May 25, '77 DETROIT FREE PRESS Commentator Lou Gordon Dies of quently would start out as a promoter of a candidate, helping them get elected, then turn on them after they got in office. A notable example of this was Jerome P. Cavanagh, whom Gordon picked up and supported for mayor of Detroit Cavanagh a young Detroit lawyer, politically unknown in the early 1960s. After Cavanagh took office, Gordon criticized him harshly and repeatedly and the two men became bitter enemies. GORDON WAS BORN in Detroit on May 17, 1917, and attended Detroit public schools.

After graduation from Central High School, he attended the University of Michigan for one term, in 1933-34. He quit college to work as an insurance agent for the United Life and Accident Insurance Co. During World War II, he enlisted in the Air Cadets program and served two years in the Army Air Corps. He received a medical discharge after being injured the crack-up of a trainer plane." the war, he worked in Washington, D.C., for the Booth newspaper chain. GORDON'S a salesman, died in 1950, and Lou returned to Detroit to look after business matters and take care of his mother.

He' became a manufacturer's representative for White Stag, a sportswear manufacturer. He once told a reporter that he built up the local business from $150,000 a year to $1.5 million "But my heart was never in the selling business." he said. longed for the old days of politics." He got back into politics in 1957, joining WXYZ radio as a commentator. He eventually had a five-nights-a-week program. He also began appearing on television on WXYZ.

He joined WKBD-TV in 1965. His program was syndicated in 1971. At the time of his death, the program was carried for three hours on Saturday and Sunday nights in DeNO troit and for 90 minutes each in Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Miami, San Francisco and Los Angeles, a station spokesman said. GORDON WAS married twice. His marriage to a Washington woman ended in divorce, and Gordon got custody of the couple's three children.

About 15 years ago, he married Jackie Cross, a fashion model, and adopted her child by a previous marriage. They had one child. His wife, Jackie, fed him questions on his program, and he often took them as a launching pad for mini-editorials on a variety of his pet subjects, ranging from his opposition to the Vietnam war or utility rate hikes to his feuds with figures such as Oakland County Prosecutor Patterson HYPNOSIS SMOKING LOSE WEIGHT STOP DRINKING NERVOUSNESS FEARS PHOBIAS INSOMNIA IMPROVE STUDIES SALESMANSHIP ESTABLISHED 1936 DETROIT HYPNOSIS CLINICS 19701 W. 7 Mile 537-9100 a year and became independ- 189 E. No autopsy will be conducted, she said. "His physical condition had been excellent," she said." was shocked, to say the least." The political influence of Gordon's program was far greater than the size of its audience would indicate.

The program got about 10 percent of the available audience of older viewers interested in politics, and Michigan politicians watched it closely. In Michigan, where statewide political races often are close, many politicians thought she or at least fearedthat Gordon's program could make the difference. Mony politicians didn't like Gordon, but they courted him. GORDON COULD GET a one-on-one interview with any politician in the state, and presidential candidates visiting Michigan often appeared on his show. President Carter gave his only Detroit interview to Gordon during the general election campaign last fall, although the program was held cft the air Kaiser Broadcasting officials because of federal equal-time provisions that would have required the network to give equal time to then President Gerald R.

Ford, independent candidate Eugene McCarthy and perhaps others. Romney made his brainwashing statement in 1967 after his visit to Vietnam. In his book. "The Making of the President 1968," author Theodore White used the incident as an illustration of "the reality of politics and its distorted reflection in the media." Romney's statement was: "Well, you know, when came back from Vietnam, I just had the greatest brainwashing that anybody can get when you go over to Vietnam not only by the generals but also by the diplomatic corps over there, and they do a very thorough job." Romney said he no longer believed it was necessary for the United States to be involved in South Vietnam. In his book, White said Gordon read the transcript of the Romney interview and "decided then that 'brainwashing' was more important than anything else in his show for attention-catching purposes.

He telephoned the New York Times man in Detroit (Jerry Flint) to that effect, giving him a full transcript." The Times put the brainwashing angle in the headline and the television networks picked it up from the Times and ran news clips of Gordon's show. Romney, White wrote, "perhaps was the first to know that his hopes (for president) were over." IN MICHIGAN politics, Gordon both promoted and feuded with some of the more promi- and ex-Mayor Cavanagh. His earnings were believed to be in six figures.
