D. Snto) 5 31 2" 1.70 Debonalre Ladv BY AL OFl'MAN There will be a "new look" to horse racing; when the Detroit Race Course opens its gates this summer for a 90-day thoroughbred meet, July 8. The new management of the "Michigan Mile" track unveiled Tuesday the most impressive roster of stakes races ever presented at a Detroit track. TOPPING THE list as usual is the Michigan but the purse for the 1969 running has been cut from $100,000 to $75,000. This is the sum which the track adds to the nominating, entry and starting fees put up by the owners of the horses.

The DRC, however, will guarantee a gross purse of $100,000 for the 21st running of its major race. Director of racing Norris Gwin announced that the DKC would offer a record In purses. Of this sum $175,000 will be offered In 21 stakes events. The Michigan "Mile" was reduced in value to put more impact in the rest of the stakes program. Besides the "Mile" there will be the Mi-, lette for fillies and mares, the Finale Handicap for three-year-olds and up and the Detroit- The Michigan Futurity will offer Michigan-bred two-year-olds their richest opportunity with $20,000 in added money.

In another change the Michigan "Mile" will be contested two weeks later than it has been scheduled in recent years Oct. 4. The distance, of course, remains at 1 miles in an effort to attract the cream of the older distance runners. TO TRESENT his rich pro-gram to Eastern horsemen, Gwin will head for New York this week. His first stop will be Belmont Park, where he will contact owners and trainers on the eve of the $125,000 Belmont Stakes.

er Handicap for three-year-olds. THE FRONTIER handicap, which goes back all the way to the turn of the century, wiil resume an important place on the roster of stakes races. It has been endowed with $25,000 after being neglected in recent years. In the $25,000 class, too, are the Labor Day Handicap for three-year-olds, the Mile Trial and the Graduation for two-year-olds. Three-year-old fillies will get their chance in the Damsels Stakes, while the two-year-old misses have the Rose Leaves Handicap for the same money.
