10 Friday, July. 4. DETROIT FREE TRESS Pray for Peace rm he Beatles Still BY MIKE GORMLEY July 4 Weekend Promises to Be Wild and Weird the market soon with some other interesting people on it. A tune called "That's The Way God Planned It" is played by Billy Preston, Eric Clapton, Harrison, Keith Richard, Ginger Baker, Doris Troy and Madelline Bell. The record was produced by George Harrison.

Evidently the title won't give anybody trouble, stations in Detroit already want to play it. But Lennon can't say Christ. Everybody else can, but not little John. Capitol record's Tom Gilardi says the tune is very heavy and very deep. OPEX CITY is having a raising party at Alvin's Delicatessen at Cass and Palmer on the Wayne State Campus Friday, July 11.

It starts at 8:00 p.m. and there will be refreshments (what did you expect in a delicatessen?) and music (in a The thing will cost $1.00. If you happened to have seen Tuesday's column you would have read about Tom Jones of WTRX in Flint having a date contest with Tom Jones of WTRX to go see the Tom Jones Show of other fame. Well sir, he had a lawn party outside his radio station for people to enter the contest. He in turn received various requests.

Someone gave him a Playboy magazine to read in ca.se he gets tired of watching girls (45 year old girls) scream at Tom Jones scissors to geit a lock of the star's hair a handkerchief to wipe the singer's brow with (to be returned unlaundered) a tube of lipstick to put a dot on Tom Jones' cheek since Jones can't come out to the audience to be kissed and a tape measure to see how tall Jones is, of course. WTRX had roughly 1,000 a.t the party. MSI cJ' ILrJ) ftM I'V' Ml V'L 0 1 A' 5rV i' If if Fret Press Staff Writer Credence Clearwater will be in town July 26. With the San Francisco group will be the Box-Tops and Jethro lull. Because of my carousing around town with "Laugh In" future star Teresa Graves I missed WABX's night at the movies.

The film was by Lindsay Anderson and people say it was, and probably still Is, a great flick. WABX employed the services of New York's musical street walkers David Peel and the Lower East Side. However the last time the group was seen, they were boarding their plane in New York. Nobody even saw them get off in Detroit and nobody has heard from them since. At any rate the night was a large success with an over flow crowd people sitting in aisles and most of them came away digging the film.

State Senator Roger Craig talked to the group after the film and reportedly went over well, for a Senator. While we're at ABX listen for Dan Carlisle's "History of Michigan Rock 'n Roll" around August 1. Also, I will be going with Dan to Jackson Trison on July 13 to see 3rd Power, Savage Grace and Wilson Mower Pursuit entertain WAXB listeners at the prison A new Beatle single will be out next week, The tune is called "Prayer For Peace" and was recorded in room 1732 of the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, Que. On the record is John Lennon, Yoko Ono and Tom Smothers as well as othr peace people. Another record will be on Revival, seen above, will take over Olympia July 26 along with The Box Tops and Jethro Tull.

The show will be at Olympia and along with Sly will be Miles Davis and Nina Simone, and others. Expect some changes at the East -Town soon Good news to blues fans. There will be an Ann Arbor Blues Festival August 1, 2, 3.

Names mentioned in connection with the blues blast are Howlin' Wolf, B. B. King, Junior Wells, Muddy Waters, Otis Bush and a much longer list. Blind Faith will be at Olympia August 1 instead of the 2nd as previously announced. AND JOIN I AI.ZO AND IDIXE MFR-Cl'RY.

This album is good. Alzo and ITdine write their own material, which Isn't yet a John Stewart Is Happy Without Kingston Trio struments thrown in- to produce a true sound of music. DAMI1IKNOW The Mar-Keys Stax There is a Stax sound. It could be described as harsh and aggressive and brass. The Mar-Keys along with the MG's and Bar-Kays are the reason behind the whole thing.

"Damiflknow" demonstrates that sound. It's difficult to recognize Mack Rice's "Mustang Sally." The tune sounds much like the way Bill Blck would have done it. Unless you're a deep fan of the Memphis music it would be very difficult to get all the way through this album. With the exception of John Sebastian's "Day Dream" the album is all Memphis, and as a result can get very boring. "Day Dream" introduces the piano as lead instrument and the tune is reminiscent of "Alley Cat," the big piano hit.

This album isn't released as yet, but when it is pick it up.

