He completed nine of 14 passes for 133 yards while he was in the game. The right side of the Lions' offensive line was particularly effective against the Giants with Tommy Watkins reeling off several impressive gains. However, only against comparatively weak Washington and in spots against the Giants have the Lions shown any real big league blocking. Wilson sent his charges through a drill Monday, despite the holiday.

The team has only two more practice sessions before leaving for the coast and the opener against the San Francisco 49ers next Saturday. The club will workout Tuesday and Wednesday at Cranbrook and then have light drills in San Francisco. The ex-Tiger farmhand certified Ivory's bid for the title by shooting a single to center with one out in he final inning, moving to second on Freddie n's sacrifice, third on a wild pitch where I he perched defiantly awaiting Ginste lethal punch. Against the Giants, Plum guided the Lions to a TD the first time they had the ball. It took five plays to move 55 yards with Watkins eating up 20 of those aided by some good blocking.

He pitched two passes, one to Jim Gibbons for 13 yards and then another to Gail Cogdill for 24 and a TD. 80-YARD DRIVE In the second quarter, Plum engineered an 80-yard touchdown drive in 13 plays with Watkins going the final two. Fortunately, the officials detected a foul on the part of the Giants during the drive that saved Tlum having a pass intercepted and returned for a touchdown. The Giants had Scored on a two-yard touchdown pass from Tittle to Aaron Thomas after the Fearsome Foursome had stopped three straight plays from the two. In the second quarter Don Chandler kicked a 45-yard field goal for the final New York points.

Gaubetz intercepted a pass by Wood and returned 30 yards to the Giants' 39, from where Morrall needed three plays to post a TD, throwing a 36-yarder to Gibbons. When another drive faltered on the Giant eight, Wayne Walker came on to kick a 16-yard field goal. He also booted three extra points. Detroit sandlot baseball is fast approaching that saturation stage. John F. Ivory rang up Detroit's fourth national championship in two weeks and second in one day by outlasting Cincinnati, 11-10, at Butzel Field Saturday night. The win, Ivory's seventh in a row, climaxed a Cinderella season and gave the vic tors the National Amateur Baseball Federation senior title for the second time in three years. Just hours before, Kowalski Sausaee tucked away national title number three in Dayton, Ohio, by crushing Akron, 11-1, for the Class crown, the NABF's 16-year-old and under division.

FAVRO AND ADRAY Two weeks ago the city claimed national titles No. 1 and 2 when Favro racked up Federation honors at Dayton and Adray Appliance salted away the All American Association championship at Johnstown, Pa. Edison Tost came within a whisker of giving Detroit another championship trophy when it was eliminated in the semifinal round of the American Legion national tournament at Little Rock. Arkansas after three weeks of tourney play. Looking back.

Ivory's toughest feat of the season wasn't actually winning. It Posts Open On Wayne Grid Team "All positions are still open" according to coach Stan Marshall as he sent his Wayne State football charges through their first scrimmage Saturday. Marshall, a new arrival from South Dakota State, was impressed with the running of halfback Haywood Sharp-ley and fullback Dempsey Harrison, who replaced- first stringer John Gutowski, sidelined with a bad knee. Sophomore Greg Gargulin-ski (6-5, 230 pounds) and Allen Poppenhager (6-1, 215 pounds) also caught the coach's eye and may help to solve the team's depth problem at tackle. All-in-all, Marshall praised the performances of his players who resume their two-a-day sessions at Tartar Field Tuesday.

Wayne State opens its season Sept. 26 at JjIsVtow good are the 1964 Even' after five exhibition games there is no assurance that they will be better than the mediocre club of 1963. There have been flashes of hope, but also many moments of despair. Saturday the Lions finished up their exhibition season with a 24-10 victory over the New York Giants, the defending Eastern Division champions. However, they had to face Y.

A. Tittle, the Giants' No. 1 quarterback, for, only the first quarter. The Lions' pass defense, which was riddled by Cleveland's Frank Ryan the week before, seemed a little stronger. Yale Lary, Dennis Gaubetz, Wayne Rasmussen and Joe Schmidt all intercepted passes but they were all against rookie quarterback Gary Wood.

