Sunday Star Herald i JkZfiLX December 12 1993 Outdoors page 5E tQ Opinion page 6E Almanac page 7E SPORTS Speaking of the Huskers Schaller Sports Hr fi Editor Scenes from a mall If you seen the ad vertisement in the past couple of issues of the Star Herald I was out at the Monument Mall helping promote our Cornhusker Pride Shirts They are high quality shirts emblazoned with the front page of the Nov 27 Star Herald in which Nebraska beat Oklahoma to assure the Huskers of a shot at the national championship Anyway the deal was you could come out and chat about the bowl situations and the controversy sur rounding the rankings And seemingly all of you came out and visited One thing that really struck me is how many Colorado transplants we have here myself included (but as a Colorado State alum I like the University of Colorado as much as any Husker fan) One woman started our conver sation by asking if she could get me a tissue In a column last week I expressed my need for Kleenex in coping with all the adversity the Buffs have gone through in prepa ration for the Aloha Bowl just so much Colorado bashing in the Nebraska media just she said She has a point let my kid play for Colorado if he so desired NOT! Just kidding Another gentle reader too gentle and as a lorida State fan like what he was reading about how Nebraska is getting slighted He said the schedule clearly shows lorida State with Notre Dame lorida Miami et al should get credit for playing top teams while the Huskers open with North Texas State and Colorado State (which we should point out is a fine academic institution but it should in fact be the Rams who schedule North Texas State) The guy had been looking for me for some time apparently Over the half hour or so we talked he made some very valid points The guy bleeds Seminoles gold But if Nebraska beats SU on New Day he admitted be a lot of But if Nebraska is blown out he said give me a call If the Huskers do get sent pack ing in a big way I can be reached at 1 800 VACATION Another fan said he was sick and tired of Tom whining I agree with Osborne when he says lorida State be able to basically play at home in a bowl He also said that Osborne have lobbied so hard for West Vir ginia claiming the Huskers were looking for easy to a national title Several shoppers stopped to talk about a possible playoff I hear anyone oppose the idea How ever school must come first If a playoff system was ever set up it would have to be with only the top four teams unless the powers that be want to shorten the season to only eight games All in all there was some very good discussion I really appreciated the nice and even the sometimes not so nice feedback As a journalist my job is not only to make you smile and laugh but to make you think even if that means throwing out some opinions that are contrary to yours The shirts are still on sale today at the mall but be in Denver at the Broncos Chcifs game inter viewing several former Huskers about their thoughts on the Orange
