MICHIGAN FELL behind twice in the first last season's disastrous 50-14 loss at Ohio State. The Big Ten athletic directors made it official a few hours after Saturday's result by naming the Wolverines to represent the conference in Pasadena on Jan. 1. The Wolverines will meet Southern California in the grand-daddy of bowls. USC rallied to beat UCLA, 14-12, Saturday and qualified for an unprecedented fourth straight visit to the Rose Bowl.

The Buckeyes came to Michigan with a 22-game winning streak, 17 straight Big Ten wins and the title of "best college team ever." But the Wolverines led by tough little half as the Bucks scored on a one-yard run by fullback Jim Otis, and a 22-yard pass from Kern to Jan White. But the Wolverines came back with a pair of touchdowns by their own hard-hitting fullback Garvie Craw on runs of three and one yards, a two-yard burst by Moorhead and a 25-yard field goal by Tim Killian. What the Wolverines did was to beat the Buckeyes at Woody Hayes own game. They simply overpowered him and they simply out-de-fensed him. That, probably, is not too surprising. Michigan coach Bo Schembechler learned a lot of his football under Hayes a few years ago and he obviously learned it very well.
