In the locker room, Stolle smiled sadly and said the match's turning point was "The fellow with the sunglasses" who had made the line call. "John hit a great shot, but the ball was out," Stole insisted. The women's title match between Margaret Court Smith of Australia and Nancy Richey will be the first match Sunday at noon.

The Laver-Ashe match then will be resumed, followed by the Roche-Newcombe semifinal. The downpour had forced postponement of play on both Wednesday and Thursday. Laver is seeking an unprecedented second grand slam of the world's four major titles as well as the $16,000 first-prize money in the $137,000 event. He was on a victory string of 28 straight matches which started at Wimbledon, where he had beaten Ashe in the semifinal. STOLLE lost his composure in the 23rd game of his match with Newcombe when he became infuriated at a linesman's call.

Then Newcombe ians, John Newcombe and Tony Roche, gained their berths for Sunday's other semifinal by defeating Fred Stolle and Earl Buchholz. The Newcombe Stolle match had been halted by darkness at 10-all in the fifth set Friday, but Newcombe took only 15 minutes to wrap up the match, 7-9, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 1311. Roche defeated Buchholz, 6-1, 7-5, 5-7, 6-0. Rain again pagued the tournament, interrupting Ashe and Laver for 17 minutes in the first set and delaying play for two hours and 35 minutes earlier in the day. In a direct about face from the all-time team selected by its baseball counterpart, where the stress was placed heavily on long-ago stars, the pro football Hall of Fame picked five men who were active in the National Football League last season to a place of honor.

They were quarterback Johnny I'nitas and tight end John Markey of the NFI, champion Baltimore Colts, guard Jerry Kramer and linebacker Ray Nltsehke of the Green Bay Packer and half end Don Hutson, flanker El-roy (Crazy Legs) Hirsch and Jim Thorpe. Thorpe, the only deceased member of the team, was singled out "as the star that never diminishes, the Ideal of the athlete incorporated in a body made inhuman by legend." An Indian from Oklahoma, Thorpe won both the decathlon and pentathlon with record-breaking performances in the 1912 Olympics and he played in the World Series with the New York Giants in 1913. With a football, Thorpe could do everything and he was the sport's biggest draw when it worked its way from the town-team era to the NFL. He finally retired in 1925. (kick (ailed).
