It took 2:56 of the first round, and ringsiders said they counted a hundred blows. Thoughts of Louis get Buddy going against the boxing commissions. He says that rays showed Max had broken hands when the New York commission forced him Into the fight that saw Jim Brad-dock lift his championship. Buddy says he was forced to fight the second Louis fight his last with a neck ffljury that left his left arm useless. As for the commissions of today, he begins with New York "who'd Jim Farley ever lick except a stamp when his father was postmaster general" and goes on from there.

This will give you the same feeling1 you will hae behind a boat. "Repeat the exercise until you master coming up in a smooth gentle motion.

"Then wade out In the water with the skis on until it is about waist deep. Crouch down on the rear of your skis as you did on shore. Your skis will rise up, but keep them together. "When you are balanced, give the tow boat operator the go ahead and rise up smoothly and slowly as you did on shore. Keep your knees flexed slightly to cushion the waves, keep your arms straight and lean back, "Don't overdo it the first time.

Water skiing will tax muscles you didn't know you had. Let the driver know you want to stop and he'll head in toward shore. "You simply let go of the rope and coast to a stop. Recover the skis and wait for the boat or wade ashore. BY BOB PELLE It has been 27 years since Max Baer was heavyweight champion of the world, 20 winters since brother Buddy tried to take the same title away from Joe Louis.

Now Max is dead almost three years of a heart attack, and Buddy, the survivor of a coronary of his own, is out raising funds for heart research. Buddy rumbles from his 290-pound frame for the Max Baer Heart Fund and the "happy days when we lick this killer." On his 17-state tour for the Eagle lodges he also tilts against boxing commissions. But as with most old warriors, the memories of battles past are the battles that were best. THE A It rollicked along, and if they sometimes did better outside the ring than within the ropes, nobody cared. They appeared in the movies and night clubs.

Buddy once sang at the Elmwood Casino, and they had their laughts. There was fun to be pursued, and when Buddy talks of Max he never neglects to throw In the pun that "there was a lot of wolf in that Baer. "He left joking." says Buddy. "When he had his heart attack in that hotel, he called the switchboard, and the girl said she'd send up the house doctor right away. "And he told her I don't want your' house doctor, I want a people THERE ARE even laughs of Joe Louis, who demolished the two brothers three times between them.

The win moved the Yankees to within one game of the idle first-place Cleveland Indians and was their second in the three-game series with the Twins. Maris and Mantle, the home run twins of 1961, both con nected off lefthander Jack Kralick in the fourth inning. Bill Stafford, who received credit for his seventh victory, shut out the Twins tor seven innings, but suddenly came apart in the eighth when singles by George Banks and Harmon Killebrew, Vic Power's double and two walks produced two runs and filled the bases.

Bridges, however, struck out Mincher on a 3-2 pitch to end the threat. Mike Was By JOE DOWDALL Redundant or not, it Is hard to contest the claim of water skiers that theirs is the fastest-growing sport in the country's fastest growing port, boating. Three years ago, there were 50,000 water skiers in Michigan.

Today the band of water bugs cavorting on the nd of a line claim there are 200,000 skiers on Michigan's waters. The best of our state skiers will be competing this weekend against other state and Canadian champions in the International Water Ski Tournament at Oxford Lake. SEVERAL NATIONAL champions will be in the field which will seek an international title in the slalom, jumping and trick categories for the senior men's, men's, boys and women's divisions. Michigan will be led by Jonathon Staryk, the national junior slalom champion, Lynn Vermulen, the national boys slalom champion, and Paul Boel, a five-time state and midwest champion who won the Masters jump tournament last week in Georgia. Boel, a 40-year old cheese Importer, has been skiing only eight years.

He became Interested in the sport with his family at their cottage near Farmington. He holds the state senior men's titles for both slalom and jumping. Boel figures he will have to jump more than 120 feet Sunday to beat off the challenges of the expert field. "The slalom "will be even tougher," Boel said. "You can bet the five finalists to reach the championship round Sunday will be able to cut through the slalom gates at the maximum 36 mph.

"THEN THEY will shorten the 75-foot tow line six feet at a time while keeping the boat speed at 36. The skier's speed will build up to 60 or 70 miles an hour as he cracks in and out of the shoots." Slalom and jumping competition is only for the experts. But Boel believes anyone can enjoy water skiing with one afternoon's practice. The Phillies worked loser Juan Marichal (11-5) and Don Larsen over for four home runs among 10 hits.

Demeter hit a bases-empty shot in the second inning, then cracked a 2-2 tie in the seventh with his second homer. Other homers for Philadel phia were hit by Bob Wine and Clay Dalrymple. We all admired Mickey." NONE OF THEM was able to watch Cochrane and the Tigers in the World Series when they lost to the Cardinals in '34 and then beat the Cubs the next year to bring Detroit its first world's baseball championship. "They charged quite a bit for those Series tickets," Taylor remembered. "We didn't have that kind of dough up here." To them, just as to all oldtimers whose memories of the mid-thirties htill are fresh, Cochrane not only was the greatest catcher the Tigers ever had, but their greatest manager. Big, gruff and talented, he still stands as a symbol of Detroit's finest baseball heroes. Where Ty Cobb was a loner, Cochrane was a Cobb was the individualist whose personal baseball achievements still make the record book bulge.

Cochrane was the team man. He was the leader who knew his men and tried to handle them to squeeze out the last bit of heroics. Cobb was the perfectionist who failed as a manager because he couldn't see why his players were unable to reach his own personal heights. Cochrane was the opposite. He wanted perfection.

But he knew that the only way to come close to it in his players was to be one of them. He set them an example, Cobb drove them. Now they're both gone. And way up here in Michigan's vaca-tionland, the oldtimers paused to reminisce about Iron Mike. "He was a helluva guy," they said.

Buddy Baer gets are always of Louis. When they ask "how big was he compared to yDU?" Buddy was 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds in fig-hting' days the reply is ready. Buddy holds a hand under his chin and says "he came up to here and too often." Buddy is best remembered, of course, for the night in 1941 when he knocked Louis out of the ring in the first round before he finally g-ot hammered down himself and didn't answer the bell for the seventh.
