v' r1 www r'T' DETROIT FREE PRESS Friday, May 20. 77 3-D U-M Picked for Big 10 Title-Surprise! Not Football, Tennis BY CURT SYLVESTER Fret Prtis Sports Writer ANN ARBOR He doesn't have 100,000 people watching his every move and the television cameras aren't sending him coast-to-coast. But the pressure is there in University of Michigan tennis, just as it is in football and basketball. Just ask Jeff Etterbeek. Etterbeek is tennis coach Brian Eisner's answer There are a couple of good reasons why McMaster is the choice of millions of people who really like Canadian Whisky.

The first is the quality of the smooth. The second is a surpnsingly moderate pnee. Next time you bend an elbow McSmoothit. 7 4" Penis no smsm to Bo Schembechler's Rob Lytle or Johnny Orr's Rickey Green. Etterbeek is the No.

1 singles player on the U-M tennis team that is favored to win the Big Ten title. A sophomore from Holland, who arrived at Michigan by way of Cran-brook School in Bloomfield Hills, Etterbeek has won 17 matches while losing only two during the regular season and is the No. 1 seeded player in the Big Ten tennis meet that began here Competing against the strong Texas schools, Etterbeek won four of five singles matches, losing only to Randy Crawford of Texas Christian, the No. seeded singles player in the NCAA. "He's a tremendous competitor," said Eisner.

"If there's a way to win, he'll find it. He very rarely takes a bad loss. "He has a good all-court game. He has a sound back court game, he can defend well, he hits passing shots well, returns serves well and he has a two-hand backhand that is lethal." Etterbeek grins at his coach's description of his Jimmy Connors-Bjorn Borg style two-hand backhand, although he admits "my best 'weapon' is my backhand." "I've always had It, since I was eight years old," he said. "The coach I had when I was eight got me started with it.

I was pretty weak. Physically, I wasn't strong enough to hit a one-hand backhand." Etterbeek has put the two-hander, plus the rest of his shots, to good use, losing only once in Big Ten competition this season to Chuck Maurice of Illinois. Although that was his only loss, it turned out to be a costly one. Etterbeek selected his season goals carefully nothing outrageous. Just a Big Ten singles championship, a doubles championship, a team title and a chance to compete in the NCAA tournament.

"I don't think that's unreasonable," he offered. And then, with everything going well, he added one more goal "to be an Ail-American this season." "But I haven't lived up to that goal." he said. "The top 16 players make it but I'm seeded No. 19. 1 lost to Chuck Maurice that might have been the killer.

I was very disappointed." That being the case, Etterbeek (the Big Ten No. 2 singles champion last year) should be ready to continue his career in the finest tradition of Michigan tennis, which exceeds even the tradition of Michigan football in dominating the Big Ten. The Wolverines have won the last nine Big Ten titles in a row, are expected to make it No. 10 and then be on their way to the NCAA tournament in Athens, by the time the activities wrap up Saturday afternoon. All of that is expected, despite the fact that Eisner's seven-man tournament team is dominated by underclassmen four freshmen, one sophomore (Etterbeek) and two juniors.

Four freshman are playing singles Jud Shau-fler at No. 2 singles, Mark Freedman at No. 4, Jack Neinken at No. 5 and Scott Seeman at No. 6.

Junior Brad Holland is playing No. 3 singles and junior Ollie Owens teams with Freedman on the No. 3 doubles team. Etterbeek and Shaufler play No. 1 doubles, and Holland and Neinken play No.

2 doubles. And, although the Wolverines had their undefeated season spoiled by losses to Texas Christian, Texas and Pan American on a five-stop trip through Texas last week, Eisner came back with a positive attitude about the Big Ten meet and the NCAA tournament. "WITH A YOUNG team like this, what you're really looking for is improvement," said Eisner. "That was one reason we took the trip to Texas. We had to be tested.

"We were 14-0 up here, but if you're not tested, you never know how good you are. Now we think we know where we are nationally. We're right up there in the top 20. The Texas trip really helped our people improve. That demonstrated to us that Jeff Etterbeek is as good as anybody in the United States." iiiifl SBHHK Jeff Etterbeek "The pressure definitely built, especially in the Big Ten, as I continued to win," said Etterbeek.

"I became more tentative in my strokes and it definitely wasn't as enjoyable. "Not that I dislike the pressure," he added quickly. "I like it and 1 think I've played some of my best tennis under pressure. I know last year in the Big Ten (meet), I played well. "Now that we're getting into the tournaments, I've started to loosen up started to hit my strokes." U-M Netters Share McMASTER'S BLENDED CANADIAN WHISKY.
