Dearl Samples WEST FRANKFORT Dearl Samples, 78, passed away Friday, May 30, 2008, in St. Lukes Hospital in St. Louis. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2008, in Parker Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Rev.

Max Samples officiating. Burial will be in Denning Cemetery in West Frankfort. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to West Frankfort High School Baseball Fund and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Dearl was a retired UMW coal miner retiring from Freeman 3 Mine. He was an avid fisherman, gardener and St. Louis Cardinals fan. His greatest passion was baseball; as a player he excelled at every level, all the way to the professional ranks. He scouted for the St.

Louis Cardinals for more than 25 years. His biggest gratification in life was teaching young players the art of hitting. His legacy is the hundreds of kids who learned He was born Aug. 31, 1928, in Plumfield, a son to Luther Samples and Oralee (Edwards) Samples. He married Virginia Lee Carpenter on March 30, 1955, and she preceded him in death March 1, 2006.

He is survived by his daughter, Janet Schenk and husband, Jim, of Evansville, sons, Mike Samples and wife, Kim, of West Frankfort, Marty Samples and wife, Beth, of Anderson, and Earl Samples and wife Alisa, of Herrin; grandchildren, Tyson and Kara Melvin, Sean and Cristina Melvin, Scott and Leslie Samples, Alison Samples and Jesse Presley, Leah Samples, Amber Samples and Hannah Samples; great-grandchildren, Connor Melvin, Elena Melvin, Dylan Melvin, Tristan Melvin, Zeke Melvin and Jamesyn Samples; brother, Max Samples and wife, Carol, of West Frankfort; sister, Lucille Dixon of West Frankfort; sister-in-law, Bessie Samples of West Frankfort; brothers-in-law Larry Carpenter and wife, Sharon, and Terry Carpenter and wife, Julie; several nieces and nephews; and all the Jims. AVA Connally Ray Eaton 48, passed away at 12:10 p.m. Sunday, June 1 2008, in Ava. Connally was born May 10, 1960 in Murphysboro, the son of Connally Ray Eaton Sr. and Helen (Herd) Eaton Sr. He married Mary L.

Bateman on Aug. 28, 1981 in Murphysboro. He worked as a laborer for Kuhnert Mine Operation. Mr. Eaton is survived by his wife Lynn Eaton; children, Connally Ray Eaton III of Langley Air Force Base, Joshua Paul Eaton of Willisville, Brad Eaton of Murphysboro; his father, Connally Ray Eaton Sr.

of Murphysboro; brother, Russell Eaton of Ava; sisters, Marjorie Eaton of Murphysboro, Peggy Eaton of Steeleville and Donna Eaton Leggett of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his mother. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2008, in Funeral Home in Ava, with the Rev. Francis Bartley will be officiating.

Earl Sanders Jr. HERRIN Earl Sanders 83, passed away Friday May 30, 2008, in Austin, Texas. He had lived in Austin for the past 39 years. Earl was born July 13, 1924, in Herrin, a son to Earl and Pauline Sanders. He lived in Herrin and attended Herrin High School and Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Earl served in the United States Navy as a tail gunner on the Douglass Dauntless Dive Bomber. On finishing his tour of duty, he returned to live in Herrin. Earl met Sylvia Dean White at a local skating rink one summer not long after his return, and he fell hard. They were married July 18, 1948, and would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this summer. They made their home in Carterville for several years.

While they lived there, they were blessed with two fine sons, Mark and Michael. Earl was employed in Herrin by Norge and later by Container Stapling Company, where he was a tool and die maker. In 1963, the family moved to Dunnellon, where he was employed by an injection molding company. Earl was employed by IBM in 1967 and they moved to Lexington, Ky. He was offered the opportunity of working with IBM in Austin and moved in 1968.

