Illinois 3. 0 BY CURT SYLVESTER Fro Press Sports Writer CHAMPAIGN, 111. It was only four small steps for man Garvie Craw, that is but it was a giant step for the Michigan Wolverines. Craw scored our touchdowns three on one-step jolts into the end zone and a fourth by stepping across the goal line to grab a five-yard pass Saturday as the Wolverines clobbered Illinois, 57-0, and kept their Rose Bowl hopes flying. The victory over a winless Illinois team does not signify the departure of a Michigan Rose Bowl express, Coach Bo Schembechler insists.

But it does keep the Wolverines alive for their shot at the moon the moon over Pasadena as they go into the final two games of the year against Iowa and Ohio State. Michigan is now 4-1 in the Big Ten and 6-2 overall while Illinois has lost eight straight games, five against conference opposition. 0 8 0 If Michigan and Purdue still are tied when the regular season finishes, the nod most likely will go to Michigan, which downed the Boilermakers, 31-20, in a head-on collision earlier in the season. The only way Indiana would go now is if the Hoosiers beat both Northwestern and Purdue, while Michigan and Purdue each lost its last two games. NEXT SATURDAY'S GAMES Michigan at Iowa.

Purdue had two touchdowns in the first 5 'i minutes. Craw took care of the next four touchdowns and then re. serve quarterback Jim Betts came in to finish the Michigan attack by running six yards for one score and pass-ing 13-yards to John Gaoler for another. Bruce Elliott, the son of former Illinois coach Pete Elliott, intercepted an Illinois pass in the closing seconds of the game and ran it 40 yards for the final touchdown against the Illini.

Kicking specialist Tim Kil-lian gave Michigan its first three points with a 28-yard field goal, just a few minutes before Taylor broke loose on his 84-yard TD run.
