Saturday, Nov. 9, '68 3 It DETROIT FREE PRESS '3 -Wheeled Bullet9 Is Racing Winter, Too vn -nn i'tTi rt trffiif? Atifr Racing i With Bob Laishw' Sttzt EASTERN DIVISION Short hours and big pay. If you have the guts for it, you can realize that economic dream on the Salt Flats of Bonneville, Utah. Most of the drivers who race the over-powered projectiles through the measured mile of the Flats in search of world speed records have a short timetable: Dawn to 7 a.m. And, during these fall days, that figures out to about an hour or two.

MICKEY THOMPSON, for example, who unsuccessfully battled the elements for two weeks recently, figures he is shot down for the day if he hasn't completed his runs by 7 a.m. But to qualify for the short hours and big pay you must have a couple of sound qualifications ability to drive at extremely high speeds and be pursuasive enough to convince an auto manufacturer that you can break the existing speed records. The final three miles of the 10-mile course over the Flats is still under water from rain that washed out Thompson's record attempts. A SPOKESMAN for American Motors, Breedlove's chief sponsor, said that it would probably be Sunday or Monday before the three-wheeled, bullet-shaped creation could take to the salt. "And, that is only if the rain doesn't continue and the salt dries out," he said.

Breedlove expects to crack the 409-mile-an-hour record for wheel driven vehicles with his single engine (AMC) machine. But he faces some hairy problems. The salt crust, softened by the rain, breaks easily under sudden acceleration. When the wheels hit the mud beneath the salt surface, the car can do come crazy maneuvers. Wind is another factor.

In fact, Breedlove was forced off the course Thursday when he was running an American Motors' AMX at speeds of 186 miles an hour. He plans on trying for more than 200 in this sports model of AMC, but it will have to be with less than the 20-mile-an-hour winds that sweep the lake bed. MOST OBSERVERS feel that if only one auto com- pany, or one driver was making an assault on the speed records, the attempts would have been given up until next spring. But there is great competition between Breedlove and Thompson and their sponsors. Right now, Thompson's car is still in nearby Wen-, dover, Utah, ready to move in if Breedlove should-crack the record before his Nov.

17 expiration of his; reservation of the Flats. But the betting is that Old Man Winter is going to-be the only winner this year on the Salt Flats. Thompson had the hacking of Ford, Goodyear, Au-tolite, etc. Craig Breedlove, who holds the world land speed record (in a jet car) of 600 plus miles an hour, is the latest to challenge the Flats. Like, Thompson, Breedlove has been plagued by the weatherman.

Although he ran into mechanical difficulty, which delayed his American Spirit's arrival until Friday night, Breedlove couldn't have run. Pot.