He retired in May 1989 after 23 years of service. Earl was a member of the Eastern Star and Masonic Lodges. He was a member of Great Hills Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; his sons, Mark of Giddings, Texas, and Michael of Austin; his daughter-in-law, Corinne; grandson, Warren; granddaughter, Alyssa; sister- in-law and brother-in-law, Bob and Pat Jones of Tucson, nieces, Catherine Gilbert of Hot Springs Village, Lisa Horner of Tucson, Donna Pickett of Jensen Beach, Fla. and Mary Ann Sanders of Sarasota, and his nephew, Terry Sanders of Jacksonville, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Ira Sanders of Dunnellon, Fla. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2008, in Cook-Walden Capitol Parks in Pflugerville, Texas. Takiesha Darcell Davis CARBONDALE Takiesha Darcell Davis, 21, departed this life at 11:43 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2008, at her home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2008, in New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Norman S.

Greer officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Jackson Funeral Home in Carbondale is in charge of arrangements. Todd Barger EQUALITY Todd Stanley Barger, 33, died Friday, May 30, 2008. Graveside services will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Hogan Cemetery near Shawneetown, with the Rev. Duke Williams officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Cox and Son Funeral Home in Ridgway. Patsy Dawes MARION Patsy K. Dawes, 77, died at 8:50 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2008, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.

Arrangements are incomplete at Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City. Loren H. Schwieger OLMSTED Loren H. Schwieger, 76, died at 3:50 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2008, at his home.

He was born Oct. 21, 1931, in Pulaski County, to Otto and Louise (Dagner) Schwieger. He married Carolyn Basse on Dec. 2, 1951. She survives.

He was a member of Olmsted United Methodist Church. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army in Korea. He owned and operated Schwieger Construction Co. until his retirement.

He was a member of Carpenters Local 640. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Olmsted; one daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Phillip Davis of Grand Chain; three granddaughters, Amy, Andrea and Amber Davis; three sisters, Louise Golightly, Thelma Bagby, both of Olmsted, and Ruth Wasson of Metropolis; nieces; nephews; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Norman, Raymond and Cecil. Services will be at noon Tuesday, June 3, 2008, in Olmsted United Methodist Church, with Phillip Davis and the Rev. Pete Ryan officiating.

Interment will be in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens in Villa Ridge. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at the church. Memorials may be made to Olmsted United Methodist Church. Crain Funeral Home in Ullin is in charge of arrangements.

Carolene Mitzi Smith HERRIN Carolene Mitzi Smith died Friday, May 30, 2008, in Herrin Hospital. She was a member of Harvest Time Worship Center. Mitzi was active in her church. She shared her strong faith at every opportunity. Her hobbies included cooking, shopping, computers, photography, playing the keyboard, singing and watching the St.

Louis Cardinals. She loved both her family and her family. She truly will be missed by all. She was born to Margaret Eovaldi and Lon DeCoursey and both preceded her in death, as did her stepfather, Anthony Eovaldi Sr. She is survived by her loving husband, Paul Smith of Herrin; four brothers, Donald DeCoursey, Pete DeCoursey, Roy Thetford and Anthony Eovaldi sister, Deborah Dixon; children, Paula Welker and husband, Randy, of Florida, Shelby Cramer and husband, Wynn, of Chicago and Marty Smith and wife, Vicki, of Zeigler; grandchildren, Joshua Welker, Lindsey and Madison Cramer, Nichole Smith, Tiffany Matier and husband, Dave, and Jesse Smith; and many loved great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June, 3, 2008, in Van Natta Funeral Home, 427 S. Park, Herrin, with the Rev. Todd Hawk officiating. Interment will be in Herrin City Cemetery.

Carlton Killingsworth JOHNSTON CITY Carlton Killingsworth, 77, died at 7 a.m. Sunday, June 1, 2008, in Herrin Hospital. Barney Beard Jr. MARION Barney Beard 78, passed away at 12:30 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2008, in VA Medical Center in Marion. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2008, in Blue Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev.

