Though beaten last week, U-D is favored over Toledo. While the Titans were losing, 13-6, at Kentucky, the visiting Rockets were absorbing a worse defeat from a less touted Villanova team. Along with this, U-D emerged from the Kentucky clash without injuries and will even regain a missing By BOB LATSHAW Has the Detroit Lions' defensive unit started to slip? That's one of the most often asked questions around town these days, although the Lions are perched atop the Western Division standings in the National Football League. Perhaps some of the defensive platoon has slowed down a step.

But coach George Wilson doesn't have to worry about one phase of his defensive team. The Lions have three of the most promising young players in pro football. They play the key roles of linebackers, perhaps the most demanding and coaches feel today that they haven't hurt the defense by inserting Gaubatz into the lineup. Ernie Clark is a former Michigan State defensive end who never quite made it as an All America, but more than surprised the coaches with his play last at linebacker when Carl Brett-schneider was sidelined. Like Gaubatz, Clark is a deadly tackier, has good speed and a real desire to play.

LOUIS Two straight exhibition defeats haven't caused coach Charley Wolf of the Detroit Pistons to fine anyone or utter a nasty word. As the Pistons relaxed Thursday following losses on successive nights to the St. Louis Hawks, whom the De-troiters will meet again Saturday night in Centralia, 111., Wolf did some explain- ing: "I don't want to sound like I'm alibing and I'm not.

The Hawks are a veteran team and their players have worked with each other for several seasons. "Now take our club. We're pretty much a new bunch. The fellows are strange to one another and will be for awhile. "In addition, I wanted to see what some of our rookies could do in the early games.

If you're going to be fair to these kids, you have to give them a good chance." 2 ROOKIES CUT That's exactly what Wolf did as far as forward Jim Davis from Colorado and It' Ralph Telken from nearby Rockhurst College were con-- cerned. Michigan's quickest runner is Carl Ward, a sophomore halfback from Cincinnati. He will be in the starting lineup as the Wolverines open the season Saturday at home against Air Force. I la important spots in the first line of defense. In case you haven't guessed already, they are Dennis Gau-batz, Ernie Clark and Monte Lee.

A TOUGH SPOT Gaubatz has probably had the most attention because he took over from Joe Schmidt, the league's No. 1 linebacker, last year when Joe suffered an injury. Gaubatz has speed, is a fine tackier and can cover pass receivers, despite his 220 pounds. While he was on the spot as Schmidt's replacement, Gaubatz apparently didn't let the pressure get to him. He turned in a top performance in his rookie season.

MSU Opens At Jolted N. Carolina CHAPEL HILL, N. C. Michigan State opens the foot ball season Saturday against North Carolina looking for a repeat of last fall's first-day win over the Tar Heels. This was supposed to be Carolina's test for national ranking, but North Carolian State removed some of the edge with a 14-13 upset last week.

The Spartans go into the game searching for running backs to go with quarterback Steve Juday. Favored over North Carolina, the Spartans return home next week agaist Southern California. Tartan Harriers To Open Season Frank McBride hopes his Wayne State harriers will return to championship form Saturday, when they open against Central Michigan at the River Rouge Course at 11 a.m. Last year the Tartars compiled a 7-3 overall mark and finished second in the Presidents' Athletic Conference tourney. Before that, they had gone undefeated in four consecutive conference championships.

Under McBride's mentorship they have never lost a dual meet. But as the Wolverines approach the first of those million things to be considered Air Force in Ann Arbor in the season opener the talk is there despite all the caution the U-M coach can muster MICHIGAN FAVORED Michigan goes into the 1:30 p.m. kickoff Saturday favored though the Falcons have a victory already behind them. And the team they beat by the baseball score of 3-2 was Washington, a Rose Bowl entry last season and rated one of the best in the West this fall.

In a rain-spattered game, Air Force got a field goal and held on, three times stopping Washington inside the 25. The last time, the Huskies had a first down on the six and couldn't make it. Air Foxce intentionally took a safety and then kicked cut of danger with a minute remaining. This defense is one of the strengths of the Falcon team made over from the club that was 7-3 last year before losing to North Carolina in the Gator Bowl. And the key to the defense is as re-made as anybody He is Larry Toilstam, a 20C-pounder from Lansing who was the Falcons' leading rusher as a sophmore fullback, lost his first-string status last year, and made himself into a linebacker in practice this spring.

HERO FROM LANSING He got onto the No. 1 defensive unit only the Wednesday belore the trip to Washington, made 13 unassisted tackles, helped in 10 others, recovered a fumble, and was named Associated Press lineman of the week. The Detroit neighborhood contributes two more starters on the Falcons' two first-; string platoons. Catholic Central's Dick Czarnota is a co-captain, the aefensiye right haltback, and rated the best blocker among the backs, the team's best pass receiver, and maybe the Falcons' best back. Defensive end Joe O'Gor-man, a 214 pounder from Dearborn, was another Air Force standout at Wasnington.

But the Falcons also play oliense, and the word rrom their advance man is that "we have the most outstanding crop of pass receivers that anybody has." The main problem this year throw to this crop, and Tim Murphy has emerged as the man as a senior after playing only four minutes last season. ATTACK REVAMPED With Murphy, the offense is revamped and more balanced, for Terry Isaacson, the departed quarterback, dominated the attack as much as he did Murphy. Air Force built the offense aiound Isaacson with option Play3 and shotgun formations, om running and 946 throwing. All three figures are Falcon records. Now the attack figures to attack Michigan on balance.

The Wolverines, more than anything, are just ready to play a football game. "It has been five weeks practicing and we really don't know where we are," says Elliott. "We're anxious to see." Along with seeing the Wolverines, the 70,000 customers expected in Saturday's pre dicted sunshine, will enjoy the Band Day show that will set some l.uuu nign scnooi bandsmen to tooting on the field at halftime. Dressen proclaimed that he had fined four of his players a total of $1,000 way back in August, a rare move for a manager since assessments usually are a club secret. Pitchers Hank Aguirre, Ed Rakow and Larry Sherry and first baseman Norm Cash were socked $200 apiece for violating curfew in Los Angeles. Then, on a stop in Kansas City, Dressen heard that Aguirre was out late, waited up in the pitcher's hotel room, and greeted him with another $200 fine. The manager and the pitcher had some hot words, and Aguirre said, among- other things, that he wanted to be traded. K.

St. Louis, hot on Philadelphia's heels, too, swept a double header from Pittsburgh, 4-2 and 4-0, to move 3V2 games behind the slumping leaders. The Phillies sent Jim Bun-ning, their number one pitcher, to the mound looking for his 19th victory, but all he got was his sixth loss.

Joe Torre drove in three runs with a pair of triples to lead the Braves, and Wade Blasingame recorded the victory with help from reliever Chi Chi Oliva after the Phils rallied for three runs in the eighth. Bob Gibson struck out 11 in posting his 17th win against 11 losses for St. Louis in the first game with Curt Flood chipping in with four hits to pace the beating of the Pirate. In the second game, Ray Sadecki notched his 19th triumph in 21 decisions with a five hitter as Lou Brock and Mike Shannon each homered for St. Louis.

Chicago scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and whipped Los Angeles, 4-3. Three walks, an error and Ron Santo's sacrifice fly engineered the Cub rally. Tommy Davis and Wes Parker accounted for all Dodger runs with a homer apiece. WSU Official Presides at Talk Dr. Randall M.
