1 Sunday, November 8, 1964 THE DETROIT DAILY PRESS A-17; 111 5 era emUM ip JPSvk EJp COLUMBUS, O. Penn State pulled off the upset of the 1964 collegiate season Saturday by drubbing previously unbeaten Ohio State, 27-0, before more than 82,400 stunned spectators. It was the fourth time Penn State had downed Spartans Humble Purdue pS -v fr-' -r'-r stringers on the field, State could do nothing. By BOB PILLE Doily Press Staff Writer ANN ARBOR Michigan rolled to the customary family decision over Illinois, 21-6, on a nationally televised game Saturday that left the Wolverines with their best football status in a decade. It was the Wolverines' sixth straight over the Illini, their fifth for Coach! In the Big Ten, Michigan and Purdue are now tied for second with 4-1 behind Ohio State (4-0).

The Wolverines made their breaks for a 14-6 halftime lead, then dominated the rest of the cloudy afternoon before a crowd limited to 62,415 by the presence of the video. DIDN'T MATTER If their 235 yards gained were well below their third-in-the- nation offensive record of 382, it didn't really matter for Michigan. Illinois got 234 yards, but the Michigan defensive platoon really was more impres-rive than that. Except for Fred Custardo's 49-yard pass to end Bob Trum-py for a second-quarter touchdown, the Illini were never Ohio in as many battles. Thei Buckeyes, with a 6-0 record and second-ranked- nationally, had taken the field at least a two touchdown choice.

But they never were in the game against the Nittany Lions, who fashioned only their fourth conquest of the season. In fact, the Buckeyes barely were able to wind up on the plus side in yardage gained and had only one threat all afternoon. That was wiped out by an intercepted pass at the goal line. The astonishing Penn State eleven bounced off to a fast start by marching 65 yards for a touchdown when Dick Nye fell on a fumble by teammate Bill Urbanek in the end zone. Then an intercepted pass started Penn State to its second touchdown.

Taking over on the Bucks' 30, it required only five plays before Gary Wydman smashed into the end zone. Penn State kept up its bombardment with a 45-yard drive which required seven plays. Don Kiinit cracked for the touchdown and that made the score 20-0. i nr. of Illinois in ihe first PITT JUST MISSES, 17-13 Irish Eke Out Victory 3-14 12-22 0 2 10 20 wiwiiiiwyipiiiwrwwwwi By JACK BERRY Daily Press Sports Writer EAST LANSING Sweet, sweet revenge. Michigan State, with a crunching ground game that picked up 302 yards and a sprinkle of passes, Saturday showed Purdue the thorn leading to the Rose Bowl and punished the Boilermakers, 21-7, to the thorough enjoyment of a selilout crowd of 75,433. And who are the Spoiler-makers now? They are Charles Thornhill (the hurdling guard blocked a punt.) and Harold Lucas (he caught it) and stepped into the end zone lor the first MSU touchdown. And Dick Gordon, who raced for 145 yards after a 199 show last week, and running mate Clinton Jones, who scored twice, once a 15-yard pass from quarterback Steve Ju-day.

TABLES TURNED MSU, which had a 28-game winning streak snapped by Purdue in 1953, was deprived of Rose Bowl trips in the 1957 and 1961 seasons by Purdue upsets, showed the Boilermakers how it feels. This was Purdue's first Big Ten loss after four victories and it gives Michigan a big shot at the Rose Bowl, setting rp the Michigan-Ohio State game as the key one. The Spartans, 3-2 now in the conference and 4-3 overall, slso will have a big say about the national championship since they go to top-ranked Notre Dame next Saturday. MSU ALL THE WAY This was all MSU's game even though Purdue scored first and the Spartans didn't break in front until the third quarter. On the game's fiist scrimmage play, Gordon raced 48 yards to the Purdue 32 before being pulled down from behind.

MSU stalled at the 14 and vas pushed back before Purdue rolled back with a 74-yard 10-play drive. Randy Minniear went the final eight, pulling away from Charley Migyanka. The rest of the time. MSU pulled away from Purdue. The Spartans were punishing physically, too.

Bob Had-rick, sophomore Bob Griese's favorite receiver, sprained his ankle on the fourth play of the second quarter and left for the afternoon, hurting the Boilermaker offense. JUDAY IS JOLTED State had a scare of its own when Juday was shaken up in the second quarter while leading the interference for Gordon, but sophomore John Mullen took over effectively until the Northville junior returned in the third quarter. MSU drove to the 13 with Mullen in and fumbled, but the Spartans held and Thorn- hill performed his fancy hurdling act. The five-foot-10, 202-pound sophomore guard flew head first over three Purdue blockers to deflect Russ Pfahler's punt. Lucas, a six-two.

257-junior from Detroit Southwestern, grabbed it and wrent in untouched from the MSU ON THE MOVE MSU broke up the game in the second half with its power sweeps that looked like the good old days. The Spartans went 54 yards in five plays for Jones' first touchdown a three-yard sprint. A 23-yard reverse by Jones was one of the big plays, but MSU had some trouble when successive penalties for 20 (Continued on Page 18A) Spartan Facts Ohio edge-up! 1 1.1 emm. yvtbjmwywmm. A.

Braves Told By NL: Stay Put for 1965 PHOENIX, Ariz. The National League Saturday ordered the Milwaukee Braves to stay in Milwaukee for the 1965 season. However, the league said that it "would be in the best interest of baseball" for the Braves to move to Atlanta, in 1966.

The action came after Mil waukee County officials filed a court injunction against the Braves, insisting that the Braves had a contract to play in Milwaukee next season. County officials rapped the league's announcement, claim- ing that it would ruin all interest in Milwaukee for 1965. Braves' officials had no comment.
