Newhart wasn't happy about the format of the show and felt he didn't have enough to do. He'll be seen on Friday's show and also the one on Dec. 25 in sketches already taped.

Newhart wanted to spend more time in California with his family and do more nightclub work. He had to commute to New York for the TV show. "The Entertainers" is one of the many CBS shows which will be moved come January. It will go into the p.m. spot vacated by the cancelled "Mr.

Broadway" on Jan. 2. Taking over for it at 8:30 p.m. on Friday will be "Pass-word," followed by the "Baileys of Balboa." Thomas is under contract to NBC this season for four special shows two of them to be seen on Sundays. He said he didn't think it would be fair to NBC to be appearing on two networks at the same time. As owner and producer of four series on CBS, three of them hits, Danny's word is heard at CBS. (Comer Pyle, Andy Griffith, Dick Van Dyke and Joey Bishop are the Thomas-owned series.) Both Thomas and CBS said there was "no friction" in their relations as a result of the protest. CBS then took another look around and found the Astaire shows (Astaire had received the rights to them after their first time around and one repeat.) The three, plus an hour of London's Royal Ballet and another unnamed show will fill in at 9 p.m.

Sunday until the dramatic series, "For the People" is ready to start Jan. 24. NOT TO BE OUTDONE In all the show switching, NBC has come up with another change. "The Famous Adventures of Mr. Magoo" and "Kentucky Jones" will exchange their Saturday 8 and 8:30 p.m.

NBC's high show on the rat ings, But what reruns Three of them will be Fred Astaire specials which are among the most popular and honored shows in TV history. The three shows were seen on NBC and were Astaire's first big TV splashes. Since then, he's leen host and occasional a-ctor on an ABC-TV drama series.

Last season, he did a bit of dancing on "Bob Hope Theater." The show was a comedy with music and he played the head of a record company. (There has been talk of selling the idea as a series minus Astaire.) The Astaire shows are all in color in fact, the four shows announced for the Sun-. day series are in color. And they amount to the first concentrated colorcasting attempt by CBS. Sunday's show at 9 p.m.

will be "An Evening with Fred Astaire," first seen on Oct. 5, 1958. Barrie Chase did her first turn as Astaire's dancing partner on the program. Jonah Jones and his musical group were featured. This is the show that won nine Emmy awards Including the "Best Single Performance by an Actor," an honor that proved an eninarressment to Astaire.

The next season variety sh.iw performers were put into a separate category from the actors. Astaire turned up in the new division in the 1959-1960 nominations for his second show, "Another Evening with Fred Astaire," seen Nov. 9, 1959. He lost out to Harry Belafonte and his show was beaten by "The Fabulous Fifties" for best for variety show. Barrie Chase and Jonah Jones again co-starred with him in that show.

Astaire came back with his third show, "Astaire Time," Sept. 28, 1960. He and that show won two of the three Emmys for which they were nominated. Miss Chase and Count Basie were his co-stars. CBS will show the second and third Astaire shows on 3 and 10.
