-wr DETROIT FREE PRESS 6-D Wednesday, April 27, 77 CASTOFF HAPPY Ar CHICAGO BULLPEN aGrow Returns aun Tigers II mm Sprained Ankle For Rodriguez nun in iini iii.iJ tu i ml -ri''i Lerrin LaGrow, the ex-Tiger, returned Tuesday to haunt his old teammates and as very happy with his accomplishment. LAST SPRING CAME THE change that LaGrow now thinks will make the difference in his career "1 was very down in spring training," he recalled "There was a lot of speculation about whether or not I would even make the staff So I went and talked to Ralph and asked if there was a deal in the works for me and he said there was." Shortly thereafter he was sold to St Louis, but the Cards shipped him out to their Tulsa farm club where he spent most of the summer Near the end of spring training this year, the White Sox acquired him. "When Ralph sold me, he said he thought it would be the best thing for me and I agreed," LaGrow said, denying any bitterness. "I was thankful for it. Sorntimes you just kind of explode; you've got to get out and get away.

That's the way It was with me." Now the White Sox, a club that is supposed to go exactly nowhere this summer, are leading the American League West, and LaGrow is delighted at the ironic turn of events that, deposited him in Comiskey Park "I've got confidence in this club," he said "We've got great momentum going This is the second time we've come from way behind to beat somebody We did the same thing to Boston "And I'm very happy as a reliever No way do I want to start again I enjoy it and, by golly, I'm gonna stay right there in the bullpen "I respect Ralph He's good at handling players And I have a lot of friends on the Tigers But I'm happy right where I am." BY CHARLIE VINCENT Free Press Sports Writer Lerrin LaGrow. never a succcess in Detroit, made a triumphant return to the Motor City Tuesday The big righthander, who won 16 games and lost 40 while with the Tigers, handcuffed his old friends with six innings of dazzling relief to earn the victory in the Chicago White Sox' 10-7, 14-inning victory "It couldn't feel any better than it did to beat Detroit," he smiled. "I love all of them and I respect 'em, but it feels great beating 'em. "It was fun." It was the longest appearance of the season for LaGrow, now the ace of the White Sox bullpen It gave him a win to go along with the three saves he already has to his credit. And the sandy-haired journeyman says he owes it all to manager Ralph Houk.

"I WASN'T BITTER when they sold me to St Louis," he insisted Tuesday afternoon "Them selling me was the best thing in the world for me I wanted out, too. "I was ready for a change You can fall into a pattern, and that was happening to me here We were losing and so was I But since then I've had a little success. "One year here, I started with three or four straight wins, then lost about 1 1 in a row I finished 8-19, 1 believe. I almost lost 20 games," he said, shaking his head. lefthander we're facing," Houk explained.

"I want to give Jason Thompson a day off once In a while at first base, too. "And I can use Mickej both places. Mickey has been hitting the ball real well and I'd like to keep him hitting." Detroit mayor Coleman Young will host a party honoring popular long-time Tigers star Willie Horton at Manoo-gian Mansion Monday evening. Horton. who was traded to Texas for Steve Foucault two weeks ago while the Tigers were in Toronto, returns to town with the Rangers next week for night games at Tiger Stadium Tuesday and Wednesday The party is by invitation only LaGrow insists he's still throwing the ball the same way he did when he left Detroit a year ago "Only the atmosphere is different." he says "The new environment has helped me My whole attitude has changed I don't say Detroit is a loser, because it isn't, but you've got to be careful or you can get in a rut It just seemed everybody just came to the park and put their uniforms on When I went out to pitch, I felt I had as good a chance of losing as 1 did of winning." Tigers Fall in 14lh, BY JIM HAWKINS Free Press Sports Writer For a few frightening moments in the fourth inning Tuesday, as Aurelio Rodriguez lay face-down on home plate, Ralph Houk feared the worst.

The thought of going through the rest of the season without his Golden Glove third baseman was something the Tigers' manager preferred not to consider Fortunately for the Tigers, the Injury to Rodriguez' right ankle which occurred when he slid across the plate during the Tigers' six-run, fourth-inning rally in Tuesday's 10-7 loss to the Chicago White Sox apparently wasn't serious. Rodriguez, who was carried off the field on a stretcher in obvious pain, was taken immediately to Henry Ford hospital, where X-rays revealed nothing more serious than a sprain. In fact, Rodriguez was released and returned to the ball park before the Tigers' 14-inning struggle with the Chisox was over But that was the same ankle Rodriguez injured last Aug. 29 when torn ligaments put him on the sidelines for the last month of the season hence all the concern. "I thought sure as hell he had hurt it real bad," said Houk.

Houk Second baseman Tito Fuentes also left the game with a pulled hamstring, but according to Houk, that injury wasn't serious, either Mickey Stanley played left-field again Tuesday in place of Steve Kemp, as the lefthanded Ken Brett started for Chicago However, Houk insists he still has no intention of pla-tooning his rookie slugger "It will depend on which NOW TRIFECTA iiJ RACING GDI from Marshall Says He's Retired EAST LANSING -(UPI)-Relief pitcher Mike Marshall declared an end to his career with the Atlanta Braves Tuesday, but said he is keeping an "open mind" about a trade. The former Cy Young Award winner was placed on waivers by the club after an open dispute with manager Dave Bristol over pitching philosophies The club suggested a trade and reportedly will begin to work out a deal when the waivers clear Friday. Without closing any options, Marshall said he is not Interested in going to another club. "1 said that I would keep an open mind about it," he said. not something I am actively seeking It's hard for people to understand, but there is life after baseball, as far as I'm concerned, 1 retired." Marshall also left the door open to work for the Braves as a consultant.

