The half-hour program to be broadcast Wednesday at 10:30 p.m. on Channel 56 presents playlets that Thornton Wilder wrote as a teenager around the time of World War years before he scored with Town" and "Skin of Our Teeth." The sketches deal with religious or moral ideas and were intended more to be read aloud in the parlor than to be staged. They are brief conversations among three characters, set in historical or mythical locales, with little action or dramatic conflict. Wilder wrote about 40, of which 16 were published in 1928.

"HE DIDN'T really know how plays are made yet, so he invented his own forms," Wilder's sister, Isabel, said in an interview. "These are his attempts as a young person of 16 to express his feelings. Some writers do it in short stories or poems, he did it in these plays." Rudi Goldman, who produced and directed the program for WHA-TV in Madison, saw in television the ideal medium for realizing Wilder's intentions. "Like many playwrights, Wilder was writing more in images than for the stage in these early works," Goldman said. "The dialogue almost demands closeups, and some of the special effects can only be achieved with modern technology." FOR INSTANCE, the last play, "And the Sea Shall Give Up Its Dead," portrays three dead souls bemoaning their inconse-quentiality as they rise toward the surface of the ocean on Judgment Day.

The underwater effect was achieved by shooting the characters through a plastic-coated material stretched across a frame. For the end of the world, Goldman filmed an explosion, then ran it in reverse and slow-motion. The result is an "implosion," the universe swallowed up in flames and vanishing. Unfortunately, the ingenuity lavished on this last play cannot overcome a basically boring premise, which manages to become long-winded in the space of five minutes. BEST IS the third play, "The Penny That Beauty Spent," a touching vignette which Miss Wilder said her brother called "a romantic valentine." Set in the Paris of Louis XV, it concerns a naive young dancer who, after catching the king's eye, is sent by him to a jeweler's shop to pick out a gift for herself.

All she wants is a watch for her consumptive husband, whom she has brought along, but the jeweler explains that she is to be the king's mistress and must pick a bauble that will please him.
