That same night Jose Iturbi sat down and played the piano, tf be followed by Miss Mansfield at the piano. Kathryn Grayson then sang an aria, accompanied by Iturbi. She strode the length of the basketball floor at Cobo Arena, Friday night threading through what crowd there was with her head high and light glittering off the spangles which crusted her Chinese-type jacket and winked in her hair.

1 "We- love you, Judy," the crowd shouted. "I love you, too," called out Judy. Judy is easy to love, at least from a distance. Her four divorces, her problems with food and whisky, her suicide attempts and her present degree of financial malnutrition are well known. "But she still manages to come out before a crowd and look everybody in the eye and turn on the big smile.

That takes class. BUT THE HARD CORE of her fans is decreasing. They filled the Masonic Auditorium in 1961 when she was in great voice and it was quite an evening. Friday's affair was a disaster. There were not nearly as many listeners this time.

And Garland barely made it through a limited number of songs. Her low register wasn't up to "Old Man River" and her high notes were painful. She didn't make her appearance until after 10 p.m., at- BY SHIRLEY EDER Free Press Columnist Some 3,400 came out to Cobo Hall in miserable weather Friday just to see and hear a living legend in a sensational spangled pants costume. Her named was Judy Garland, of course, and the outfit was designed fry Travilla for Judy's role in the movie "Valley of the Dolls." Judy never completed her part in the movie, but the costume for the svelte Judy, was right for her, and she was right for it, and somehow she managed to keep it. Jimmy Nederlander, standing with me by the side of stage during Judy's performance, whispered: "She sold out for us every performance for two solid weeks at the Palace in New York.

She broke the all-time house record. She belongs at the Fisher." Later at a small party in Judy's suite at the Pontchar-train Hotel, Judy said, "I was so happy at the Palace. Can I come back again next year?" Jimmy assured her that she could come back anytime she wanted to, and she was welcome to play any and ev Nederland theater (and there are plenty) in the country. They first saw Judy in Westbury, L.I., this past summer and have followed her ever since. Each paid 23 times to see her perform at the Palace. After the show Friday night, Judy's lawyer called her daughter, Lorna, in New York to tell her how things went.

Judy and her older daughter, Liza Minnelli, have become very close again, after a slight rift for a while. Judy, do you realize how much love there is for you in this world? Things came quite apart later during a rather tricky arrangement of "Meet Me In St. Louis, Louis." Judy and the orchestra became e.d down in the middle and, after several attempts at picking' up the pieces and starting' over, decided to give up in mid-song. One of Judy's big movie hits was "Meet Me In St. Louis," filmed in 1945. Judy was trying hard to last out an hour and almost had it made but the audience insisted on the old Garland signature, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." She tried, but it would have been better if she had just smiled out her last few minutes.

They were all very good but they were not what the audience had come for. By the time Judy came on there had been several prolonged sessions of rhythmic clapping and foot stomping. All went well through the "I Felt a Song Coming On" and "This Must Be Love," but the singing was obviously becoming a strain by this time. JUDY RESTED her pipes for awhile by joining the Dun-hills in a soft-shoe rendition of "Me and My Shadow," and meditated about age.

Elizabeth Taylor appears in it briefly as Helen of Troy. Richard was all for taking the deal but between takes of the film they're now making, "Goforth," Liz showed him in black and white how the $2 million profit would not be as much as they could make by releasing the film to movie theaters first and then selling it to a network.

Mr. Burton bowed to Mrs. Burton's fine financial judgment. Diana Ross of the Supremes just ordered a beige Jaguar. Her constant traveling companion, by the way, is Tiffany, a little white terrier.