"As far as owners are concerned, I'd rather play for Ted Turner than any other owner I know." he said "It's just that right, knocking home a run. Milt May's sacrifice fly was worth another, as was Aurelio Rodriguez's single to left And Tom Veryzer drove in two runs by dropping a double in front of Zisk in right field. THAT WAS THE play that cost the Tigers the services ol Rodriguez for a while as Aurelio sprained his right ankle sliding across home plate behind Stanley But Ron Le Flore followed with a double, too, upping thi Tigers' advantage to 6-1 That looked like it would be more than enough, even thougl singles by Spencer and Soderholm and a two-run double by Jin Essian resulted in another Chicago run in the seventh Then suddenly in the top half of the eighth, with only six out to go, the Tigers found themselves in the middle of a battle again The White Sox got rid of. Rozema as Bannister and Orta both singled and Zisk drove home his second run of the afternoon with a double Houk immediately turned to Hiller, who had been warming up in the bullpen alongside Foucault But the Tigers' ace reliever, who had been outstanding in each of his last four appearances after a shaky start, walked the lefthand hitting Spencer on four pitches to load the bases. Hiller struck out pinch-hitter Johnson, but walked the righthanded Soderholm to force in a run To make matters worse, he walked Chet Lemon, too, to pull the White Sox, who minutes early had appeared out of the game, back within one run.

And after Hiller struck Essian out, Garr sent Spencer home with an infield single, tying the score. THE TIGERS nearly ended the game in the bottom of the 1 2th when Mark Wagner tried to score from first on Ben Oglivie's two-out double that died in the heavy outfield grass in center. But Lemon fired to Bannister, who relayed the throw perfectly to Essian, who blocked the plate and applied the tag, although the Tigers claimed Wagner's foot touched the plate before Essian shoved it aside. Designated hitter Rusty Staub has been taking ground balls at first base during batting practice, just in case anything ever happens to Jason Thompson Rookie Bob Sykes, who got married Monday (The Bird was the best man), will start against the Cincinnati Reds in the Tigers' annual sandlot benefit exhibition Thursday night Ray Bare, without a win so far this season, will oppose Chicago's Francisco Barrios, who is unbeaten in two decisions, in Wednesday afternoon's windup of the two-game series KENTUCKY DERBY May 6-8 163 so Tfontpoftntiofi lodging? WAGERING NOW 10-7 both leagues this season. Balls are manfactured far enough in advance to assure a full supply for the current season, the Rawlings spokesman said. Continued from First Sports clubhouse and forget about it when I go home. Tomorrow is another game." NOT FOR HILLER, however After throwing six innings Tuesday, he will undoubtedly get Wednesday afternoon off When the Tigers matched Soderholm's HR with a run of their own off LaGrow in the bottom of the 13th as rookie Phil Mankowski drove Mickey Stanley home with a single to right, Ralph Houk sent for Foucault, who had been warming up in the bullpen on and off since the seventh inning But Ralph Garr blooped a double to right, Alan Bannister walked, and after Jorge Orta forced Garr at third, Richie Zisk brought home what turned out to be the winning run with his third RBI of the game. A wild pitch by Foucault was worth another, and after walks to Jim Spencer and Lamar Johnson, Soderbolm picked up his third RBI with an infield grounder.

"If you could get 'em out every time you went out there, it wouldn't be a challenge it wouldn't even be a game," philosophized Foucault. who had been perfect in his first three appearances as a Tiger "You just can't do it every time As long as you do it more often than you don't, you're okay LaGrow. who was sold by the Tigers to St Louis last spring, after they gave up on him, and traded by the Cardinals to Chicago this spring for Clay Carroll, gave up four hits and one unearned run in his impressive six-inning performance. BUT AS FAR as the Tigers were concerned, it never should have meant a thing. Although Zisk put the first-place Chisox out in front with a second-inning homer his sixth of the season the Tigers staged their biggest rally of the year on behalf of Rozema in the bottom of the fourth.

Ten Tigers stepped up to the plate and six of them scored to give the 20-year-old righthander a commanding lead for the second game in a row. First, the Tigers filled the bases on singles by Tito Fuentes and Rusty Staub, plus a walk to Jason Thompson Then Mickey Stanley, playing leftfield again in place of Steve Kemp, singled to Suspended Handle Is Traded Continued from First Sports all behind him, McDonald said. "It was wrong, and the player acknowledged that by accepting the suspension and the fine. "Lenny Is a versatile player who can play all three outfield positions and three Infield positions other than first base." AT THE time of the incident, Randle said he had approached Lucchesi and "all I wanted to do was talk, but he said to me, 'What do you got to say I just ran out of cheek Randle is on a four-year contract at a reported $80,000 a year He batted 224 last year and had one home run and 58 runs batted and stole 30 bases His career average since 1970, when he joined the team while the Rangers were still in Washington, is .253. THE AGGRAVATED battery charges were filed in Orange County Randle's attorney said he and Randle heard about the warrant and were shocked "I don't know what to make of it, especially since it happens right on the eve of when his suspension is supposed to end," said attorney Richard Neuhei-sel He said Randle would surrender to the Orange County officials.

In Tempe, Tuesday, Randle waived extradition to return to Florida to face the charges. Randle turned himself into Tempe police and was released on $2,500 bond.
