SHARP! National League By TOM HENDERSON Free Press Sports Writer The Pistons formally announced Monday their signing of Terry Tyler, the leaper from the University of Detroit who was their top draft choice last spring. He signed a three-year contract that is contingent upon his making the team. Tyler, the 2 1 -year old shot-blocking wizard who prepped at Detroit Northwestern, was the the 23d player taken in the NBA draft. He averaged 15 points and 10.5 rebounds in his four years with the Titans. News of the signing had leaked out last week, and so things in the Silver-dome press room were anticlimactic.

Besides, the signing had become just a formality the moment that Vitale, Tyler's coach for three years at U-D, took him near the beginning of the second round of the draft. BUT THE PROCEEDINGS weren't quiet, routine or boring not with Vitale in charge. Vitale, in his rookie year of guiding the Pistons after stepping down as athletic director at U-D, kept things interesting he had good quotes, good put-downs, and, when the media ran out of things to ask, he even supplied his own good questions. Bill Davidson, one of the team's owners, began things by introducing Tyler, who quietly thanked the media being good to me four years at the University of Vitale was always behind me 150 and the city of Detroit was a pleasure to play in my Tyler answered a rudely-phrased question about how much he will be paid if he makes the team. "It's comfortable," he said politely.

It is believed he will make $55,000 the first year, with raises each of the next two. The pay is small by NBA standards, that and the lack of a no-cut provision being two by-products of the demise of the ABA and its bidding wars with the NBA. DAVIDSON THEN introduced Vitale, saying his coach would like to say a few words. The room shook with laughter; Vitale never has had a "few" a touching story about Tyler's mother, who died a year ago. "I wish to God she could be here today," said Vitale.

I don't worry about rebounds and she used to say to me. 'I just want to know if my Terry is going to "Well, I'm here to tell you today that Terry Tyler graduated in four years I ever had a son" Vitale put his arm around Tyler's shoulders "this is the one I want right here. If I have to cut him, that will never change." SOMEONE FROM the press got a turn and asked Vitale if Tyler was going to make the team. "He's got a 50-50 shot," said Vitale, sober now. "He knows what he's up against.

We got six or seven guys that have jobs set, the way I look at it. "I'm talking about Leon Douglas. I'm talking about Bob Lanier. I'm talking about Chris Ford, Eric Money, John Shumate, M.L. Carr.

"After that, it's a war you're talking about." The Pistons have 11 spots on their final roster, and will be taking 20 players to camp. That means 13 of them, including Tyler and Long, will be fighting for the last four spots. ABOUT THE possibility of getting Bill Walton, the disenchanted center who is leaving Portland, Vitale said: "We would be interested, any basketball man would be. But we will not make a bid. He hasn't listed Detroit as one of the teams he's interested in.

"I'm a big believer in Bob Lanier the days of Lanier being the third-best center in the NBA are over," he shouted, fervent again. Selling again. "Jabbar's getting old. Walton's hurting. Lanier is in the best shape of his life.

His knee is fine, knock on wood." Suddenly, Vitale turned to Tyler. "I got a question for you, Terry. How you gonna deal with me for four more years?" It signaled an end to things, but as the lights and recorders began shutting off, Vitale leaned over to the microphone in front of him. "I just want to interject one more thing. The season tickets are rolling now in the Silver-dome.

"I'm drained and excited," he began, sounding excited and anything but drained. "I can honestly say that Terry Tyler graded out at the top in our rookie camp. People were saying, 'You took Terry because of your loyalty for him as a U-D "I have loyalty, but I also have to make my bread and butter I'm rooting for Terry and John (Long, another U-D alumnus signed by the Pistons after being drafted in the second round), sure. But if I have to cut 'em, I will. Terry knows the challenge facing him "I have no doubt he'll get used to the power-forward position, and once he learns to face the basket, he can be an asset to the Pistons," said Vitale, his voice booming out through the small room.

Tyler was a center in college, but will be playing at forward in the pros, which moves him farther from the basket and puts more of an emphasis on his shooting than his shot-blocking.) West, reached at his home in Minnesota, confirmed the grievance had been filed but refused to comment further. Monte Clark, the Lions' coach and director of football operations, agreed before the start of the season that West would be traded or put on waivers, in accordance with an agreement he worked out with club officials before Clark was hired last January. SO FAR, HOWEVER, Clark has been unable to work out a deal with another club and since he feels it is his obligation to the Lions organization to try to get a player or draft choice in exchange for West, he has not given him his release yet. Clark has said on several occasions since the start of training camp that he is continuing his efforts to make a trade. West apparently is contending he should be compensated for the income he would have received if he had reported to training camp on time, as he said he was willing to do.

He is also asking that he be released immediately to make a deal for himself as a free agent. i Bradshaw out with broken nose PITTSBURGH (UPI) Terry Bradshaw, the Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback, will miss an exhibition game against the Atlanta Falcons because of a broken nose sustained during the Steelers-Baltimore Colts game Saturday.
