November 29 1982 25 Wigan erase Cup memories Rovers deliver quick one-two Gillingham 0 Wigan 2: Wigan came up with the best possible result to wipe out those memories of the midweek FA Cup exit at the hands of non-League Telford Their first ever visit to Gillingham coincided with the debut of 17-year-old schoolboy Mark Shaw and the gaining of three points which were thoroughly deserved Making light of the absence of seven first team players injured Wigan improved more and more as tne game progressed and in the end won as comfortably as the scoreline suggested Their defence bravely weathered early pressure and a 15th minute goal from Kevin Langley provided just the confidence booster they needed The nearest Gillingham came to scoring was after 62 minutes when a header from Neil Grewcock struck a post Three minutes later John Butler set up the chance for David Lowe to hit home a 25 yards shot That goal clinched the issue in favour and only a fine save by Ron Hillyard prevented Shaw from registering a debut goal Same old Chester problems Hull City 2 Chester 0: problems in front of goal continued at Booth Ferry Park where Hnll were rarely extended as they banked three more points towards their promotion challenge The Seals had little to offer in attack apart from a first half cross by Martin Lane which rapped the angle of bar and post But they defended strongly with Trevor Stor-ton and Lane prominent and a lacklustre first half seemed to be a hangover from both exit from the FA Cap in midweek Hull sprang to life after the interval and roused a 5047 crowd with excellent goals by Brian Marwood and Steve McClaren in the 48th and 55th minutes Chester missed chances when John Thomas twice blazed wide with only the goalkeeper to beat and Paul Needham twice finished weakly from good positions The Seals had Clive Wilson booked in the second half for a foul on Gareth Roberts showed the forwards how with a speculative 30 yards shot which Scott Endersby reached but could not 'revent sneaking inside is left hand post at a crucial stage on the stroke of half-time As the second half ticked away one began to sense Rovers in their moment of need could get something out of the match even though the Hereford back four looked so solid The break came in the 67th minute when John Aspinall switched play from left to right with a searching ball which just eluded Danny Bartley Mark Ferguson nipped round the fullback and his powerful shot was helped on its way into the net by Gary Plumley Hereford were suddenly all at sea Rovers attacked again straight from the restart Ferguson found Ian Griffiths on the left and his low cross was driven home by Aspinall Tranmere Rovers 2 Hereford 1: It seemed no matter how hard Tranmere Rovers tried at Pren-ton Park on Saturday they were not going to succeed Hereford still without an away league win looked so safe so sure and so determined for so long Then in the space on 90 seconds Rovers turned the match inside out with two goals The 3194 crowd suddenly produced a roar the Birkenhead ground has not enjoyed for many a day and after Rovers leg weary troops hung on dourly in the face of a late Hereford onslaught there was a standing ovation and the singing of support you ever Rovers would not claim they were at their best on Saturday Indeed they were often outplayed by a Hereford side which adapted well to the heavy conditions Tranmere player-manager Brian Hamilton Blues reach third round Everton 3 Stoke City 1: Everton are through to the third round of the FA Youth Cup but it took some desperate defensive play late on to hold on The Blues got an early fright when Lennox hit the bar but gradually got into their stride Waken-shaw scored at 18 minutes and then took control Stoke equalised at 61 Bryan Hamilton admitted were awful in the first but then he added the second half we battled and we deserved the points in the Hereford failed because they did not take their goalmouth chances to back up some sound mid-field work by Ian Bray Jim Harvey and Dixie McNeil Indeed it was fullback Chris Price who finally dearly the fight for survival is only just beginning The vital talks will begin next weekend when businessman Bill McAteer arrives from America He has come up with one offer Wirral Council has iced another The ranmere board must now find a solution for it is Fans answer distress calls RESULTS Youth Cup TRANMERE youth side has an important date this evening They will be in action in the Midlands against Birmingham City in the second round of the FA Youth Cup and expect to field the side which disposed of Doncaster in round one CROSSWORD Choose which way you tackle this crossword according to the time you can afford cryptic clues are on the left high speed ones on the right The same diagram will do for either set of dues but solutions are different so clues are not Interchangeable clear Wirral wants to retain its league dub and help it to achieve greatness Said Tranmere