PASS DEFENSE WOES Defense against running seems to be the least of the Lions' worries. But coach George Wilson must stay awake nights wondering about the pass defense. In addition to Ryan, who pitched the Browns to a 35-14 victory, Johnny Unitas seemed to have little trouble solving the Detroit defense. He quickly ran up a 21-7 lead before giving way to a rookie sub and tne Jbions eked out a 28-28 tie. The Lions' offense has been spotty.

Milt Plum has been the most consistent of the quarterbacks, including his performance against the Tigers Top Senators 3rd Time WASHINGTON Don Dem- eter's big bat made things easy for Hank Aguirre Sunday as the Detroit Tigers completed their three-game sweep over the Washington Senators, 9 to 3. It marked the tenth time in 13 games that the Tigers had triumphed on their current road trip and it also brought to 24-11 the Detroit record since the first of August. The Tigers jumped in front of Frank Kreutzer in the first inning when Gates Brown was safe on an error, advanced to second on an infield out and scored on Demeter's single to center. Then Norm Cash doubled to right and Demeter hustled all the way home when the Washington right fielder fumbled the ball. ESCAPES TROUBLE Washington jammed the bases in its half of the first but Hank Aguirre worked out of the trouble.

With one out Johnny Kennedy was hit by a pitch. He streaked to third on Chuck Hinton's single. Then Don Lock walked to load the sacks, but Aguirre disposed of Roy Sievers on a foul to Cash and Don Zimmer on a pop to Jerry Lumpe. The Senators, who had gone through 38 innings without scoring and tied a major league record by being shut out in four straight games finally broke through in the second on a walk to Don Lep-pert, a sacrifice, an infield hit by Chuck Cottier and a bloop single to center by Kennedy. With two out in the third, Bill Freehan walked, Demeter doubled and Cash singled to make it 4-1 for Detroit.

In the fourth George Thomas socked his 12th homer into the left-field seats. BATTER EX-TITAN The Tigers added to their margin in the fifth against Pete Craig, a former University of Detroit star making his major league debut. Lumpe walked, Freehan singled and Demeter cracked a long homer for his fifth RBI of the game. Aguirre lined out his third hit of the season to start the sixth! When Brown singled, Al Koch perlaced Craig. After- Lumpe walked, Freehan forced him at second, Aguirre scoring.

In fact, Ivory needed a closing surge of six straight wins to cinch a -league playoff berth and then dropped its opening playoff game to Jefferson Chevrolet before rolling to three consecutive elimination wins and the city title. Ivory's season troubles continued to plague Bruny even in the tournament. Second baseman Dave Gottschalk only saw limited service because of a bad leg. Pitcher Ed Frazier barely made the quarterfinal game, which he won, because of a work conflict.

Third baseman Jerry Johnston was driving to the state of Wyoming for another more pressing engagement when the championship tilt got under way. And the team lost cen-terfielder Marv Raab for the night when he suffered a groin injury diving into sec-ond base on a steal in the third inning. I One could hardly blame the team's great jubilation when Wayne Ginste's two-out single drove Dick Sheldon home from third base in the bottom the ninth inning with the climatic run of a wild and woolly contest. LONG BATTLE The game took seconds short of four hours to play, but the player procession to give Gin-ste a glad hand probably set some sort of a sprint record. The Vikings alone wound up the pre-season campaign unbeaten five straight victories. In their windup Saturday night, the Vikings won a thriller from Philadelphia, 21-20 when Frank Tarkenton passed four yards to Bill Brown for a touchdown witih 11 seconds to go to tie the score. Fred Cox then booted the winning' point.

Tarkenton had spent most of the game in the bench as Minnesota Coach Norm Van Mrocklin used Ron Vander-Kelen for three quarters. The youngster passed for two touchdowns. King Hill passed 41 yards to Pete Retzlaff and Israel Ram ran 15 yards for the Eagles touchdowns. BROWN SCORES 2 Jim Brown scored twice and Lou Groza booted a pair of field goals to give Clevland a 20-17 win over Green Bay in the second half of Saturday's big doubleheader in Cleveland. The Packers rallied in the fourth period on touchdowns by Tom Moore and Elijah Pitts. The defending champion Chicago Bears won easily over Dallas, 21-6, by scoring twice in the final period at New Orleans. Bill Wade passed 21 yards to Johnny Morris for the Bears' first TD, then Bill Martin scored ona 30-yarder from Rudy Bukich. Dave Whitsell blocked a field goal attempt and ran 56 yards for the final Bears' score.
