WASHINGTON, Feb. 4 During 1940 production of primary alumi num exceeded the peak reached in 1939 by 28 per cent and consumps tion rose 35 per cent above 19!9, the Bureau of Mines reporter, today. Officials said 1940 production to. taled 412,560,000 pounds of new-aluminum valued at .75,292,210 compared with 325,090,000 pound! valued at $64,600,000 the year before. To meet national defense re. quirementa, officials added, aluminum production Is expected to ex. ceed 690,000,000 pounds by July, 1941, and 825,000,000 pounds by July, 1942. Contrary to the trend of many other materials greatly in demand, for the rearmament program, the price of aluminum declined 3 cent! . during 1940 from 20 cents a pound to 17 cents. Officials attributed the 1940 do' mand for aluminum chiefly to th high rate of activity In national defense industries, particularly air; plane construction. Earnings Ward Baking Co. and subsidiary reported for 52 weeks ended Dec, 28 net loss of 146,745 after Federal Income taxes and special write-offs, compared with net profit of $203,972, equal to 0 cents a share on 7 per cent preferred stock, In the preceding year. Dividend accumulations on the 7 per cent issue totaled $38 a share, as of Dec. 28. Shell Union Oil Corp., In t preliminary report placed net earnings for 1940 at approximately $15,600,000, equal to $1.05 a share on common stock after preferred dividend requirements. This compared with $11,805,713, or 76 centl a common share, in 1939. B. F. Goodrich Co. reported 1940 consolidated net profit of $6,104,-993 after provision for Federal income and other taxes, equal, after preferred dividend requirements, t $3.10 a common share, compared with $6,628,746. or $3.50 a share on common, in 1939. Federal income taxes totaled $2,215,000, an increase of $1,015,000 over 1939, the company said. Howe Sound Co. earned net Income in 1940 of $1,724,269, including its interest in subsidiary companies and after provision for Federal and foreign income and excess profits taxes but before depletion. This equaled $3.63 a share and compared with $2,491,408 or $5.25 a share In 1939. Bigelow-Sanford Carpet reported 1940 net profit of $2,075,243 after excess profits taxes, equal after per cent preferred d 1 v 1 d e n d requirements to $611 a common share, compared with $2,180,344 or $6.44 a share in 1939. Wayne Pump Co. and domesU subsidiaries in 1940 earned $922,-514, after all charges, equal to $3.18 a share.
