time in as many trips under coach Bo Schembechler.

THE HUSKIES OBVIOUSLY weren't dazzled by Michigan's somewhat surprising game-opening tactics a pitch to wing-back Ralph Clayton coming around, an almost-intercepted Leach pass and a deep pitch to tailback Stan Edwards. The Wolverines went right back to fullback Russell Davis up the middle and very shortly their drive ground to a halt, they Please turn to Page 5D, Column 1 8 I High Drama Ends 7 WV I Life Hnvn llntr.lTrin 1 Smelling the Roses: mm, fey First Quarter )i Monday's Bowl Results Rose Dow 1 Washington 27, Michigan 20. Arkansas, incomplete. How about Notre Dame vs. Alabama in the Super Michigan coach Bo Schembechler leads his team onto the field and gets booed. Gerald Ford leads the Rose queens out and gets cheered. Is the wrong man coaching the Wolverines? Anybody need two tickets for the game? No fun choking down two of them at $17.50 a copy.

Gotta hide them on the old expense account Michigan, of all things, is the home team and the Wolves come out in their blue jerseys. No white shoes, though. Bo wins again. Michigan wins the toss and the sun comes out for the first time in two weeks Wolverines have so many players on the sidelines almost a hundred they have two players wearing No. 30.

All the better to confuse Washington State and Curt Gowdy. The Wolverines start with a pitch-back reverse and Fritz Crisler almost falls out of the press box The second play is a pass so help me and it is almost intercepted. Well, that's the end of passing for the day. Bo sends a man in motion on his first six plays. Man in motion? That would be the name of a good book Russell Davis blasts 10 yards up the middle for a first down.

Welcome back, Bo. First break: John Anderson, back to punt, falls to his knees to field ground-ball snap from center. Minus 13 yards, Washington ball. He should have flipped it to short for a DP. team is wearing two roses on shoulder pads.

That's half as good as Four Roses. Uh, oh. Washington scores first on two-yard sprint by Warren Moon. How about Washington State against Dalles Cowboys in Super Leach, back to pass, is sacked for 1 1-yard loss. Maybe the Lions will draft him.

Mr rnoio Wolverines are caught looking forlornly at The Moon Huskies' first touchdown. Giving futile chase for University of Washington quarterback W'arren Michigan are Dom Tedesco (99), Curtis Greer (95), Moon (1) as the Huskie star scampers to the Ron Simpkins (40) and Jim Pickens (18). The California we know and love. Moon, shooting for the moon, hits a 62-yard pass to Spider Gaines Washington makes it 10-0 on 30-yard field goal by Steve Robbins. Wonder how Johnny Orr's team is doing? They announce no cheering in the press box. How about crying? Leach tries another pass. It's almost intercepted.

Third and Bo sends Russell Davis straight ahead for no gain. Come on, Bo. Shake it up. Spider Gaines runs into the end zone on an end-around for another Washington touchdown. 1 lold on.

Clipping. Bring it back Only a momentary reprieve. Moon crashes from the one and it's Washington 17, Michigan 0. Bring back Southern California. In fact, bring hack Ohio State is out again, if anyone cares Michigan tries a screen pass, so help us.

First in memory. Gains four. Who's getting desperate? Leach sacked for third time but this time they grab his face mask. First down, Michigan. Go, Blue! Leach, back to pass, retreats 20 yards and is headed for San Francisco when he unloads at the last moment.

Where's the offensive line? Now there's a fumble as Leach tries to hand off to Davis. Washington recovers. Worst Michigan has looked in years Back to punt, Washington's Aaron Wilson crosses up entire Michigan team by passing 48 yards to Kyle Stevens. Dwight Hicks saves something by intercepting Moon as Huskies seem ready to score again. If you have Huskies and 13 points, you are leading at the half, 30-0.

DALLAS (AP) Emotion-charged Notre Dame accepted No. 1-ranked Texas' suicidal tendencies Monday in the 42d annual Cotton Bowl and destroyed the bumbling Longhorns, 38-10, laying claim to the national collegiate football title. An elated Notre Dame coach Dan Devine, who announced that he would come back as the Irish's coach next season, said: "I feel we should be No. 1. Will we? I don't know.

I wouldn't care to guess." "I think we beat the No. 1 team when they were healthy and at home, and at this point I don't believe anybody could beat our team." He added, "We beat No. 1 what does that make us?" The fifth-ranked Irish turned five Texas turnovers into 31 points as Vagas Fergurson scored three touchdowns and reserve halfback Terry Eurick tallied twice in the astonishing rout. Tight end Ken MacAfee caught some heat from the Texas players after he told Texas running back Earl Campbell at the nationaPy televised Heisman Trophy presentation that Notre Dame should be No. 1 if it whipped the Longhorns.

Monday, MacAfee said, "Of course, we feel we're No. 1 we beat the No. 1 team decisively, by 28 points." In the somber Texas dressing room, coach Fred Akers was reassessing a statement he had made earlier in the week. He had said that Texas should be No. 1 even if it lost, because the Longhorns would have an 11-1 record, equal to any team in the country.

"No. 1 I don't know," said Akers, shaking his head. Asked point-blank if he thought Texas still had a chance to be No. 1 in the final Associated Press poll, Akers said, "Sure, 1 do, at Please turn to Page 5D, Column 1 clean boys' students' slacks, some by famous makers, in JSSfs J' A -A. How come it's so quiet in Bob Ufer's booth? The Huskies go 97 yards in 12 plays to bump the score to 24-0. If this keeps up, U-D is going to pass Michigan In the rankings U-M cheerleaders try to rouse U-M cheering section and are met with "Sounds of Silence." Now there's some noise: Michigan finally gets on the board when Leach finds Curt Stephenson wide open along sidelines and the play goes 76 yards for a touchdown. That's a Rose Bowl record. Somehow, it doesn't seem like Ann Arbor. A fight breaks out in the Michigan section. Go, Black and Blue! The Wolverines crank it up and get their second TD with Davis diving over from the two. Leach has hit six straight passes. A Rose Bowl and Olympic record.

With the clock under six minutes, some of the Michigan fans are leaving. Come back, folks Leach hits Stanley Edwards with a 32-yard pass for Michigan's third score with just under four minutes to go. The Wolverines muff the point when Stephenson caift get the ball down but now Washington's lead is only 27-20. High drama now: The Wolverines, refusing to quit, start driving again and get it close as the clock ticks down The fates strike a cruel blow as Leach's pass to Stanley Edwards is juggled on the five and picked off by linebacker Mike Jackson on the two. That's the way it ends: Washington 27, Michigan 20.
