The order also owns land behind the school ana monastery on which are located the Grosse Pointe Indoor Tennis Club and the Grosse Pointe Community Arena, an ice rink. The two sports facilities are owned by different private groups which are not associated with Austin, Bailey said. The Augustinian office in Chicago will decide what to do with the land and whether to keep the monastery open, Bailey said. fiSSl (MEEB2) BY WILLIAM GRANT Free Press Education Writer Austin Catholic Prep School, an east side Detroit fixture and one of the city's most widely respected schools, will close next year.

The decision to close the 25-year-old all-male high school ws made by the regional office of the Augustinian order in Chicago. The Very Rev Raymond R. Ryan, provincial of the order, said declining enrollment and a smaller number of religious teachers made the closing necessary. The order operates a number of schools in the East and West, but only four, including Austin, are located in the Midwest. Father Ryan said in a letter mailed last week to parents of students now attending Austin that the number of members of the order in the Midwest involved in high school teaching has dropped from 90 in 1972 to 60 today.

That Indicated that one of the four Midwest schools should close, Father Ryan said, and Austin was chosen because it is in an area of declining enrollment which is also served by a number of other Catholic schools. The order's three other Midwest schools one in Tulsa and two in Chicago are needed more, a letter to students said, because they are in areas where few other Catholic schools are available. Austin enrolls 427 students in ninth through 12th grades this year in a building on East Warren near Mack. The school, which charges about $900 in tuition and fees this year, draws students from the east side of Detroit, Harper Woods and the Grosse Pointes. The letter read to Austin students Friday said the school would need to double the number of students in coming years to survive.

"This is virtually impossible," the students were told, "because there just are not that many young men available who want to enroll at Austin and who can pay the tuition." THE SCHOOL was started to provide a traditional, strongly academic, college-preparatory program for high school boys. Thomas Bailey, the acting principal, said Monday that counselors will help students find other schools. The provincial's office in Chicago has promised to seek jobs for the school's lay faculty members in other Catholic schools. The school's principal, the Rev. Lawrence Dore, has been on sick leave since early September and it is not known if he will be able to return before the school closes.
