O'Connor was at the practice session where lKmghty was hit by linebacker Ed Moore and middle guard Al Francis in a passing drill Wednesday afternoon. "I WAS U1GIIT there to examine the knee," Dr. O'Connor explained. "There was little doubt in my mind that it was a major tear of his ligament. It was completely torn.

Upon examination his knee was unstable. "It has been our experience that the sooner the surgery can be performed, the more effective it is." lor that reason it was decided to operate at Michigan Wolverines on Christinas eve, but strictly had a scii.se of humor. Junior Lance Sclieffler of Trenton, who carried the ball 10 times for 60 yards during the regular season, has moved up to the No. 2 tailback position since Doughty's injury.

"Bill Munson is obviously not a championship quarterback. If the Lions can get as much as they claim they can for him, they would be foolish not to trade him. My trade would be with the Boston Patriots for defensive tackle Houston Antwine and fullback Jim Nance, plus a high draft choice.

If necessary, throw in Bill Triplets This is a Super Bowl trade and could very well develop since Boston is desperate for a quarterback." MIKE DAKESIAN, 13657 Thornton, Detroit Ridiculous. The Lions have struggled for a dozen years to come up with competent quarterbacking. Now that they have it, some would discard it. That's no way to the Super Bowl. (Dandies, eh? Because of its television exposure during the annual Bing Crosby Clambake, ecenic Pebble Beach is a target of every golfer who goes to northern California. Since It's been selected for the 1972 U.S.

Open, its popularity Shas Increased even more. So, to try and hold down outside play at Pebble, Del Monte Properties, has raised green fees to $'0 a round. It was $15. Michigan's top fee is $10 at the Robert Trent Jones designed Boyne Highlands course. Jones is doing increasing business for ski areas which are building golf courses to lure summer customers.

Jones is designing one rum for Ijovell, Maine, but if New England gets another winter like last one, it'll be some time before they start work on a golf course. The New England ski country had too much snow last winter over 2(M) Inches with lifts being buried In a number of places. And, notice the slick transition to skiing, It's funny how American skiers regard the Alps as The Real Thing and make pilgrim-mages to Europe as if they were going to Mecca. Who Iloally ares? TRANS WORLD AIRLINES' magazine points out that (1) the Rockies are older than the Alps and (2) the Rockies are higher. The Rockies are 70 million years old and the Alps are Juveniles 15 million years old.

The reason the Rockies' peaks aren't as pointed as say the Matterhorn or Eiger is that extra 65 million years of life wind and erosion rounded them off. As far as height Is concerned, the Colorado Rockies alone have 56 peaks over 14,000 feet while in all of Europe there are only It above 11,000 feet. Up in the air, too, is television in general and ABC-TV in particular. The Federation International de Ski (FT3) is the international ski ruling body and it ruled earlier this month that its television code will be enforced. What it means is no ITS race can be televised by a network without an agree, inent between the network and the country in which it operates.

What that means Is, the TV people must pay rights to the national ski association in its home country. The rule was invoked against ABC which has done more to promote ski racing In the United States than any network through its Olympic Games and Wide World of Sports coverage. But the U.S. Ski Association needs money to train the national team and regards the TV rights as a prime revenue source. No doubt the USSA has been watching the networks ladle out big money to college football and the pro sports and would like to get on the gravy train.
