"The team did a terrific job under the circumstances," said defensive coordinator Jim Young, who took command on the sidelines. "The coaching was a team setup and the strategy was set prior to the game.

But we lost Bo as the leader, and who knows how much that meant to us?" With Young on the sidelines, the Wolverines never gave up the fight. Time just ran out on them as they stubbornly battered away at the USC defenders. Ron Ayala kicked a 25-yard field goal and flanker Bobby Chandler scored the tie-breaking touchdown on a 33-yard pass from quarterback Jimmy Joes in the third quarter. Michigan's only score was Tim Killian's 20-yard field goal, which had tied the game, 3-3, late in the second quarter. But that's what they did when Don CaAam went out and hired Bo Schembechler to be the coach of the Michigan football team. And so now not only an entire university, but a massive alumni and every Michigan man in the country-will anxiously await the next doctor's report from St.

Luke's Hospital in Pasadena. It is a cruel blow that has been struck here a vicious blow. Because all of those hopes sand all of those dreams could come crashing down if they decide that Bo Schembechler has to go easy. This is a man who doesn't know how to go easy. He lives for but one thing football.

It is his entire life. He has a wife and a family; but his wife must be the most understanding woman in the world. She knows of her husband's love for his job, and she goes right down the line with him waking him up in those dark early hours of the morning and waiting up for him when he returns home late at night. Bo Schembechler IS football at Michigan and what the Wolverines accomplished this season, they accomplished because of his great drive, ability and imagination. Mostly his drive.

Ho Did it All LET'S NOT KID ABOUT THIS. Canham hired Schembechler for the sole purpose of restoring the old glories to the ancient school out in Ann Arbor. Too long had Michigan State dominated the football picture in our state. Too long once-mighty Michigan had to take a back seat to the live, bold, imaginative Spartans of Michigan State. So Canham, an ambitious man himself, went out and hired a man who was totally dedicated to this suffered a mild heart seizure.

The players were informed of their coach's illness before the game and Capt. Jim Man-dich called the team together for a private meeting. Some of them wept openly. "It demoralized us," said Mandich. "I don't want to make any excuses, but it just wasn't the same without Bo." "They told us he'd had a ler was stricken before the game and taken to St.

Even though they did an excessive amount of puttering around in the first half, the Longhorns came back like thoroughbreds in a final period that left the crowd of 73,000 gasping. Texas' suave young quarterback, James Street, set up the winning touchdown with a pass to receiver Cotton Speyrer, who had to make a diving catch on the Irish three yard line. Admittedly, it wasn't very artistic.

But it did the job. Three plays later, Texas' infantry brigade ran the ball into the end zone. Schembechler a 1 1 don't know what I've got," said Canham. "Frankly, I'm a little scared by it all." Genius or not, only history will tell. But Bo did it all in his first year.

He woke up a few of the old echoes and restored much of the pride and prestige to this school. He lost to Michiang State but pulled it together and reeled off five straight at the end of the year, topped by that smashing victory over Ohio State. They were afraid, out here, that the Big Ten would be sending its second best team to the Rose Bowl. Team Missed the Leader BUT BO SHOWED THEM. He won the co-championship of the Big Ten the Wolverines flew west with its head high.

And then Bo ran into a very unsettling thing. He ran into the Hollywood atmosphere of this bowl game. It bothered him. It bothered him greatly. He tried to keep it but if he is not working at his profession around the clock, he is a restless man.

His idea of a perfect day would be eight hours of movies, eight hours of meetings and eight hours of practice. He was on the spot here. They wanted to see if the Ohio State game was a fluke, one of those once-in-a-lifetime upsets. But Bo never got a chance to show them and if Turn to Page 5D, Column 2 Street faked to fullback Steve Worster and halfback Billy Dale got the ball, running through a narrow hole in the left side of the Irish defensive line. The score came with 1 :08 remaining.

AFTERWARD, the Long-horns, who seems to attract presidents, got a telephone call from Richard Nixon and a visit from Lyndon Johnson. The latter, whose ranch is only 35 miles from the Texas campus in Austin, confessed that he'd been prejudiced. "I'm sure proud of Darrell Royal's young men and I'm glad we got the breaks," he said. '12th Man' Cost Irish Touchdown? BY WELLS TWOMBLY DALLAS Notre Dame will bp talking about the "12th man" for years but it's unlikely that they'll get anything but sympathy. With 1 :56 to go in the first half of the Cotton Bowl game Thursday, and Notre Dame leading 10-7, Texa-s left guard Randy Stout ran into the game with a play while the Long-horns had the ball at their own 12-yard line.

Apparently realizing that his alternate "messenger boy," left guard Bobby Mitchell, was not coming out of the game, Stout called for time out and field judge Theron Thomsen granted his request. The other officials didn't hear Thomsen, however. The Longhorns ran a play, quarterback James Street fumbled and Mike Kadish recovered for Notre Dame at the five. But referee Cliff Domin-guez ruled the play was dead and Texas kept the ball.
