Scottsbluff Rogers' 51 Yard ield Goal Peps UN by Wyoming 13 10 By ODELL HANSON (Associated Press Writer) LINCOLN Sophomore Paul Rogers kicked a 51 yard field goal with only 21 seconds to play to give hard pressed Nebraska a 13 10 victory over Wyoming before a crowd of 65018 in the 1968 football opener for both teams in Memorial Stadium Sat urday afternoon The game second in history between the schools was the first in 34 years In the 1934 meeting Nebraska was a 50 0 winner under Coach Dana Bible The late Willard (Dutch) Witte had the reins on the Cowboys that season Substitute quarterback Ernie Sigler had rallied Nebraska ear lier in the period to knot the count and put the Buskers in reach of victory after they had trailed most of the sunny after noon Wyoming fashioned a 10 3 lead in the first quarter and make it stand until the final period when Sigler a senior long cast in a backup role got the Buskers moving Sigler started a 71 yard game tying drive with a 23 yard sprint after being trapped while attempting to pass Bis pass to Larry rost cov ered 17 yards and a 17 yard touchdown toss to Jim Mc arland capped the assault Rogers kicked the tying conver sion Sophomore Ed Snyakowski in a sparkling quarterback debut for Wyoming stunned Nebraska with a 54 yard touchdown pass to Gene Buey in the first quar ter after sophomore Bob Jacobs had given Wyoming its first points on a 35 yard field goal Nebraska countered i a 26 yard field goal by Rogers be fore the first quarter ended and the 10 3 Wyoming lead held fast through the ensuing two pe riods or Bob Devaney whose Ne braska club was ranked 14th in Sigler Emerges as Top QB or Huskers After Sub Role LINCOLN (AP) Ernie Sigler quarterback from Dallas who had appeared destined to close out his senior year as one of those perennial understudies was the toast of his Nebraska teammates and coaches Satur day after a 13 10 football win over Wyoming never been a more dedicated athlete than Ernie Sigler and one of the nicest guys ever said Jim Mcarland a hero in his own right for catching a Sigler touchdown pass he came in there today he just lifted Said Busker Coach Bob De vaney of Sigler: taken as tough a beating as anyone ever seen this was the first real chance ever given Sigler taking over for rank Patrick rallied a sputtering of fense for a fourth quarter touch down after the Huskers had trailed 10 3 since the first quar ter Sophomore Paul Rogers kicked the game tieing conversion af ter an earlier 26 yard field goal and then buried hopes with a 51 yard downwind field goal 21 seconds of game time remaining even notice where the ball was said Rogers afterwards I knew if I hit it right and got enough power behind it it would be Devaney said hate to have to win every week on a 51 yard field The coach indicated that for the moment at least Sigler has earned the top quarterback spot has got to show us now that better than Devaney said Wyoming Coach Lloyd Eaton summed up the contest like this: came to play But I guess we just get our game together The Huskers are plenty penalties killed any chances we had of gaining a he said Wyoming amassed 112 yards in penalties to only 35 for Ne braska pre season polling it was a seventh straight opening game win as a Busker coach Conversely it was Wyoming Coach Lloyd first set back in seven opening games Wyoming was unranked among the top 20 this fall de spite a 10 1 season and a sixth ranking nationally last year But the rebuilding Cowboys de fensively rugged made it a long afternoon for Nebraska Synakowski accounted for 75 passing yards and Dave Hamp ton with 73 yards and Joe Wil liams with 51 led Wyoming rush ers or Nebraska starting quar terback rank Patrick complet ed 3 of 13 passes while Sigler connected on 3 of 6 ullback Dick Davis rushed for 93 yards On the second Husker play from scrimmage Wyoming defenders forced a Davis fum ble and Nebraska could get nothing in high gear until the latter stages Nebraska gained only 69 yards during the first half 36 of them by rush ing while Wyoming was gaining 129 Sigler and a second string of fensive unit saw a third quarter drive bog down on 12 But the Huskers remained in general the second quarter when Ron James ran 51 yards Bill Byrd plunged for two yards and a touchdown in the third quarter play Saturday to beat New Mex ico State 28 12 in a nonconfer ence football game USU opened the scoring in the first quarter when quarterback John Pappas hit split end Mike in the end zone from six yards out Pappas passes to and Ken DeMartini of 31 and 34 yards keyed the drive Later in the same quarter Utah State scatback Altie Tay lor took a punt on his won 38 yard line and raced to the New Mexico 15 On the next play Pappas again hit for the touchdown In the second quarter Taylor followed another New Mexico punt with a run around right end for a 58 yard touchdown Utah State scored midway through the third quarter as Simpson Swamps Plainsmen 54 20 INDIANOLA Iowa (AP) Simpson romped over Nebraska Wesleyan 54 20 here Saturday night despite an injury which put sophomore quarterback Joe Blake out in the second quar ter US Olympic Swimmers Break World Record AIR ORCE ACADEMY Colo Members of the US Olympic swimming team surpassed one world record and two American records during a Saturday night exhibition here where they are training to get accustomed to competing at high altitudes Zach Zorn Don Schollander Doug Russell and Mike Stitz were clocked in 1:355 to top the world mark of 1:371 in the 200 meter freestyle relay In the 200 meter med ley Charles Hickcox Don Mc Kenzie Russell and Zorn posted 1:465 mark to exceed the pend ing American mark of 1:487 Kay Hall Catie Ball Ellie Daniel and Sue Pederson zipped through the 400 meter medley relay in 4:281 to sur pass the American mark of 4:300 Team officials said the marks would be forwarded to the US Swimming ederation for certi fication A crowd of 2000 watched the exhibition The team is training here conference game Saturday night Each team scored three touch downs but Chadron made the conversion on the final score and Southern's kick failed Southern scored first in the opening quarter but at half time Chadron led 14 7 Southern scored again in the third quar ter and drove 60 yards after a fumble recovery for their final score But extra point on a fourth quarter touchdown made the differnece University won its first football game in 11 starts as it upset the NAIA sixth ranked Kearney State Antelopes Satur day night by a 26 20 margin It was a fired up Washbum team playing its first game since the college temporarily can celed football last spring The schedule was again picked up after students petitioned for a reconsideration and raised $20000 to pay for the coaching staff salaries and other costs But Washbum had to come from behind in the fourth quar ter after matching scoring in the third quarter and still trailing by six The fourth quarter tally came from a two yard Steve