It's all instrumental and not original compositions but what Mardin does to tunes like "Glass i "Strange Brew," and "Ain't No Way" should bring happy tears to the eyes of the composers. There is one Arif Mardin composition on the album, a slow but heavy thing called "Midnight Walk." A lot of brass, then a haunting harmonica with tight guitars may make "Walk" a step forward into up-dated big band. Unlike old big bands trying to cash in on the rock market and ending up like fish out of water, Arif Mardin has taken rock and It and and inter-grated them with brass and strings with several other in A busy July 4 weekend Is upon Detroit and its inhabitants. Highlights of the weekend take us from the biggest name in the business today to local groups. The biggest name is Tom Jones who will be displaying his talents Friday, July 4 at Olympia.

Tom is expected to fill the 16,000 seat auditorium, probably includes 15,000 females. Also on Friday, the Second Detroit Rock 'n Roll Revival will take place at the Mt. Clemens Raceway. The head-liners are Savoy Brown and The Pentangle from England as well as the MC-5, The Frost, 3rd Power, Brownsville Station. But, he) doesn't 'like it. It was the biggest mistake of my lite," he said. Now, when you think of it, a person who joins a group that has made a few million dollars, sold many millions of records, started an entire music trend and become a household name around the world well, that person has stepped into something good. But that's not necessarily so with a creative person. John Stewart is a creative person and as a result doesn't consider the Kingston Trio experience a good one.

"You see, It was Nick, Bob and Dave's group. They started the whole thing and it was their creation. Coming In after they had reached that success made me nothing more than a sideman." (To the lay person, a sideman Is a musician who accompanies the "star" on stgae). John continued to explain his difficulties with the trio. "I couldn't do what I wanted to do.

All their music pretty well had to pertain to what they were known for." "There is another aspect of working with the trio I didn't like. As in all big groups there is a great deal of hassle going on around the group. You know, managers, public relations people, promoters, record company people and the whole thing. With that going on a songwriter and performer can get a very big head when it all happens so tvt rtl pLQ I Starting this Sunday New excitement --n. in the color comics great asset.

Their ability can be seen and the second album could be very interesting. The duo's voices are good, not powerful but soft and suited to their music. A folk influence can be heard. THE ELECTRIC JI NK YARD RCA. It's a good name for the album, and the group. Supposedly 13 different instruments and nine months were put into experimenting with different recording techniques to come up with the best possible sound. What a waste of time and energy. It's already being called one of the best albums of the year. One record producer is getting a group together to play 'California Bloodlines' type There is a reason for this. "I record the songs I like the best. I don't go into the studio to get just anything down on wax. 'California Bloodlines' is a collection of songs I really enjoy and consider worthy of recording." John feels his recording facilities have a great deal to do with the actual feeling on the record.

"We recorded In Nashville, you know. The whole thing on the album Is a result of the musicians in that city. Nashville musicians are so eager to do what you want to do. Of course the feeling of the city goes into the studio. I've always felt hate and tightness in Detroit and Chicago and it can be heard in the records out of those cities.

The West Coast and New York are very aggressive. Listen to Blood, Sweat and Tears, out of New York. Even Simon and Garfunkel are aggressive. Nashville is calm and cool. "You go into record there and within a half an hour of meeting these strangers you are friends and the recording is going well, They listen to your music and work with' you." John now lives in Marshall, several miles outside San Francisco.

"It's a town of about 50 with a general store and a gas station. Things are spread out so much there and it's one of the few places left In America where there is really a lot of room." As a result of that room Marshall hasn't become a Laurel Canyon or New Mexico. "A few freak-types live out there but the area isn't concentrated enough to make it one big community. Your neighbor can be a few miles away." Nashville is a nice place to record. Marshall is a nice place to live and John writes nice tunes.

Whether he likes it or not, John Stewart will be remembered for a while as an ex-member of the Kingston Trio. But all the other nice things will soon take over. Lesley Gibb Joins Brothers of the Bee Gees Twenty-one year old Lesley Gibb recently made her show business comeback when she joined the Bee Gees. Lesley joined her brothers Barry and Maurice along with drummer Colin Petersen for an appearance on London's Talk of The Town TV show. The Bee Gees' hour long BBC color special brought Lesley out of a four year self-imposed retirement, where she had devoted herself entirely to her husband Keith Evans, and their four children.

Lesley, who, like her brothers, originally hails from Manchester, England, has spent the several years in Sydney, Australia with her husband who is an advertising executive. They returned to England only eighteen months ago. While in Sidney, Lesley worked first as a dancer, and then later as a singer. Despite the fact that she often worked in clubs where the Bee Gees performed, she never sang publically with them until their recent television spectacular. this Sunday, we're making Press color comics section entertaining than ever for member of your family.
