'fiV. Modern Maud Mullers are the co-eds the University of California who are learning landscape gardening as a profession. These girls are equipped Ith drafting instruments, however. Instead of rakes, and are planning and executing attractive gardenings. These co-eds are learning to plan not only their own gardens, but also to enter the profession of landscape gardening and horticulture.

This Is declared to be in line with the growing interest of women In floriculture and landscape as a profession for women. Labor Organization to Hear Ex-U. S. Official at Big Natal fathering. San Francisco and their activities are herewith presented to the reading public. Mrs.

Irene Ruggles Is president of California State Federation of Colored Women's clubs. has during her residence in this city taken an active part in every movement for the uplift of her race. She is a native of Long Branch, New Jersey, coming to California In 1905 as a ward of Mr. and Mrs. Charles King of Los Angeles.

Since her marriage she has lived In San Francisco, where in 1914 she became a charter member in organizing the San Francisco Women's (colored) club. Later the Madam C. J. Walker club was organized, and she again was not only a charter member, but was elected its fifst president. The work of 'this club was to eecure a home In San Francisco for colored working girls.

It was through Mrs. Ruggles that the Martha Ann Wilson Memorial club was organized in San Francisco. This club is the first of its kind in the state. Mrs. Ruggles was elected its first president.

Similar celebrations will held at the same time in 15 of the principal railroad terminals in the United States. The San Francisco meeting will take place in Moose Hall, 1621 Market street, at o'clock In the evening and will be open to the public. The organization was formed December 1, 1873. by 11 locomotive firemen, all of whom weio employees of the Erie railroad.

24. To preserve the traditions of California and to perpetuate for posterity the thrilling story of the early development of the state, the California State Historical Association hag been organized. The new association Is the outgrowth of the California Historical Survey Commission, which body has thus been placed on a. permanent basis and given enlarged functions. Dr.

Owen C. Coy, former director of the Historical Survey Commission, is director of the new association, and Professor Herbert E. Bolton of the University of California, who was a member of the commission from the time of its establishment' In 1915. is superintendent of the new organization. Professor Louis J.

Paetow, also of the University of California, is chairman of the committee on organization. William J. Hayes, grand president of the Native Sons of the Golden West and well-known Oakland attorney. Is temporary chairman. At the first annual meeting of the for December, officers will be elected representative of aJl sections of the state end all groups interested in the subject of California history.

The association Is to function Under the auspices of the University of California, but will have Its distinct and separate existence, and, It Is expected, will be Membership In the new association Is open to all individuals and organizations interested In California history. Taylor, who has a record for efficiency. Previous to coming to California she taught school in the east for fifteen years. After the death of her husband. Attorney Walter R. Taylor of Los Angeles, she accepted the position as superintendent of the Sojourner Trutli home club for colored working girls in that city.

WOMEN DYE The greatest social event In the history of the colored race In America, occurred Saturday, November 24, at noon in Saint Fhil-lips' Episcopal church in New York City, at which time Dr. H. Gordon Jackson of Chicago was united in marriage to Miss Mate Walker Robinson of New York. Dr. Jackson is the grandson of the late Henry Gordon.

Miss Robinson is the granddaughter of the late Madam J. Walker of New York. ANY GARMEN I Interest to history teachers and their pupils throughout California will be a publication feature. A larger magazine will be insued Quarterly. Books and monographs will be published from time to time.
