29, 1970 SPORTS PEOPLE FOR THE RECORD TIGER AVERAGES I DETROIT FREE PRESS HORSE RACING SCOREBOARD mm Barney through as Lion? Club places 11-year vet on injured waiver list Tigers insure Gibson with $200,000 policy By JIM HAWKINS Free Press Sports Writer It turns out the Tigers aren't taking such a big gamble by letting Kirk Gibson, their $200,000 bonus baby, play football for Michigan State University this fall after all. Tiger general manager Jim Campbell confirmed Monday that the team has taken out a one-year personal disability insurance policy on Gibson to protect its investment in case he is seriously injured on the football field. Campbell declined to reveal the specifics of the policy but admitted it is for "roughly the amount of bonus money we have tied up in him." Which means, if Gibson is unable to continue his pro baseball career because of a football injury, the Tigers will get their $200,000 back. "To my knowledge this is the first time we've ever done anything like this," admitted Campbell. "But then this is the first time we've ever let a guy play football after he signed with us.

"Really, policies such as this aren't that uncommon. Singers insure their voices, surgeons insure their hands, and we've insured a baseball player." Gibson, who played minor league baseball in Lakeland, this summer after signing with the Tigers, is back in East Lansing preparing for the Big Ten football season ahead. 0 A i Lem Barney's brilliant 11-year career with the Lions appeared at an end Monday when the club placed the veteran cornerback on the NFL's injured waiver list.10 days prior to his 33d birthday. Barney, a fixture at left cornerback since his rookie season of 1967, has been plagued with a groin injury and had lost the starting job to rookie Luther Bradley. Other NFL teams have 24 hours until 4 p.m.

Tuesday to claim Barney. If no one does, he will remain Lion property as a member of the injured reserve list. To be activated from that, a player must once more be subjected to waivers. "It Is with deep regret we take this action for Lem Barney has contributed so very much to the Lions football team as well as charitable' causes in the Detroit area," coach Monte Clark said in announcing the procedure. "But because of Lem's injury and the fact that we have some talented young players in our defensive backfield, I felt the move had to be made." BARNEY WAS an unknown when the Lions drafted him in the second round of the 1967 lottery out of Jackson State in Mississippi.

But the 6-foot, 190-pounder with the quick feet and outgoing personality reached immediate star status and became one of the most popular players in Lions history. Barney was named All-Pro three times in his career and has appeared in the Pro Bowl game on seven occasions. He intercepted 10 passes in his rookie season and dazzled enemy and fans alike with his stunning kick returns. Three of his rookie interceptions went for touchdowns, including one against Green Bay on the first time he ever touched the ball in a league game. Another was good for a 71-yard TD scamper.

He never again reached the interception total of his rookie year as rival quarterbacks hesitated before throwing in his area. His career total stands at 56, only six short of the club's all-time record holder Dick LeBeau. While he missed that career mark, Barney nevertheless is the Lions all-time leader in punt returns (143), punt return Please turn to Page 2D Lem Barney can be claimed Kirk Gibson Brewers pounce on Tigers, 10-1 Augustine gives up only 2 hits while his teammates erupt for 13 Brewers 10, Tigers 1 Mtwaukct Detroit abrtiM 4 2 0 LeFlore cf 3 3 13 Whitakr2b 4 2 11 Staub dh 3 111 JThmps lb 5 12 2 Kemplt 4 0 3 1 Parrish 4 0 12 Wocknfs rf 3 110 ARdrgz3b Molitor 2b Yount ss Cooper tb Hisledh Oglivie rf Bando 3b DMav If GThoms cf brhbi 4 0 11 4 0 10 4 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 4 0 0 0 10 0 0 2 10 0 2 0 0 0 27 1 2 1 Moore 5 110 Trammlss Total 35101310 Total lower deck in leftfield. The Tigers, who were rendered hitless and helpless by Augustine during the first 4 innings, finally spoiled the Milwaukee lefthander's shutout with a run in the fifth. When the Brewers stepped up to bat in the top half of the That was enough to earn Rozema his third loss in a row, though, lowering his record to an extremely disappointing 6-9 which certainly is a far cry from what was expected of him this season. Milwaukee shortstop Robin Yount got the Brewers off to a 3-0 start in the third inning when he followed a walk to Gorman Thomas and a single by Charlie Moore with a home run into the By JIM HAWKINS Free Press Sports Writer You never would have guessed the Tigers were the hottest hitting club in all of big league baseball Monday evening as they meekly settled for a couple of singles off Milwaukee's enigmatic Jerry Augustine while the Brewers bombarded their own pitchers, 10-1. Faced with yet another opportunity to squeeze into third place alongside surprising Milwaukee, the Tigers rose to the occasion with their weakest all-around effort of the season. RON LeFLORE got a hit, knocking in the Tigers only run, and Lou Whitaker somehow managed a single, too.

