Charter students' state test scores low Rolling Stones news conference meant for an editor and brought her camera along to the event. It turned out she was the only photographer the Stones allowed on board their yacht in the Hudson River. When she got back to dry land, her photos were in demand.

Two shots taken that day are included in the exhibit of 47 pictures. The subject list of the collection reads like a who's who of late 1960s music: the Who, the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, Janis Jop-lin, Aretha Franklin and, of course, the Beatles. Some of the pictures will be familiar to rock 'n' roll fans. A shot of Mr. McCartney with the couple's baby daughter, Mary, peeking out of his jacket was used as a cover photo on Mr.

McCartney's first solo album. Others pictures are not as famous but perhaps more interesting. Ms. Joplin's insecurity is captured in a close-up of her face as she takes a long drag on a cigarette. "Janis Joplin was a confident performer but not a confident person," Mrs.

McCartney is quoted as saying in notes with the photograph. And the tension between Mr. McCartney and fellow Beatle John Lennon is obvious in a face-to-face BY JOHN AFFLECK The Associated Press CLEVELAND Paul McCartney has been enshrined in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice as a Beatle and a solo artist. Now the work of his late wife, Linda, is there too. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum will open a temporary exhibition today of Mrs.

McCartney's best photos from the 1960s. Mrs. McCartney, who died of breast cancer in April 1998, was an award-winning professional photographer. She specialized in taking portraits that used only available light, avoiding the obtrusiveness of flashbulbs. "To me, it's the natural, unposed nature of her pictures the simplicity and yet at the same time the power of both the individual and the musical performance that she captured that makes her a great photographer," Terry Stewart, the rock hall's executive director and chief executive officer, said at a preview of Mrs.

McCartney's collection on Friday. She got her start while working as a receptionist for Town and Country magazine in 1966. McCartney said in a written statement. "One reason I know she would be particularly proud to be exhibiting in Cleveland is that her mother originally hailed from there." have small student bodies and are still putting their curricula in place, she said. "There certainly is an adjustment period," she said. "But I don't think it's OK that students aren't doing well." The education department isn't stepping in to improve charter, schools' scores. But its resources and help are available, Ms.

Rogers said. Called community schools in Ohio, charter schools are privately run, publicly funded schools. They are free of some state regulations applied to regular public schools. There were 217 charter school fourth-graders and 212 sixth-graders who took the proficiency tests in March. More than 129,000 public school fourth-graders and more than 126,000 sixth-graders took the tests.

The Associated Press COLUMBUS Fourth- and sixth-graders at Ohio's charter schools scored dismally on almost all portions of the state proficiency tests, results show. Only 2 percent of fourth-graders and 1 percent of sixth-graders passed all five tests of writing, reading, math, citizenship and science. By comparison, 32 percent of public school fourth-graders and 33 percent of public school sixth-graders passed all five sections. "There certainly is room for improvement, there's no question about that," LeeAnne Rogers, an Ohio Department of Education spokeswoman, said Friday. Ms.

Rogers cautioned against overreacting to the results. Most of the schools are in their first year, Results were released this week. At 130-student Aurora Academy in Toledo, no sixth-graders and only 3 percent of fourth-graders passed all five tests. Board President Shawn Koons said he believes it's unfair to measure the school's success on the tests after only one year. Better to judge after two or three years, he said Friday.

"The proficiencies we would have given this year are not based on everything students learned this year," Mr. Koons said. "It's kind of a compilation of what they learned over the past few years." State Rep. Sally Perz, a longtime supporter of charter schools, said the low scores say as much about the students and their educational background as it does about the schools' fledgling academic efforts. Mr. Pittman pleaded not guilty Thursday at his arraignment. His arrest this week came in large part due to the persistence of Ms. Franklin and her 78-year-old mother, Maria Parker. They contacted Cleveland police Detective Gary Garisek and persuaded him to check the unsolved case.

That was welcome news for Ms. Franklin, 48, now an assistant director of voter registration and education services for the state.
