DETROIT FREE PRESS'SATUROAY. SEPT 2. 1978 5C Michigan golfer is tied ft SPRINGFIELD, 111. (UPI) Mich, and Pat Bradley each shot Friday to share the first-round Sharon Miller of Marshall. a bogey-free five-under-par 67 lead of Kite also took some lessons recently from teaching pro Bob Toski and has since won more than $26,000 in his last three starts.

"I'm hitting the ball so well that I'm really excited about playing right now." said Kite, who had missed back-to-back cuts at Phildelphia and the PGA championship. Clampelt skips into Amateur quarters PLAINFIELD, N.J. (AP) Tournament favorite Bob Clampett advanced to the quarterfinals of the 78th U.S. Amateur Golf Championships Friday with an easy 6 and 4 victory over Rod Spittle at the Plainfield Country Club. Clampett defeated Bob Jones earlier in the day in the fourth round of the tournament over the par-72, 6.865-yard course.

The 18-year-old Brigham Young University student from Carmel, breezed through the early rounds to establish himself as the man to beat. Scott Hoch, of Gary, N.C., also advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals with a 4 and 3 victory over Robert Wrenn Jr. of Richmond. Va. Hoch fell behind for the first time in the tournament when Wrenn went 1-up with a birdie on the third hole.

year-old Purtzer sought advice from famed teaching pro Jack Grout and tour millionaires Don January and Lee Trevino early in the week. Kite, who finished second in last week's Hall of Fame Golf Classic at Pinehurst, N.C.. and also was runnerup in this year's British Open, fashioned his 35-31 round Friday morning when the fairways and greens on the 6.915-yard En Joie Golf Club were still soggy from the rain that caused Thursday's scheduled round to be postponed. Purtzer birdied two of the first three holes in his round, but cooled to a one-under 34 at the turn before he eagled the 10th hole by holing out a 125-yard, 9-iron shot. He finished with birdies on three of the last four holes.

"I wanted to get off to a fast start because I had been getting into trouble early in my round for the last five or six weeks," said Purtzer, whose only tour victory was last year's Los Angeles Open. "I birdied two of the first three holes and it really helped." "The advice I got from Grout, January and Trevino really helped," Purtzer said, "they tell you not to listen to advice from other guys on tour because they don't want you to do well, but I think that's a lot of bunk. I have a lot of respect for the older, more experienced guys out here." Others at 70 were Sylvia Ferdon, Carole Joe Skala, Amy Alcott, Betsy King and JoAnne Carner. "I didn't know I had a 67 until I went into the scorer's tent," Miller said. She said she tried not to think of her score, but "just kept trucking along." Her drives were not as accurate as they have been in the past few weeks, but she "felt comfortable" with her putting.

"If I feel comfortable with the ball, then I'm going to make some birdies." Miller birdied two par-three holes on the front nine along with a birdie on the eighth hole for a 33 on the front half of the course. On the back nine, she scored birdies on the two par-five holes. The low 70 scorers on the 6.018-yard course through Saturday advance to the Sunday and Monday finals. Ptirtzer, Kile H.C. lead ENDICOTT, N.Y.

(UPI) Tom Purtzer parlayed some past advice from fellow pros into a five-under-par 66 Friday to match steady Tom Kite for the first-round lead in the rain-delayed $225,000 B.C. Open golf tournament. Hoping to find the cure for his recent erratic play, the 26- the 100.000 LPGA Rail Chanty goii Classic. Miller set the pace early in the afternoon and looked strong until Bradley, in the second-to-last threesome, came up with three birdies on the back nine to pull into a tie. Each goes into Saturday's second round ith a two-shot lead over any of the 88 other players.

The four-day tournament is scheduled to end Monday and pays the winner $15,000. Miller has not won a tournament since 1974. Bradley, of Westford. recently took the $60,000 Hoos-ier Classic in Ply mouth, Ind. I I I HUM Sharon Miller Two strokes back was Donna Caponi Young of Los Angeles, with a three-under-par 69.

"I think a great deal of it depends on how quickly our offense gets its stuff together.

It looks like the same story as it has been for a number of years the defense seems a little bit ahead at this stage," said Naumoff. But until the offense gets going, Naumoff is confident that the defense will serve the Lions well. In fact, he feels the style of 4-3 defense being played by the Lions is the most effective in the NFL. "I personally feel we're going to do real well defensively," he said. "Coach (Floyd) Peters has the defensive linemen coming off the ball like nothing I've ever seen in my 12 years in Detroit.

It causes total chaos and that's been the key to our success so far on defense." LION NOTES: Since Sunday's Lions-Packers game at the Silverdome did not sell out, it will not be televised in the Detroit area Although Green Bay quarterback David Whitehurst has shown steady improvement from a minor dislocation to his left shoulder (he throws righthanded), Packers' coach Bart Starr said he won't decide until Sunday whether Whitehurst will start against the Lions Gene Washington, the wide receiver picked up on waivers from San Francisco earlier in the week, joined the Lions Friday morning and the first matter of business was to have the Detroit doctors check his tendinitis of the achilles tendon. No decision was reached immediately on whether to immobilize the leg in a cast, but Washington who will wear No. 18, his number with the 49ers will not be in uniform Sunday. From Page 1D Another eight have played in the NFL but will be playing their first game with the Detroit Lions. Only 10 of the 24 men (including a punter and kicker) who started the final game of 1977 will be found in the lineup Clark sends out to compete with the Packers.

And several of the new players haven't even had the benefit of the entire training camp period and four preseason games to get to know each other. FORTUNATELY for Clark and the Lions, there are a few players who have been around long enough to provide the stability and leadership the team needs. Linebacker Paul Naumoff, for instance. At the age of 33, with 1 1 NFL seasons behind him, Naumoff is the elder statesman of the team. In fact, he has missed only one game in all 1 1 seasons and the game Sunday will be the 154th of his career, tying him with Joe Schmidt for sixth place in total games played for Detroit.

And the way Naumoff sees it, what the Lions need as much as anything else right now is a greater sense of camaraderie. "It's important for this team to get a feel for each other the offense and the defense," said Naumoff, as he pulled the tape from his wrists after the Friday workout. "And you can feel it's coming along now." LIKE JUST ABOUT everyone else who has seen the Lions perform in the preseason, Naumoff feels the defense may have to carry more than its share of the load while the.
