Szeryng, Polish-born but now a Mexican citizen, plays these works with such polish and refinement that they acquire a gem-like finish. It is one of the finest recordings of these difficult works to be found.

WILIIELM STENHAM SERENADE FOR ORCHESTRA IN MAJOR, Or. Stockholm Philharmonic Or-, chestra, Rafael Kiibelik conducting. (Heliodor) The orchestral innovators are always the composers most remembered while those who merely used the forms already established have to sit back and wait for history to rediscover them, no matter how great-their music originally was. So it is with this Swedish composer, Stcnhammer, who lived from 1871 to 1927, a period in' which music underwent the most profound changes, changes indepd which are still going on. Thus, this charming, gentle, generally serene Serenade seems almost dated, reminiscent of the periods bp-fore it rather than of its own time or as a forerunner of things to come.

Nevertheless, such is its attractiveness and neatness that Rafael Kubelik is to be thanked for rescuing it from oblivion. PRESENTS SWITCHED ON BACH, Walter CerlosBeniamin Folkman (Columbia) 1-SOUNOTRACK: 3001 1 A SPACE ODYSSEY, (MGM) There's a poignant, plaintive quaver in Glenn Yar-brough's tenor which- for better or worse makes most of the things he sings sound very much alike. Joan Raez and Judy Collins have much of that same quality. While some of this album has that "seems like I've heard that before" sound, there are instances of Yarbrough really coming on new and strong in such as "Baby, You Come Rollin' Across My Mind" and "Things You Do." It is all good, and particularly so because all proceeds go to the Schole. Foundation, which aids orphaned children in California.

KING, DOES THE KING'S THINGS Albert King Stax: Joined by the Stax house band in Memphis (Al Jackson, Duck Dunn and Steve Cropper), Albert King pays tribute to Elvis Presley by doing some of his things like "Heartbreak Hotel," "Don't Be Cruel," and "Blue Suede Shoes" in 1969 electric-blues style. LOVE OF LIFE (i.ne Bua Heritage: Gene Rua, who's Bill Prentiss on the CBS-TV soap opera, "Love of Life," has a fine, sensitive baritone in the relaxed, pleasant style of Don Ho. He can handle almost any material from "Ixive Me Tender," "If I Were a Carpenter," to Earl Wilson beautiful Small We Are, How Little We Know." both country hip, and the beat is 1969 all the way. "Any Day Now," "Gentle On My Mind," "In The Ghetto" will turn on all audiences. HOT BUTTERED SOUL Isaac Hayes Enterprise; Very few albums have one number that makes it well worth twice the price you pay.

Rut Isaac Hayes, normally a record producer for Stax, has created just that in a classic 18:40 version of "By the Time I Get To Phoenix." Hayes tells' us the untold story rf what happened to set up that guy's leaving home for Phoenix. None of the other versions have attempted this and I'm sure Hayes' Monolog has Glen Campbell's and Jim Webb's As a singer and organist, Hayes is also superbly downhome. Remixing on this album was done by Detroit's Russ Terrana at the excellent Tera-Shirma Studios. THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR. MIND Ed Ames RCA Victor: Give Ed Ames a rugged, back-to-the-soil-and -baekroads song and he'll sing it so well it'll scare you.

This has to be the album in which he really finds his thing and gets it on "Sittin' on the Dock of the Ray," "Proud Mary," and "Son of a Travelin' Man" tell it all. SOMEHOW, SOMEWAY OlPnn Ya rhrongh Wnrnpr FM HIGHLIGHTS ll milt Flcdermaus'; 'My Fair 1 THE AGE OF AQUARIUS The 5th Dimension Soul City: This may very well be the pop album of the year of aquarius. Roy Townson, LaMonte Mc-Lemore, Billy Davis Florence LaRue and Marilyn McCoo are the most exciting singers to come-along in years. Ever since their red balloon went up, up and away last year, they have solidified their perch atop the pop music scene, Bill Holman's big brass and string sections and Bones Howe's provocative production enhance all the numbers. The album includes their hits of "Aquarius Let the Sunshine In" and "Working on a Groovy Thing," plus the finest version of "Sunshine of Your Love" to date, including the Creai's original.

WE'LL GKT OVER Staple Sinner -Stax: For years gospel was their but the Staples Singers have now branched into the contemporary field with excellent, meaningful music like "Give a Dam," "Everyday People," "Games People Play" and "Tend To Your Business." The Staples are still preaching and the beat's the same, the direction is the only thing changed. FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS Elvis Presley RCA Victor: After 3 million-seller albums, 85 million single, and 30 movie sales it's inconceivable that Elvis Presley could be discovered brand new. But that's what's with the King of Rock and Roll with his return to the rhythms and blues drive of Memphis, his home town. His first act was to cash the top heart honors, but West showed out on the second round.
