OCT 10. 1978 Brother Rice, keep your eye on Loy Norrix Hal Schram's top 10 prep football team; Rookie's arm makes CFL history CALGARY, Alberta (AP) Harold Randolph is young, virtually unknown linebacker with the Toronto Argonauts, but Saturday he did his bit for a piece of Canadian Football League history. Randolph was at the Toronto bench in the first quarter when Calgary defensive back Ray Odums intercepted a pass in the end zone and appeared headed for a touchdown as he raced down the sideline. But he got only as far as the Calgary 52-yard line.

It was there that Randolph, standing on the sidelines, stuck out his arm and clotheslined Odums. By HAL SCHRAM frt Prm Joofti Anter Last year, it was Portage Central High which came out of southwestern Michigan to challenge Birmingham Brother Rice in the state Class A football playoff finals at the Silverdome. This year, the likely challenger appears to be Kalamazoo Loy Norrix High which has won its first five games, owns one the top ratings in the state, and has the momentum so important to a big winner. "We just hope we get the chance to play for the state title," admits each Don Blanchard. "We're like everyone else, that's one of our top goals." Blanchard, 35, left a track coaching job at Ann Arbor Pioneer five years ago to attempt to build a program at Loy Norrix, a school which had enjoyed only two winning seasons in 13 years prior to his arrival.

Last year, they finished second to Portage Central in the Big 8' Conference and Portage Central went on to lose in the state finals to Brother Rice, 17-7. "I just happened to come at the right time." Blanchard said. "There was only one way to go here.

We had quite a time getting the program on its feet, but we feel we are now making steady progress. We're starting to build a winning tradition in the junior highs and that's where you have to start." THE KNIGHTS COVET their high state rating. "The ratings are a great conversation piece for the kids," Blanchard says. "I hear about them ever Tuesday morning. They read them and love them.

"I don't know how it's possible to rate them in order but it's a big satisfaction to us to be known as a solid contender." Blanchard said the next two weeks probably hold the key to an unbeaten regular season. "We've got to meet and beat Portage Central and Niles in our next two games. Portage Central had some problems early in the season but is coming on strong. Niles is 4-1 and ready to take over in the conference if they can knock us off." he said. Loy Norrix is a small school by Class A standards with some 1.500 students, but Blanchard has some quality players with good size.

"We don't have any monsters but we're a solid 6-foot-2 or 6-foot-3 along our front line," Blanchard said. The coach said he has half a dozen players who should be recruited by the college scouts and he is doing something about it. In addition to his coaching duties and his five math classes each day, he finds time to prepare a fact and personnel sheet on his players for the college recruiters. "Any All-State selector has got to consider people like Tom Glendening, Dave Bird, Darryl Duncan, Matt Milks and John Deschaine for instance," says Blanchard. "Glendening is a fine power running back with 4.8 second speed in the 40-yard dahs and doubles for us as a linebacker.

He's also a 3.6 average student." Blanchard said Loy Norrix has excellent team speed and that the defense is getting better. "We have the quality people at the key positions." The Knights of Kalamazoo Loy Norrix may not win it all this fall, but thpy're sure ready to give it a try.
