A former Air Force sergeant with an impeccable 12-year military record, he won the Bronze Star and Purple Heart during one of three tours of duty in Vietnam. He could be your next-door neighbor, a mechanic, accountant or the family doctor. His name is Leonard Matlovich and he's one of the country's most controversial homosexuals.

The Lucy Show vs. the Air Force is winding through the courts in a challenge to the military's longstanding ban against homosexuals. The story is told in an NBC movie, "Sgt. Matlovich vs. the U.S.

Air Force," starring Brad Dourif as Matlovich. The movie will be broadcast at 9 p.m. Monday. Matiovich's attorney, E. Carrington Boggan, who is handling the case free of charge, says he hopes the issue will reach the Supreme Court and produce a landmark decision on gay rights comparable to that court's historic school integration decision in 1954.

"It's a simple case of civil rights," says Matlovich, who was discharged in 1975 after informing his superior officer he was gay. A decision on Matiovich's appeal to have his Air Force discharge overturned is expected soon from the U.S. Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia. It's likely that the losing side will appeal to the nation's highest court "No matter what happens, gay men and women will continue to serve in the military," says Matlovich, BORN AT Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, the son of a retired Air Force sergeant, Matlovich now lives in San Francisco and lectures around the country on his struggle for the right to be openly gay. "Homosexuals aren't Interested in converting heterosexuals' he tells his audiences.

"Heterosexuality is as strong as it ever was. But new sexual values, women's liberation and the changing roles of the sexes terrify and anger many persons. "People think the mere knowledge that military personnel or teachers are gay will automatically seduce others. Hogwash! Today's alternatives are not limited to a choice between straight or gay life-styles. The choices center on a reconsideration of the traditional roles of masculinity and feminity.

"Remaining in the closet encourages ignorance, fear and self-hatred," Matlovich says. "I just want to live and let live. That means equal rights and protection under the law."
