Neither is the LPGA tour, which closes out its week-long run at Dearborn Country Club Sunday. The tour is a many-splendored thing now compared to the 'small band of pioneers who started the play-for-pay circuit not for much pay, at that. And there was very little to attract fans, who pay money. Now, there is a burgeoning group of young college and Amateur golf products who play better sida bet! pulled tendon in his upper left leg, which has resulted in a deluge of phone calls to the Houston Oilers' front office by people looking for a good acupuncturist.

The Oilers, in their haste to assure people that they weren't connected with the treatment, hadn't recommended it and were washing their, hands of the whole thing, said: "Neither the club nor the club physicians expressed any opinion concerning the possible effect acupuncture treatments and procedures may have on the treatment and cure of football or non-football injuries So long as the player complies with this contractual requirement (to accept treatment by And, knowing Bill Walton, I can't imagine him playing when he's hurt." JIM RICE doesn't like talk about the Triple Crown, despite leading the league in RBI and home runs and closing in rapidly on Rod Carew in the batting race. "I can't think of the Triple Crown," says Rice, who has 30 homers, 101 RBI and a .326 average. "There are too many good players out there who can outhit me and drive in more runs. It's tough enough to hit a baseball let alone think about something like that." Despite getting a home run and four hits Friday night, the big outfielder isn't happy with his hitting. "I'm not hitting it with the consistency I'd like.

What I'm doing is finding the holes." And making them in the outfield seats with his crashing liners to left. WARREN POWERS the head football coach at the University of Missouri, has his team practicing hard at mastering the school's fight song. "I'm surprised at the number of players that don't know it," said the easily-surprised coach. "We've got to have more respect, more pride for the school. We plan on singing it after we win, so we better know it in case we win one." CALVIN HILL who has walked out of more football camps than Joe Don Looney, is scheduled to meet with Washington coach Jack Pardee early next week to discuss his return to the sooner and are nice to look at besides, i It seems the skirts are higher and the scores are lower.

MARK DONAHUE the standout guard at the University of Michigan last year, wasn't given much of a chance of making the NFL when the Cincinnati Bengals selected him in the 11th round. "If you're looking for someone 6-foot-3, 260 pounds, a 50-inch chest, 36-inch waist, who runs the 40 yards in 4.8 seconds, this guys doesn't fit the mold," says head coach Bill Johnson. But, says assistant general manager Mike Brown, "He's a competitive sucker. He shows better the longer he's around. He wears well." Well enough to have become the No.

3 guard and earn a spot on the permanent roster. "I know I'm laid back but I think you can be laid back and competitive at the same time," says Donahue. "When you get into something competitive, whether it's checkers or racquetball, you don't want to come out a loser. What the heck, it's the American way." 1 DAVE TWARDZIK isn't exactly enamored with teammate Bill Walton, who says, he is through playing with Portland because he was made to play with an injury. Walton is reported to be on his way to Golden State.

"The fans and the press have been very nice to Bill is this situation. Can you imagine what the reaction would have been in New York or Philly? They would have put him through a shredder," said Twardzik, who thought Walton a bit tacky for having friends speak for him throughout the brouhaha. "He hasn't been communicating that's not right, though. The people have a right to know. They pay our salaries when they buy tickets will vault them into prominence soon, too.

Ray Volpe concedes that sex appeal has helped the growth tf the LPGA, although he hesistates to overplay it. "When I first took this job I went out and asked people in the gallery why they were there," Volpe said. "Some said because was an event! or 'for a day in the sun' or 'I came to watch great golf or I girl "Some come just from affiliation with the host club or support of the charity or even community pride." But Volpe noted: "Laura Baugh is a great contributor to the tour. So is Jan Stephenson Stacy, Pat Bradley and Nancy Lopez epitomizes everything. know, the old theory about cheer for the underdog, or cheer for a kid, or cheer for a Mexican Nancy has something that is very special." Volpe observed that few athletes have the ability to Electrify an audience.

"Golf is usually inhibitive in showing personality, but Nancy has the ability to say, without talking, 'I emote to you, I relate to you, I like you, I love you' like Arnold Palmer, players like Nancy do it without talking to the gallery. "Arnold Palmer is sex appeal and I don't mean it in a sick way. He's a very attractive guy, call it charisma, whatever," the commissioner added. "Nancy has that. Laura has that look of an All-American girl.

Jan has sex appeal all those things have helped the tour. We have a great variety of talents and personalities. we can just get 'em known." Dragging Cosmos take one-game lead in NASL playoff Bv United Press International The New York Cosmos, pleading fatigue on arrival, were in no condition for the Portland Timbers Friday night. But a rugged defense and a second-half goal by Dennis Tueart carried the defending to a 1-0 victory in the opening game of their North America.1 Soccer League semifinal series. Just two minutes into the second half, Tueart beat Portland goalkeeper Mick Poole from 15 yards out when Steve Hunt sent a cross to the right side. The ball sailed past the head of a charging Giorgio Chinaglia, but Tueart was there to blast it home.

The Cosmos, coming off a nerve-bending game Wednesday night, had to play a regulation game, then two 15-minute overtime sessions before winning in a sudden-death shootout. With the victory over the Minnesota Kicks at Giants Stadium in New Jersey, the Cosmos spent part of Thursday flying to Portland for the start of the two-game series. NASL commissioner Phil Woosnam had sought to reschedule the game for television purposes Sunday. But Portland's Civic Stadium was not available because of baseball dates by the Pacific Coast League Portland Beavers. The Strikers, third-place finishers behind the Tea Men and the Rowdies, who tied for first in the Eastern Division, are led by forward David Irving and goalkeeper Ian Turner. The Rowdies, who have not missed the playoffs in their four-year history, have played well since suffering through a mid-season slump. Midfielder Rodney Marsh led Tampa Bay in scoring with 52 points, fourth highest in the the NASL.
