SCRATCHED Tretnta Trat, Delta Oaef. By JIM HAWKINS fm Prtu Soort Writer CLEVELAND Nothing brings out the best In Dave Rozema like the sight of the Cleveland Indians on the other side of the field. And the Tigers' troubled righthander has never looked better than he did Friday night as he shut out his good friends, the Indians, on four singles for a brilliant, morale-boosting 1-0 victory. It was Rozema's second win in a row over the Indians and the fourth victory of his career without a loss against the Tribe. Furthermore, it clinched fifth place for the Tigers although they still have their sights set on a loftier goal fourth place, which is occupied by the Baltimore Orioles.

Nevertheless, the Tigers, who are a much-improved 12 games over .500, can finish no lower than fifth place In the American League East, no matter what happens in the 16 games that remain. And Rozema has a victory he can savour the rest of the season and all winter, too. FRIDAY'S triumph was the second four-hitter of Rozema'i two-year career and only his third shutout His first four-hitter, also a shutout, occurred in April of last year when he had the advantage of eight runs. And in his other shutout, over Seattle earlier this season, Dave surrendered seven hits while the Tigers scored five times. "This had to be my best game ever," exclaimed the exuberant 22-year-old righthander as he ripped off his sweat soaked uniform, piece by soggy piece.

"I mean, with only one run to work with I couldn't afford to make any bad pitches. This was the first time I've ever beaten anybody 1-0. "I get pumped up every time I go out on the mound," continued Rozema, whose record now includes eight wins and 10 losses. "I try to shut out every team I face. But it doesn't always work out that way.

Tonight, it did. "I JUST threw the ball in there and the defense did the rest," explained Rozema, who required only 83 pitches and one hour and 56 minutes to dispose of the sixth-place Indians. "I only got one strikeout and one run, but that was enough tonight "This is the greatest feeling you can have when you've had a season like I've had. I was 6-10 and now I've come up with a couple of wins and a couple of complete games in a row. It's Just great.

"It really builds up your ego. It makes you think you can still pitch up here. When you lose and lose the way I have, you start thinking. You begin wondering if you can still win. Tonight I showed I can." AT THAT point, Rozema leaped to his feet and let out a loud roar.

"Excuse me," he said sheepishly as be sat back down. "I just had to let that out" The Tigers armed Rozema with the only run he needed in the top half of the sixth Inning when Ron LeFlore singled off Cleveland starter and loser Paul Reuschel, stole second and scored on Rusty Staub's sacrifice fly. It wasn't much but thanks to the Detroit defense, It was enough. The Tigers, who lead the lead In double plays with 164, completed three big ones Friday night and Rozema did the rest Only once, in the bottom of the fourth, did an Indian runner advance as far as second base as Rozema faced Just 28 batters one more than the major league minimum for a nine-inning game. No wonder the young Tiger righthander was elated.

Lynn crashed into the cen-terfield wall pursuing a home run hit by Chris Chambliss. X-rays taken at Lenox Hill hospital showed no break and the Red Sox say Lynn's status will be determined on a day-to-day basis. Gary Hancock, a .211 hitter, replaced Lynn in Saturday's lineup.

But Sunday things get serious. The Cowboys are In Los Angeles to face the Rams in a duel between two of the eight unbeaten clubs In the National Football League. There are those who speak in awe of the Cowboys and Sunday's matchup before a national television audience (4 p.m.

on CBS, Channel 2 in the Detroit area) and a sellout crowd of more than 71,000 at the Coliseum will go a long way in determining just how good Dallas is. Are the Super Bowl champions truly a great team? This Is their first real test this year, coming against a Rams club that has done little offensively but which has been as efficient as ever on defense. Dallas leads the NFL in scoring with 72 points and second-year back Tony Dorsett has eclipsed the 100-yard mark in both games and leads the league in rushing with 258 yards. Roger Staubach has thrown for six TDs in two games. THE COWBOYS' SCORING machine goes against a defense that has allowed just 14 points the lowest figure In the NFL in two victories.

Last week Los Angeles allowed Atlanta just 73 yards total offense and sacked quarterback June Jones four times. Dallas coach Tom Landry is the first to recognize the potential of his offense, especially with the insertion of second-year man Tony Hill at wide receiver. "I think the explosiveness in our offense has to do with Tony Hill and Tony Dorsett," Landry said. "Hill is a very explosive player. He can turn a short play into a big play in a hurry because he has excellent running ability and great speed.

From the Hill-Dorsett standpoint, we're more explosive." Landry feels Hill's addition makes All-Pro Drew Pearson more effective at the other wide receiver. "The defenses we meet are going to have to respect both sides very strongly," he explained. "If that happens, then some of the pressure will come off Drew. And if there's a better quarterback than Roger in the league, I haven't seen him. I've felt Roger was the top quarterback the last two years.

He's throwing the ball well, he has command of the team. I don't think you can expect much more than that" RAY MALAVASI, unbeaten since taking over for the fired George Allen two weeks into the exhibiton season, expects to have his hands filled with the Cowboys. "I think this will be a tough, well-played game," said Malavasi. "I think we can do something offensively and I'm sure Dallas feels the same way." Dallas was a four-point favorite. Elsewhere Sunday, Buffalo is at Miami, San Diego at Denver, Oakland at Green Bay, Cleveland at Atlanta, Pitta-burgh at Cincinnati, Chicago at Detroit Seattle at the New York Jets, Washington at St.

Louis, Kansas City at the New York Giants, San Francisco at Houston, Tampa Bay at Minnesota and Philadelphia at New Orleans. Baltimore is at New England Monday night The San Diego-Denver game figures to be a close one, with both clubs coming off tough losses. Denver, which has not surrendered a touchdown yet has beaten the Chargers six straight times. Oakland tries to put its act together against unbeaten Green Bay. The Raiders needed a controversial fumble recovery TD as time elapsed to beat San Diego last week.

SURPRISING CLEVELAND goes for its third in a row against an Atlanta club that has generated little offense thus far. The Falcons have scored only 20 points in two games. Pittsburgh at Cincinnati should have been a key game but the Bengals have done little so far, dropping both games. Chicago takes its eight-game regular season winning streak to Detroit and the Jets try to put together three victories at the start of a season for only the second time in their 19-year history against winless Seattle. Miami goes for its 17th consecutive victory over Buffalo, which would tie the league record for one team against another set by Green Bay against the then Chicago Cardinals from 1937-46.

Griese's cast off, Dolphins have to wait MIAMI (UPI) All-pro quarterback Bob Griese had the cast removed from his injured left knee Saturday, but he indicated it probably will be a month before he Is ready to play for the Miami Dolphins. "It seemed to tighten up the way we had hoped it would, and now I'm going to start on a rehabilitation program. But it will be three to four weeks before I can even think about playing," be said. Coach Don Shula announced on the eve of Sunday's 4 p.m. home opener in the Orange Bowl against the Buffalo Bills that linebacker Steve Towle's injured right knee failed to respond sufficiently to treatment and he will not play.

He will be replaced by Rusty Chambers. Shula said linebacker Larry Gordon, recovering from a groin injury, and A.J. Duhe, who hasn't played since undergoing knee surgery last month, worked out in Saturday's light practice but remained on the questionable list for Sunday's contest.