Jerry Gleason officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion, with military rites by VFW Post 1301, American Legion Post 147 and National Guard. He was a member of Marion Elks and Marion Eagles. Mr. Beard was born Sept. 21, 1929, in Cairo, to Barney L. and Oma Lee (Brimey) Beard.

He married Lois Jean Brown on Oct. 22, 1953, in Herrin. Together they shared 54 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife, Lois of Marion; daughter and son-in-law, LaDonna S. and Doug McNulty of Las Vegas; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth L.

and Carole Beard of Sparks, Nev; daughter and son-in-law, Melanie A. and Jim Rambeaux of St. Petersburg, grandchild, Megan Kathleen Beard; brother and sister-in-law, Jay D. and Marilyn Beard of Rochester, N.Y.; sisters, Sandra Williams of Anna and Helen Imhoff of Carbondale; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

To view this obituary and sign the register book, visit www.bluefuneralhome.com. Lee Edward Johnson CARTERVILLE Lee Edward Johnson, 83, passed away at 7:15 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2008, in Parkway Manor in Marion. Lee was born Nov. 11, 1924, in Macedonia, to Leon and Erma (Tate) Johnson.

He married Norma Lampley on Sept. 30, 1951, in Carbondale. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois. His research of the Johnson family yielded the fact that ancestors of both the Johnson and the Lampley family fought in the Revolutionary War.

The research also brought together distant family members that were heretofore unknown, including Eldora Phillips and Stevie Hughes, both members of the Johnson family line. He was a member of Makanda Masonic Lodge 434 and was a licensed ham radio operator. His first job with the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad was as a telegraph operator. He retired after 42 years of service as a CSA agent. Survivors include his wife, Norma L.

Johnson of Carterville; one daughter, Leann Johnson of Carterville; one son, Donald Edward Johnson of Carterville; one sister, Carol Sue Johnson of Centralia; one niece, Holly Hefty Stradling of Cincinnati; one cousin, Geneva Nagreski of Benton; and special family friend, Angela Simmons. Lee is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Joan Johnson Hefty. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale. Pastor Paul E.

Charles Michael Sheehan DU QUOIN Charles Michael Sheehan, 65, passed away at 4:50 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2008, in Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin. Charles had worked as a tipple operator and driller at Consolidation Coal Company Burning Star 4 at Cutler for 30 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Du Quoin.

He was also a member of UMW of Local 1825, Du Quoin American Legion and Du Quoin Eagles. He was born Nov. 30, 1942, in Du Quoin, the son of Robert W. and Eileen M. (McCrary) Sheehan.

He is survived by his mother, Eileen M. Sheehan of Du Quoin; children, Jim Sheehan and wife, Mij, of Du Quoin and David Sheehan and wife, Angie, of Du Quoin, Amy Sheehan of St. Louis, and their mother, Judy Palmer of Dongola; six grandchildren, Ryan Sheehan, Megan Sheehan, Margaret Sheehan, Andrew Sheehan, Connor Sheehan and Anna Rose Sheehan; brother, Robert W. Sheehan of Du Quoin; and one nephew, John Sheehan of Herrin. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Jack Sheehan.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2008, in Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with the Rev. Joe Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m.

He was born Oct. 13, 1934 in Galatia, the son of Herman and Essie M. (Stanley) Lowery. Jackie was united in marriage to Tammie C. Hart.

She survives. She was a homemaker and of Christian faith. She was a graduate of West Frankfort High School Naomi was born Nov. 3, 1933, in Herrin to Henry Ray and Velda (Kirkpatrick) Moake.

She married Willis L. Hewlett Jr. on Dec. 25, 1956, in West Frankfort. Together they shared 51 years of marriage.

She is survived by her husband, Willis L. Hewlett Jr. of Thompsonville; sons, Larry L. Hewlett and wife, Stephanie, of Woodstock, Bryan K. Hewlett of Thompsonville and Willis L.

Hewlett III and wife, Linda, of Thompsonville; grandchildren, Dustin L.
