And as far as the Tigers are concerned, they don't come any truer or bluer than the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles, a season-long chum of Detroit, handed the Tigers second place Saturday night by outslugging Boston, 7-5, in Memorial Stadium. Brooks Robinson won himself the friendship ring by smashing a two-run homer in the eighth off John Wyatt to pull the Birds in. It was the 10th time Boston has lost to the Orioles this year and this is the club the Tigers whipped 15 times in 18 tries.

Baltimore had cuffed the Red Sox five times in the last week to keep the race tighter than ever. The loss moved the Tigers one percentage point ahead of Boston. Both teams trail the Twins by half a game. The Orioles almost proved to be fair weather friends, though. They blew a 4-0 lead because of sloppy infield play and a two-run shot by Carl Yastrzemski.

But they rallied to tie the game off Gary Waslewski in the seventh. Then Wyatt took over and the Birds took off. FRANK ROBINSON slashed his third hit of the game, a line single to center with one out in the eighth. Brooks drilled his 22nd homer into the leftfield seats and that was that. The blast atoned for a rare error by the third baseman which opened the way for a four-run Boston uprising in the fifth.

Trailing, 4-1, the Red Sox put a man on with one out. Joe Foy then sent a nubber past the mound. Robinson, charging hard, fielded the ball but fired it wide of first into short rightfield. Jose Tartabull, the man on first, raced in to score and Foy went to third. Mike Andrews then sent a soft tap to first baseman John With no chance at all for a play at the plate, Powell tried for a play at the plate.

Yastrzemski then whacked his 42nd homer to the opposite field off Baltimore starter Gene Brabender to put the Bosox ahead. THE ORIOLES routed Lee Strange in three innings. Curt Blefary homered in the first.

The fly ball went for a double by Blefary. Paul Blair followed with a single and Frank Robinson smashed his 30th homer to rightfield. Harrelson crashed into the wall trying for the ball and had to leave the game in the next inning. Waslewski, stymied the Orioles for three innings. But he walked Dave Johnson in the seventh and pinch-hitter Dave May bounced a single past the right side.

Luis Aparicio sent a sacrifice fly to deep left to tie the game and then the Robinsons took over in the eighth. Stu Miller, who fired his slow ball at the Red Sox for the last two innings, raised his record to a staggering 3-10 with the victory. Fritz Peterson allowed the Twins two hits in the first inning, then retired 10 men in a row until Rod Carew bounced a single to center leading off the fifth. Ted Uhlaender sacrificed Carew to second before pinch hitter Frank Kastro struck out. CARROLL HARDY, former major leager called up three weeks ago from Denver of the Pacific Coast League, then hit a pinch homer to break the scoring ice for Minnesota. Peterson, who got the victory for an 8-14 record, ran into trouble in the sixth when Shopay dropped a fly and a Yankee throw on an attempted fielder's choice was late. Then the Yankee hurler had to leave the game with a twisted left ankle; Dooley Womack relieved him and walked Carew to load the bases, but ended the threat by getting Uhlaender to fly out.

Munn and Daugherty scheduled the game as a favor to Yeoman, a former Daugherty assistant for eight years, when Yeoman got the head job at Houston. They didn't know what they were getting into. They found out Saturday, though, as Houston won its second straight in impressive fashion and there can be no doubt that McVea is legitimate All-American material. And the Cougars have a couple other boys who aren't bad, either.

Like split end Ken Hebert, leading scorer in the nation last year, and flanker Don Bean. Oh, MSU turned off Texas tornado Warren McVea, dumping him six times for losses ranging from one to four yards. Trouble was, the San Antonio senior running back also turned in runs of 50, 48, 33, 17 and 14 yards and even though he sat out most of the fourth quarter, finished with 155 yards in 14 carries. That didn't hurt his varsity average of gaining better than 10 yards every time he's touched the ball. Houston was quick, fast and didn't waste its opportunities.

State was slower, plodders by comparison, and squandered its chances terribly. BY JACK BERRY Free Press Sports Writer EAST LANSING Duffy Daughtery says a team makes its greatest improvement between its first and second games. Well, the Michigan State coach will have a whale of a lot to improve on before the Spartans meet Southern California next Saturday. The University of Houston, coached by ex-old friend Bill Yeoman, stunned and crushed the Spartans, 37-7, Saturday before 75,833 shocked fans. It was the worst defeat in Daugherty's 14 years as head coach and no Spartan team has been beaten worse since Michigan crushed State, 55-0, in Biggie Munn's debut 21 years ago.

He stayed cool. Vidmer passed once to Sharpe for 16 yards, then wasted one to stop the clock.

He came back and hit his other halfback Ron Johnson for another 23 yards to the Duke 10. Tigers Get Flag Range BY GEORGE CANTOR Free Press Sports Writer WASHINGTON The Great Race continued Saturday, but the Tigers took a brief pause before making their last mad dash toward the American League pennant. While their three rivals were playing, the Tigers had a rare Saturday off, giving manager Mayo Smith time to mull his pitching line-up for the final week.

The pitching rotation is off just enough to keep Joe Sparma, a latterday Frank Lary in the art of Yankee-killing, from opposing New York again. SPARMA, a 15-game winner, will face the Senators Sunday in the windup of the series here. Denny McLain's injured foot has cramped Smith's maneuverability with his staff, so he is considering bringing Earl Wilson back with only two days' rest to hurl the opener of the Yankee series in New York Monday night. Mickey Lolich did the trick here Friday night with a shutout. The Tiger manager has little choice but to go with his best with seven games left in this greatest American League race.

Lolich will be ready for the windup of the two-game set in New York Tuesday night. Then the Tigers have their final day off Wednesday. The California Angels will be at Tiger Stadium for the last four games starting Thursday.
