by Dr Ron Cox He was for many years a teacher in Croydon and later worked for Croydon education committee He has been researching the history of education in Croydon through the school log books which have been kept since the middle of the last century Some schools at the beginning of the century nad classes of 90 or more often of a wide range of age and ability and teachers were expected to maintain strict discipline and get good examination results The children were tested by the inspectors and head teachers were paid by results Some children had to walk over three miles to school often poorly shod Many children had inadequate clothing were seriously under-nourished and sickness was rife Some diseases listed in the logbooks were smallpox English cholera and scarlet fever The death rate of children of school age was very high Teachers had to cope svith unsuitable buildings and over-crowding often two or more classes in one room Heating was from a boiler in the comer of the classroom and the log books often record shortages and non-deliveries of fuel One head teacher in desperation bought coal from the local greengrocer and paid for it out of his own pocket Children were caned for making mistakes in their work inattention and even not sitting properly at their desks There is a record of a boy who was caned and lectured by the vicar for saying a bad word in front of the girls Noteworthy A LIFE in music was outlined by Cecelia Durrant to Pollards Evng TG Starting to show the makings of a good singer from a tender age her introduction was through to church music singing in a choir madrigal singing and motets Progressing to a singing course at the Borough Polytechnic and participating in major choral works was all explained by Mrs Durrant and illustrated with territorial rights and financial problems involved with tunneling up against the cheaper but more roundabout route for a journey from A to Dolly past THE history of dolls was the subject of the talk within one week of the dedication on December 28 1065 Digging in SINCE gardens and plants Eo together it was logical to ave a plant sale on the evening that Mr Bath spoke to Kingswood Warren WI on gardening raising £25 in sales Pensioners from London are being entertained on May 25 and on June 8 with a charity lunch followed by a talk on modem embroidery The birthday flowers ar-ranged by
