The game was tied eight times in the first half and the Wolverines managed to come up with a 39-36 halftime lead. Illinois caught fire in the ond half and went ahead, 49-45, with slightly more than three minutes gone.

But Michigan came back to take the lead for good with 11:47 remaining when big Bill Buntin scored on a layup to push Michigan ahead, 54-53. Then Buntin scored Michigan's next 12 points to push the Wolverines into a 66-58 lead. BUNTIN HAD 27 points and Michigan held a 76-71 lead when he fouled out with little more than three minutes remaining. Michigan then went into a stall and got a scare when Bill Burwell scored on a layup with nine seconds remaining to pull Illinois within one point at 82-81. But then Michigan's Larry Tregoning hit on a layup with only one second remaining to make the final score 84-81.

Doug Herner had made it 82-77 with a layup with 42 seconds on the clock. THE LOSS dropped Illinois into second place. Ohio State, the co-leader prior to Saturday's, could take sole possession of the -Big Ten lead with a victory over cellar-dwelling Purdue in a night game. Ohio State, the defending champion, and Illinois, had been tied with 9-2 records. (jfi North-western's Rich Falk scored 28 points Saturday night to power the Wildcats to a 76-66 conquest of Iowa in a Big Ten basketball game. The result left both teams tied for sixth place in the conference race with 5-7 records.

The Northwestern victory avenged an earlier double-overtime loss to Iowa, 66-65, on the Wildcats' floor. Wats Drub The Pistons, 152 to 128 SYRACUSE The Syracuse Nationals caught fire here night in a torrid third period and went on to defeat the Detroit Pistons, 152-128, in a National Basketball Associa-tlon game. The two squads left immediately for Detroit and a 3 p.m contest at Cobo Arena. THE PISTONS squandered a 14-point lead built up in the first 20 "minutes, fell behind midway through the third quarter and thtenwere bombed in the final -five minutes of the period when Syracuse out-scored them, 25-8. The 51 point Syracuse scored against Detroit equalled a club record which ironically was set two' years ago at the expense of, the Pistons. It was Detroit's third defeat in its last nine games and hampered its chances of finishing third and gaining an NBA play off post.
