Michigan State took too long to get started here Saturday afternoon. The result: North Carolina topped the Spartans, 21-15. 4 3-Run 9th Subdues Leaders PHILADELPHIA The Philadelphia Phillies blew another one Saturday. This tiyie they had a four-run lead, but wound up bowing to Milwaukee, 6-4, and as a result saw their hold on first-place in the National League reduced to a mere half game over the Cincinnati Royals, who trimmed New York, 6-1. It was the Phillies' ninth Straight loss.

Philadelphia jumped off to a 4-0 lead, but Milwaukee cut the differential to one run. Then in the ninth, the roof fell in. Singles by Hank Aaron and Ed Matthews started matters for Milwaukee. Frank Boiling shot a hot one up the middle, and all hands were safe when Tony Taylor dropped the throw at second. Rico Carty cleared the bases with a triple.

On the next play, Jose DeLa-Hose hit a fly to left. The umpires ruled the ball wasn't caught then reversed themselves and a 15-minute rhubarb followed. Ward Blasingdale was the winning pitcher, Bobby Shantz the loser. Reds Wallop New York, 6-1 NEW YORK The streaking Cincinnati Reds made it seven straight and ten in their last 11 by trimming the New York Mets, 6-1, Saturday to move within a half-game of first place. Marty Keough and John Edwards led the Reds' assault.

Keough drove in three runs with a double and single. Ed iff i I A X'ZA For three quarters and a few seconds in the fourth, it was strictly a North Carolina show. The Spartans could do very little.
