Kip Young was unobtrusively beginning his professional pitching career at Lakeland.

In fact, the ink was barely dry on Young's first pro contract when Fidrych's face began appearing on the covers of some of this country's leading publications. Young was hoping he would enjoy a decent season in the American Association, pitching for Evansville.

At the moment, though, all that seems like it happened such a long, long time ago. Fidrych, of course, is finished for the year. And Young, who probably still would be toiling at Evansville if The Bird hadn't been benched again by tendinitis, has suddenly emerged as the Tigers' third annual rookie pitching prodigy. goes for his fifth win in a row and his fifth consecutive complete game when he takes the mound against the Kansas City Royals Tuesday night. Tm not trying to be like him.

I just want to be myself and pitch my own game. "I'm well pleased with my performance so far," continued the 23-year-old righthander, who signed with the Tigers out of Bowling Green University as their 23d draft pick in 1976. "I'm very pleased with the way I'm pitching. "I know this streak is going to end sometime. At least I imagine it will.

I don't expect to complete every ball game I pitch. And I know I'm going to get hit hard sooner or later. It's inevitable. No pitcher ever went through life without getting hit hard once in a while. "All I want to do is pitch my best each game," said Young.

"I want to try to have good control and good concentration. I want to keep throwing my pitches where I want to throw them. Then, whatever happens, happens. Either the batters hit the ball or I get them out. "Staying consistent, that's the key thing.

That's my goal for the rest of the year. Right now I'm throwing the ball real good and if I can continue that, I'll be satisfied. I don't want to be remembered as a guy who pitched three or four good games, then didn't pitch well the rest of the year." YOUNG WAS 1 1-3 at Evansville when the Tigers called up him late last month. Adding that to his four wins so far in a Tiger uniform gives the soft-spoken pitched a total of 15 victories for the year. And with eight or nine starts remaining, it's entirely possible Young could be a 20-game winner this year.

Given that possibility, one inevitably wonders why the Tigers didn't promote their newest phenom a lot sooner. One person who doesn't wonder, though, is Young. He's completely satisfied with the progress he has made within the Tiger organization. "I feel they've moved me up pretty fast, when you consider I just signed my first contract two years ago," said Young. "I feel I deserved to move up that fast, because I've pitched well at each level that I've been at.

But they've always been honest with me. I give Detroit a lot of credit for that. They've given me the chance to prove I could pitch everywhere I've been. "I was a little depressed earlier ijiis year when I was pitching well and I didn't get called up. But it didn't bother me that much.

I understood the situation. The main thing in my mind was that I wanted to be ready when I was called up. And I was." Furthermore, Young has the record to prove it. Kip Young a PP HOftSI 6T. COMMENT JOCKEY ltf-urs Man.

And certainly one of the most successful, too. YOUNG'S RECORD since he was summoned from Evansville a month ago, reads like a fairy tale: Four starts, four victories, four complete games. Only the loss which Young absorbed in his major league debut when he was ushered into a game in relief in the 10th inning just to give him an opportunity to get his feet wet, mars an otherwise perfect record.

And the Tiger fans have responded to Young's sudden success by demanding he take a curtain call after two of his four victories, just as they used to do whenever The Bird won in '76. However, unlike Fidrych and to a lessor extent Rozema, who gained fame by being flaky, Young is a most level-headed, down-to-earth young man. "THERE'S ONLY one Mark Fidrych," insisted Young, who Sleeper of the Day Missy Bushy(5th race) Has a worid of speed but must be hurting judging from the way she has been stopping badly From $12,500 claimers in her last at Hazel to $6,250 today is just too big a temptation for a filly that is capable of stealing one. Gimmick Bet of the Day The featured 8th race shapes up as a speed duel between Mr. Middlesex and Sir Serlari.

Mr. Middlesex won handily as much the best hislast time out and Sir Serlari lost a tough stretch duel while being ridden close at times by Never Proud. 'y IT DIDN'T work as the Tigers jumped out in front in the bottom of the second inning when Mickey Stanley sent Phil Mankowski home with a slow-rolling single to center. The Tigers added two more runs in the third when slow running Rusty Staub beat out an infield single to short with two away, then scored from first on Steve Kemp's triple off the centerfield fence. Kemp crossed the plate minutes later, thanks to a base hit by Milt May.

An inning later, they scored two more to knock Gale out of the game. RON LEFLORE started the rally with a single, then swiped second for his 23d sue-; cessful theft in a row, leaving him just three shy of the American League record of 26 straight set last season by; Mitchell Page of Oakland. Kansas City catcher Dar-rell Porter's throw to second was way wide of the mark, so LeFlore continued on to third. After Lou Whitaker walked, -Staub singled to right-center for his 96th RBI of the year, tying him with Jim Rice of Boston for the league lead! Kemp fouled out, but May singled again, knocking in an-. other run.

IN THE SEVENTH, four, Tigers crossed the plate, even though they managed only one base hit and a single at that. Alan Trammell got the: Tigers' lone base hit to begin the inning, and reliever Marty Pattin walked LeFlore. When: Brett threw away Whitaker's sacrifice bunt down the third base line, both Trammell and LeFlore raced home.
