5un.I.iy, IYluui'ry 1.1, 1P72 THE CINCINNATI 1 Ml nn llT-iilfio-iitmr I4, MI JTS." 1 lllllll 1 IIWO SUIIIIflBS For U. S. Developing SST AVIATION military tanker fleet for the B-ls? Wouldn't that be a possibility? Not now. The prelected B-l can be handled adequately by the current subsonic tanker fieet. It's going to be tough enough to finance the B-l without mentioniijng a billion dollar tanker fleet In1 the same breath.

HOWEVER, the possibility does exist that an American SST could ride in piggy-back on a future supersonic tanker design. It's a long way off, but soomer or later the current tanker fleet Is going to wear out. It will have to be replaced, ulitmately, urn-less manned bombers are phased out completely. 1 5 Bv BOB BRUMFIELD Enquirer Aviation Writer It's a very "iffy" proposition, but America stilll might pet its supersonic transport program off the ground one of these days. However, any hopes of an SST to compete with the Anglo-French Concorde or the Soviet TU-144 appears to be completely out the window.

The Boeing SST program has had It. And even' if the money were available right now which it Isn't there would be little or no possibility of an American! manufacturer fielding an SST during the expected life span of the first generation of foreign supersonic transports. Even the oBeing design, although superior In most respects to the Concorde and Tupolev aircraft, would not have been operational until several years after the competition was In service. Okay, so assuming that this country decides that a second or third generation SST would be viable, economically, who's going to foot the bill for research and development? Private business? Forget it We're talking about too much capital. Government? Possibly, but it isn't likely tUat Congress would hold still for a straight handout to Industry.

now THEN? Well, traditionally. American civil aviation transports have been developed by the military, using Department of De-sonrch and development of vent of tine current fleet of Jumbo the wide-bodied jots DOD money was used for re-searcha nd development of transport aircraft. The Boeing 707, for example, mainstay of most of the world's civil caariers, was developed as the KC-135 jet tanker and military transport. There was a military need for such an aircraft and the civilian version was a logical spinoff benefit. Is there a military need for a supersonic transport? Not now.

Could a transport version of a supersonic bomber such as the new B-l Is too small, for one wouldn't be practical as a commercial carrier. The B-l is too small, of none thing, and the basic design just Isn't compatible with airline usage for a number of engineering reasons. Forget the B-l as far as am SST is concerned. How about a supersonic Is? i i i i -n pi ir-B. rani r- fa m4i hi wi i I II 1 9 III FLu All iM 1 9 Hktf TiLa 4 mmvm mum rtst li rmi i earn mm a ii rN.

Current military thinking favors the slower, cheaper tanker, based at various bases throughout the 1 di Since air-to-air refueling at supersonic speeds is Impractical If not Impossible there Is no real need for super sonic tankers at present, according to the military. But if not attractive from a tactical point of view, now, a supersonic tanker might find future favor from an economic standpoint. When and If the need for a new tanker fleet develops, money is surely going to be a big hurdle. The ratio of tankers to bombers could be a critical factor. One jumbo tanker with a speed of Mach.

4 would be able to give several thirsty bombers a "drink" at one spot, speed to another rendezvous hundreds or thousands of miles away and refuel another strike force- and then catch the returning bombers for another little taste on the way home. THERE WOULD be not need for a large number of tankers stationed at a number of rendezvous points. Fewer planes, less money, tactical advantages and mission performance plus the added feature of a spinoff civilian transport possessing the advantages of hypersonic speed find large passenger capacity. It's all hypothetical, of course, but the ldieia has enough merit for William McGruder, President Nixon's consultant on technology and former head of the American SST program to remark that "it could be a way for us to get an SST in the future." i A1 1 111 lao I in I mWii iiiiihtnif ii nwr iii-T-iirTiii'i ti--- --x kJj BATH TOWELS IF PERFECT I.75 A FABULOUS FIRST FOR US!
