THE PROGRAM opened with Prokofiev's "Classical" Symphony, a bit of Russian whim-sey. In the performance of it, the orchestra was up to its best standards in the latter movements, but seemed a little unsure of itself in the first movement. Schippers, too, was not up to his usual standards in the this work, for while it was well played, his interpretation seemed to lack the necessary of lightness of touch.

The extended woodwind introduction of his second movement and the later discourses between the solo violin and the individual woodwinds, especially the obo, were memorable. Since, as with most concertos there must be close-co-operation between the solo instrument and the orchestra, gratitude must be expressed not only to Milstein but to the orchestra and its guest-conductor, Thomas Schippers for an unforgettable performance. The purely orchestral work of the evening was the Sibelius Symphony No. 2, the most popular of his symphonies, a conductor's delight with its darkly sonorous outbursts, its melan-rholv lyricism and a passionately declamatory finale. mm Academy award nominee Patty Duke will head a star-studded list of guests at the St.
