"I can't comment at the present time," he said, hut another harness official declared: "We'll get them out if we have to put them on vans ourselves." RACING COMMISSIONER Leo Shirley was taken aback by the sudden turn of events. "I've been hopeful that the state mediator would be able to make some headway toward settling this," he said. "If it isn't settled soon, then I'd consider ordering Hazel Park to let in these horsemen from the DRC." Hazel Park officials were unavailable for comment. Previously track vice-president Bernard Hartman had passed off the fruitless bargaining sessions and forthcoming strike vote as "just the sort of thing that happens whenever you're trying to negotiate any labor conract." 10-x-Miss Pompellt 1 t-x-Rillorelle 12-Percy's Plight 116 BY AL COFFMAN Free Press Ricinj Wrltr The dispute which threatens the opening of the Hazel Park thoroughbred meet on Monday, July 22, may bring all parimu-tuel horse racing in Detroit to a halt. With negotiations stalemated between Local 79 of the Service Employes International Union, representing track employes, and the Haz.el Park Racing Association, horsemen got into the act Friday. Scores of owners and trainers, now racing their stables at the Detroit Race Course, may refuse to move their horses from the barns in time to allow the Wolverine Raceway Harness meet to open at the DRC on Wednesday, July 24. AN OFFICIAL of the Michigan Division of the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association said that president Don Harness would hold a press conference on the situation Tuesday afternoon unless Hazel Park and the union reach a settlement by then. The likelihood of such a settlement appeared remote after a meeting Friday in the offices of state mediator Lawrence Bennett.

"I met with officials of the track and their attorney," said Local 79 business agent Jack Foran, "and they didn't present the last offer which we expected. They Indicated they would wait until early next week, possibly Monday at the DRC. "So the only thing that was accomplished today is that tjhe Michigan Employment Relations Commission set a strike election for a week from Saturday. It will be held between 10 and 11 a.m. in the DRC clubhouse." Foran, a horse owner and trainer, added that he, too, was upset by the refusal of Hazel Park to allow horsemen at the DRC to move their horses into the east side track.

"I understand they're letting in only horses from out of town. A couple of new outfits came in from Omaha today and there'll probably be more when that track closes Saturday. Meanwhile, we all have to sit here and wait." BUT IT WAS several other horsemen who indicated that they would refuse to vacate their stalls at the DRC. "Our trucks and vans just might develop mechanical trouble," said one Michigan owner. Even without such complications, DRC officials would have only three days to clean out the barns and make room for the arrival of harness horses from Northville Downs, Windsor Raceway and other tracks.

If the thoroughbred horsemen stay put, Wolverine would be hard pressed to get its 82-night meet under way as scheduled. It might be able to put together a program with "ship-ins," or it might try to evict 1,000 or more thoroughbreds by force. Sl- THIRD Purse claiming 4-year-olds ond BY AL COFFMAN rn Press Racing Writer The match race between older sprinters Roman Bolero and Kilfoil is off, at the Detroit Race Course, so the Michigan Mile track will turn to the three-year-olds Saturday for its feature attraction. With only one week to go at the 90-day summer meet, the three-year-olds will try to settle the sprint championship in the $7,500 Livonian Handicap. Nine of them have been entered in the six-furlong event, but it shapes up as strictly a two-horse battle between Abe's Choice and Strate Sherry.

Abe's Choice, owned by Abe Rahaim Jr. and J. J. Rahalm, has beaten Strate Sherry twice since losing his 1974 debut tflf Roman Bolero six weeks ago. Strate Sherry came back from those defeats to run the second fastest six furlongs of the season here last Tuesday.

AT THE HARNESS TRACKS, small fields will be the order for the weekend features. Only five older pacers will go to the post at.Northvilla Dowtjs in the $5,500 Novi Invitational, with Hasty Ed returning from Saratoga to take on local stars Easy Irv and Michigan Mack. Windsor Raceway continues with the third and final the Imperial Pacing Series. Dueling it out for the $15,000 purse will be Keystone Ponder, a recent arrival from Toronto who surprised heavily favored Rob Ron Ritzer last Sautrday night.
