Ngfe. v- the VWvJ'X fVfx fiS as a piece of dramatic literature because of the almost overpowering artistry of its leading player, Colleen Dew-hurst. Once having seen her in "Great Day" it is going to be difficult for people to think of anybody else in the part. "Great Day" is a story of life in an Irish section of Louis, during pre-Repeal days.

It is written by Alice Cannon. It's her first play. It deals with the problem of a lovable slob of a backslidden Catholic played by Dewhurst who is trying to work her courage up to attending her niece's first Communion. It has been 18 years since she attended Church. She has been divorced twice, is at the moment living in sin a good deal of the time and doesn't think much of her state of Grace.

MOST of the events of the play occur the Saturday before the communion, and the fireworks come from upset- a WILLIAM WYLER production THE BY LOUIS COOK Free Press Staff Writer It is difficult to get started at this glorious task because happy tears are smearing the spectacles and convulsive sobs of joy keep mixing up the typewriter keys. This is not so much joy at the thought that the Theater of Michigan investors have excellent prospects of getting their money back, although that's a nice thought. It's the profound sat Cook isfaction of an evening of creative theater, the first walking-out of a wonderful new play called "Great Day in the Morning" Thursday night at the Shubert. It's rough-hewn and there are tedious moments now and then but "Great Day" ir eloquent, funny and Roving. "GREAT DAY" is difficult to assess strictly on its merits IVcw Faces qtartc Tnnnvi ting the delicate emotional balance of the woman.

She switches from good humor to rage, from tenderness to attempted strangulation, with a suddenness and vigor which is not completely the property of the Irish. There are wonderful comic moments when the home brew Is hauled out as the police hammer on the front door and when Miss Dewhurst belts out a wild ditty called "Louisville Lou." Frances Sternhagen has a fine tomboy look as Miss Dewhursfs sister. Miss Dew-hurst's pudgy boy friend, Clifton James, is an excellent comedian. Eulabelle Moore is magnificent as a pipe-smoking ice woman, peddling her ware in a baby carriage. Peggy Burke is very appealing as the girl about to receive her first communion Writer Cannon has somehow managed to write a tale of Irish life without making it offensively Irishy, which is seldom done.

Will Phoebe Flaherty receive a sign frcm Heaven that it's all right for her to go to church after sin and absence If she didn't the audience would tear the theater down. "I'm no over-night Cinder-t'la," she said.

"I've been fv-orking steadily in pictures fnd TV for six years. AH at onco I get a couple of fine breaks. That averages out at one good break every three years and anybody's entitled to expect that good an average!" Carrie is currently on loan-out from her home studio to play a featured role with Gregory reck, Robert Mitch-nni and Polly Bergen in the -Melville suspense drama for Universal, "Cape Fear," coming soon to the Fox Theater. Barrie's first really good screen role was in "Mardi Gras" with Pat Boone. Twentieth Century-Fox signed her and by the time the ink had dried Barrie was rehearsing with Fred Astaire for the TV Spectacular which set viewers and critics on their ears.

SHE WAS born Oct. 20, 1938, in New York City. Her father is Borden Chase, the author and screen writer. Her mother is an accomplished pianist known professionally as Lee Keith. The family moved to California when Barrie was six.

She hasn't been back to New York since. She grew up in a comfortable San Fernando Valley home in Encino, where there was room for a stable of good horses and a large swimming pool. Until she was well into her teens her time was divided among dancing, riding and swimming lessons. By the time she decided to concentrate on dancing she had an enviable number of trophies and ribbons for swimming, riding and showing horses.