However, aside from four walks graciously issued by Augustine, that was the extent of the Tigers' offense. It's not that Augustine is such an outstanding pitcher. In fact, in Milwaukee where they know him best, the 25-year-old lefthander has been likened to the fabled Loch Ness monster they say he surfaces from time to time but never long enough to find out if he's for real. Which was why Monday's win, lopsided as it was, merely evened Augustine's record at 12-12 and represented only his ninth complete game in 28 starts this year. Meanwhile, the Brewers, whose ability with a bat in their hands has never been questioned, were ripping apart the Tigers" pitching staff with 13 base hits to leave town two full games ahead of fourth-place Detroit.

DAVE ROZEMA'S string of three consecutive complete games came to an abrupt halt when the Tigers' righthander departed after the first six innings, two runs down. seventh, Ralph Houk replaced Rozema with Jack Morris a decision the Tiger manager soon had good reason to regret as the Brewers sent everybody in their order up to Please turn to Page 5D Jim Campbell new Tigers president? The Tigers will hold a press conference at 1 1 a.m. Tuesday, possibly to announce the promotion of general manager Jim Campbell to club president. The Tigers refused to reveal the nature of Tuesday's announcement, other than to emphasize it "will NOT involve manager Ralph Hpuk or any other uniformed personnel." The announcement will be made by Tiger owner John Fetzer, giving rise to speculation Monday that the 77-year-old multi-millionaire may step aside as chief executive of the ballclub. And the logical choice for a replacement would be Campbell, Fetzer's right-hand man in the baseball corner of his empire.

Campbell already holds the title of executive vice-president in addition to that of general manager. JIM HAWKINS Lions9 running game deserves those jeers ONE MAN'S OPINION: Lions The boos are starting already when the Lions struggle to move the ball. They're so lucky to be opening up at home against Green Bay, which is still a pathetic excuse for a pro football team. The thing you have to wonder about is where were the Lions when Lydell Mitchell went from Baltimore to San Diego Didn't they know he was available, and why didn't they make a bid for him? They need a running game more than anything else. The Lions mumble something about the timing not being right for such a deal, but they surely could have offered as much as San Diego did Joe Washington and an undisclosed draft choice.

It has been impressive the way Monte Clark has cleaned out all the old guys. He has done it so quietly. Let's just hope the replacements are better. Tigers They still need a righthanded-hitting outfielder, but Ralph Houk shot down the idea of getting Willie Horton back and using him as the DH and putting Rusty Staub back in rightfield. I figured enough time has passed that Willie would be so glad to return to Detroit he would behave himself and give the Tigers a couple of good years.

Houk, however, doesn't think Willie can hit all that well anymore and he says Staub no longer can handle rightfield on a day-to-day basis, which is no reflection of Rusty but is probably right. I doubt the Tigers will be able to come up with a heavy hitter in the trading marts because they won't have much to offer. I think they'll put Ron LeFlore in rightfield and try for a defensive-minded centerfielder from another club or Dave Stegman from their Evansville farm club. Who picks on U-M players? Red Wings I wonder if there would be all this furor if Bill Lochead were sent to Los Angeles? Do you think there would be such a public outcry or that the lawyers would be into it? The poor guy would just go quietly because he is not that important a player. Bo My boy is saying the one thing he doesn't like about sports writers is the way they criticize his players.

He says these are only 1 7-, 1 8- and 1 9-year-old kids and shouldn't be treated the same as the pros. This sounds like strong stuff, except that nobody ever really gets on his players, except for some criticism of his quarterback, Rick Leach. That's almost unavoidable since Leach is at the heart of this team. When he does well, he gets the credit. When he doesn't, he gets the blame.

