AUG. 22. 1978 G2i3S pCSJIIO by Jack Saylor Walled Lake partnership spawns 200 mp.h. boat get Emmett Kelly, because if you have to doctor up the game to make it more appealing, then it ain't worth it" DAN FOUTS is nursing a bruised shoulder and, according to the trainer of the San Diego Chargers, the quarterback may be out of action for a while.

That's bad news for the Chargers, considering that they have traded quarterback Bill Munson to Buffalo. out?" When told that the Bosox still had a healthy lead of 84 games in the American League East, Medieros replied, "Deo gracias," and hurried to join the rest of the cardinals in their daily meeting. GRAIG NETTLES found out the hard way the truth of the current song by Meatloaf that says "two out of three ain't bad." Nettles was two out of three on his birthday Sunday his wife gave birth to their fourth child, Jeffrey, and he hit his 19th home run in the seventh inning to give the New York Yankees a 4-3 lead over Seattle. But Bob Robertson spoiled the third gift, a win, when he belted a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh for the Mariners' 5-4 win. iliz bets Ron TurcotU Ln Elder Who are the six pitchers to throw two no-hitters In one season in the major leagues? Cincinnati's Johnny VanderMeer did it first, hurling back -to-back no-hitters in 1938.

He remains the only player to accomplish such a feat. Jim Tobln of the Braves had a pair of no-hitters in 1944, though one was a five-inning job. In 1951 ABie Reynolds of the Yankees threw a pair of no-hitters and Virgil Trucks of the Tigers duplicated the accomplishment a season later. Dean Chance of the Twins tossed two in 1967, one of them shortened by rain to five innings. Nolan Ryan of California no-hit Kansas City and Detroit in 1973.

Another Cincinnati pitcher, Jim Matoney, got through nine innings of no-hit bal twice in the 1965 season, losing the gem in the 1 1th against the Mets June 14 but beating the Cubs in a 10-inning no-hitter Aug. 9. Ron Donahue, Lincoln Park Today's Question: Name an infield from the all-time Boston Red Sox roster in which each player won an American League batting title before going to the Red Sox. Joseph Michaels, Allen Park If you're complaining about your gas mileage these days How would you feel if the fuel for your machine cost $10 a gallon and it used six to seven gallons in about seven seconds? That's what it costs Mike McCarthy and Dave Rosenkranz and that's the "mileage" they get. McCarthy and Rosenkranz sounds like a great name for an ad agency or a vaudeville act.

But what they are is the hottest team in drag boating in the country. McCarthy, 37, and 35-year-old Rosenkranz are co-owners of King Marine in Walled Lake (outboards, family boats, etc.) and for diversion they operate the "Ambush" racing team. Ambush is a blown-fuel hydroplane which McCarthy and Rosenkranz maintain. The boat has won three straight races (Columbiaville, High Point, N.C.; and Dayton, Ohio) and has a 500-point lead in the National Drag Boating Association season title race. The next race is Sept.

2-3, again over the Holloway Reservoir in Columbiaville. "It's going to be almost impossible for anyone to catch us," said Rosenkranz, who grew up in Dearborn but now lives at Union Lake. The prize at the end of the roostertail? It's $15,000, but the whole thing is for pride it won't make much of a dent in Drag boating happens to be a non-profit sport. The Ambush is the fourth of its kind that the two entrepreneurs have built. The boat itself costs $8,000 and they keep three Chrysler 480-cubic inch Hemi engines at $13,000 a copy.

"We rotate them and rebuild 'em after every race," pointed out. The fuel nitro-methane and alcohol, pot gasoline is another expense, approximately $65 worth for a 'quarter mile. 2 But the Ambush does move on out. "We set a new course "record at High Point in each of two runs," Rosenkranz said. The old mark was 190 m.p.h., we went 193.96." Ambush's top speed for the quarter mile is a 201.6 clocking at Austin, last year.

Still another expense is a professional driver, Bill Vance, 3vho flies or drives to the race sites from Kansas City. 2 Gary Brehmer and Phil Jarrell assist the Ambush team in the Shop and at race sites. "Both Mike and I have gotten in the boat to go 80 to 100 jn.p.h.," Rosenkranz said, "but I have no desire to get into that oatatall." I The kicks come from watching it. "I was out at Cass Lake jbne day and happened to see a drag boat," he said. "It was real interesting.

I'd never seen anything like it." McCarthy, who lives in Warren, stressed that the boat is trictly a sideline. "We don't let it interfere with business. We close King Marine at 7 o'clock, then we work on Ambush after hours Sometimes until 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning." RON TURCOTTE rode Secretariat to the Triple Crown, but now he'll be satisfied with something more mundane: He's determined to walk again, though he remains paralyzed from the. waist down. Turcotte, 36, was one of North America's leading jockeys before he took a spill at Belmont and underwent surgery July 14 for vertebrae and nerve damage.

"There were several of us in the room and Ron was laughing and joking with us," said his brother, Noel. "He says he's going to walk again. He's determined about that He's got a lot of faith. For a while, his spirits had been down." MILO HAMILTON is on the hot seat in Pittsburgh. He's the broadcaster who replaced the legendary Bob Prince when Prince was fired as the voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates after last year.

Prince was famous for his gee-whiz approach to the Bucs and for several stock phrases "We had 'em all the way," "How sweet it is," and "You can kiss it goodby." Hamilton is more reserved and impartial, two qualities that have brought him much abuse by the Pittsburgh fans. "I will put our broadcast against any in the major leagues in terms of professionalism, knowledge of the game, excitement, whatever," says Hamilton. "If people want a clown, they'd better "We work on it almost every night," Rosenkranz added. "There are so many things you have to do to it general maintainence, tightening up nuts and bolts." Some guys like to polish a bowling ball or fiddle with their golf clubs Mike and Dave just happen to like tinkering with a drag boat. TERRY MURRAY a former Red Wing defenseman who tolled last year in the Philadelphia Flyers' chain for the Maine Mariners, is working out this summer washing cars.

Murray and several of his teammates toiled two hours Sunday, washing more than 50 cars in a money-raising effort for the Biddeford (Me.) Ice Arena. "People in his area have given the Mariners fantastic support during our first season," says Murray, who played for the Wings for half a season in 1 976-77. "We were glad to help out. It's important that these kids have a place to play." LEE ELDER won the Westchester Classic Sunday, and he did it with the pressure on. There is always a ton of pressure when you're golfing for a first-place prize of $60,000, but Elder had extra reason to be nervous in the tournament: If he hadn't won some money, he'd have been stuck in New York.

During the press conference after his win, Elder leaned over and asked PGA official Tom Place for a loan. For one thing, it's tough cashing a $60,000 check on Sunday, and for another, "He didn't have enough money to get home," said Place. CARDINAL HUMBERTO MEDIEROS is in Rome to help elect the next pope, but he showed Monday that his heart was on other matters, at least for a while.
