O-C Thursday, March 26, '64 DETROIT FREE PRESS Sid Caesar Hones to Remain on TV JL Yoiir Best BetS TOP CHOICE: Detroit Red Wings meet the Chicago Black Hawks in the first of the Stanley Cup hockey semifinal playoff games at 9 p.m., on Q. BY BETTELOU PETERSON Free Press TV Writer Would you expect to talk to Sid Caesar about the military tactics of Alexander of Macedonia, the father of modern warfare? Not if you know Sid only from his TV comedy shows or from his wonderful, wild AT 11 O'CLOCK AT NIGHT, ALL 3 8:30 p.m. Dr. Kildare: Bungling medical student subs for fellow student and a tragedy results. Robert Walker, Michael Callen star.

9 p.m. Perry Mason: Girl charged with murdering step-sister for fortune. Jerry Van Dyke, in first dramatic role, Harry Townes star. 9:30 p.m. Jimmy Dean: New time, Singers Jack Jones, Hank Snow, guests.

CHANNELS "The whole thing Intrigued me. The more I read, the more I wanted to read in the hope I'd find out what it is about war that makes men want to spend their time slaughtering each other." Sid was interested in Alexander, the great conqueror, one of the first generals to treat battles as a science. But the Civil War still is Sid's pet subject. And when you've heard the battle of Fredericksburg recounted complete with Southern accents for the Confederate generals, it's easy to pick up his enthusiasm. DETROIT TV CARRY NEWS PROVIDES NETWORK COVERAGE.

i ONLY ONE WXYZ-TV BE SCENE Sid Caesar everything by what a few people doing the ratings say, there isn't much chance for our kind of comedy." AX ABC SHOW like Sid has an extra disadvantage. The network has fewer sta- tions than either CBS or NBC. ABC shows have to take spots at odd hours. "Who," said Sid, "wants to watch my kind of comedy at 5:30 in the afternoon?" "But our big trouble was that we had no time to move," he went on. "You know how long a half -hour on TV is 23 minutes.

You just get rolling and, boom, you're off. We're supposed to do a whole show in the time we had for a single sketch in the old days." During the past season, too, he had the double chore of the stage play and the TV show. Sunday, his only day free of the play, he was busy taping the TV show. The time left for his family he and Mrs. Caesar have three children was shorter than Sid likes.

"But touring is worse," he said. "I haven't seen them for eight weeks. But school's out and they'll be in Detroit Friday for a stay." BUT WHERTS does Alexander fit into the picture? Caesar's been studying military tactics ever since he picked up a book on the Civil War written by Bruce Cat-ton. Next thing, he knew he was devouring every book he could get on tha subject and then branching out into theories of warfare. "I got a book from Point on tactics," he West said.

In a remarkable transpacific TV transmission by Relay II communications satellite, Japan and the United States were linked for 10 minues, 7:32 to 7:42 a.m. Except for one short flaw, the picture was as perfect as anything from a local TV station. The Japanese used the brief program for a formal apol-ogy by Prime Minister Hay-ato Ikeda for the attack by a deranged youth on American Ambassador Edwin Rels-chauer.

Instead of the usual annoying "voice over" translation that drowns out the speaker the Japanese, used a written translation of Ikeda's talk that unrolled on the bottom of the screen. But it was the look at the Tokyo street scenes, the judo practice and the Olympic Stadium that were the best parts of the program. It was a technically perfect performance and bodes well for any possible telecasting of the Tokyo Olympics in October. Or, as the Japanese a commentator said, sounding like the many take-offs on his countrymen, the "Orympics." foods '-'Hi ftii ii mi mm i 1 1 ii II I I'll I ONLY 89.95 i -i i I General Electric Featherweight Portable TV Speciacular ONLY 12 LBS. Guarantee Leo Le Von's 4 multiple role performance in "Little now at the Fisher Theater. In mid-afternoon at his Park Shelton Hotel suite, Sid was in plaid robe and slippers getting started for the day. He sleeps late. Those seven roles in "Little Me" make rest a necessity. Sid extends a hand in greeting and says a quiet "Hello." "He's a shy guy," his good friend and former co-worker Carl Reiner had said.

"He's not the kind to get up and perform at parties all the time. When he does, though, it's wonderful." SID WAS grim when he talked about TV. His ABC show has been cancelled. He hasn't been allocated a spot for next year, but Sid doesn't rule out the chance of a show. He's not making any real decision until August after he finishes his tour with "Little Me." With the lapse of an occasional season, Sid has been around almost as long as TV.

It was 1949 when he did "Your Show of Shows" with producer Max Leibman. Caesar snorted over the idea of some that his latest collaboration with writer Goodman Ace didn't work because the pair don't operate on the same comedy frequency. "That's silly," said Sid. "If I wanted him to write differently, he would have done it.