This is the lot of the quarterback. But in any case, the comments haven't been all that tough, or even all that much. Who gets on the Michigan and Michigan State players? Nobody, really. I believe the people in the media respect the fact that they are college players. You also have to ask another question: Who put these young men into the situation where they play in a stadium of 104,000 people, for hundreds of thousands of dollars, and are seen from coast to coast on TV? Let's have a day for Harivell Ernie Harwell Here is a man who will be going into baseball's Hall of Fame one day.

If Red Barber and Mel Allen made it this year, our man can't be very far behind. Who deserves it more? He has served this game well for years. He is a true credit to his profession and to the sport of baseball. Tim Staudt, sports director at WJIM-TV in Lansing, has suggested a "day" for Ernie. I realize these days can get pretty heavy, but what a nice thing it would be if the fans threw one for Ernie in appreciation for all the joy he has brought them over the years.

Mickey Stanley Did you notice this man received the loudest applause at Sunday's reunion of the 1968 team? That tells you what honest effort can mean. DickVitale Did you see what the coach is going to do for anyone buying season tickets for the Pistons? Four tickets: an autographed basketball personally presented by Vitale. Eight tickets: dinner with the coach and his wife at the restaurant of your choice. Sixteen tickets: a trip for two to a Pistons' road game. Twenty-four tickets: four days and three nights in Las Vegas.

Thirty or more tickets: the Las Vegas trip and other goodies. AH this is called effort and imagination. If this team fails, it won't be this man's fault. Training camps Monte Clark is saying six weeks aren't enough to get his Lions ready for the season. The colleges get ready in three weeks and don't have the'benefit of any exhibition games.

This is called the old point of view. anatw MfiHui mini iWrrir AP Photo Nancy Lopez plans wedding next spring Nancy Lopez, golf's top rookie money winner and one of the top players on the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour, said Monday she planned to marry Tim Melton, a sportscaster for WHP-TV in Harrisburg, on April 14. She said "it was love a first sight" when she met Melton, who interviewed her during the Lady Keystone earlier this summer. Lopez announced her engagement on NBC-TV's "Today" show. QB Plunkett cut; Bartkowski demoted quarterback Kim McQuilken and placed defensive tackle Brent Adams on the injured reserve list to reach the 43-man limit.

THE CINCINNATI Bengals announced that quarterback Ken Anderson will have an operation Tuesday on his injured right hand and will miss at least the first five weeks of the season. John Reaves will assume Anderson's duties. The Baltimore Colts got some good news and some bad news. By The Associated Press Jim Plunkett wasn't injured like a lot of other National Football League quarterbacks last weekend, but he suffered the unkindest cut of all Monday when he was waived by the San Francisco 49ers. Plunkett, a Heisman Trophy winner and an eight-year veteran quarterback, was waived as the 49ers sought to reach the NFL's 43-man roster limit.

The NFL roster limit will go back up to 45 players by Sunday as teams can recall two players they previously placed on waivers. Plunkett, who was obtained by the 49ers in 1976 in a trade with the New England Patriots, completed just one of his last 18 passes during the exhibition season. Plunkett came to the 49ers between the 1975 and 1976 sesons after five years with the Patriots. In 1971, his first year with the Pats, he was named Rookie of the Year in the NFL, throwing 19 TD passes. In two years with Frisco he threw 491 passes and completed 254 for 3,285 yards and 22 touchdowns.

He had 30 interceptions. Plunkett and defensive back Bob Jury, an All-American defensive back from the University of Pittsburgh, were among eight players waived Monday by the 49ers. San Francisco also placed veteran wide receiver Gene Washington on the injured waiver list. THE 49ERS weren't the only NFL deciding or finding out who their quarterbacks would be for the 1978 season. June Jones III, a relatively unknown quantity when the NFL started its exhibition season, was named the Falcons starting quarterback for Atlanta's regular season opener Sunday against the Oilers in Houston, i The second-year signal caller from Portland State appeared in Atlanta's final game last season but earned the starting nod this year, directing the team to two preseason victories.

Jones will replace Steve Bartkowski, the Falcons' starting quarterback last season and their No. 1 draft pick in 1975. Atlanta also cut seven players, including five-year veteran IT 'm I Quarterback Bert Jones, who suffered an incomplete separation of his right shoulder in last Saturday's preseason finale against the Detroit Lions, thinks he will be ready for the Colts opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday.
