are er 6D DETROIT FREE PRESSMONDAY. JULY 10. 1978 No one shows more poise than rookie Alan Trammel! through the middle. They stopped the game and the umps threw both balls over to the dugout. That meant a lot to me.

"I saw Jim Palmer. Ron Guidry and Mike Torrez all of them in those first few days and what else could be tougher? I just love it here and Lou does too. We're pretty luckv euvs you know." 3 3 By JOE FALLS Free Prest Soorti Writer ARLINGTON, Tex. Jason Thompson won't be the only member of the Tigers at the All-Star game in San Diego Tuesday night. Alan Trammell will be there, too.

The kid will be going right through the front gate and sitting in the upper deck behind i home plate. And it's sure going to seem strange to him. "I'm not used to going In that way." the 20-year-old shortstop was saying at breakfast Sunday morning. "I hope I know how to do it." 2 Trammell grew up in San Diego, Jiist five minutes from the ball park, and pent the better part of his boyhood devising ways to sneak into the games. "We were pretty good at it," he smiled.

"In fact, we were experts. We had three sure ways to do it and they never caught us." They made their moves at one or two o'clock in the afternoon when security was light. more poise than this rookie shortstop from San Diego. He is 20-going-on-40. "I just can't believe it." Al Kaline was saying outside of the broadcasting booth the other night.

"Those two kids seem to know what's going on all the time. They know just what they have to do on every play." GEORGE KELL SAID, "How about Alan Trammell for the Most Valuable Player on this club?" Kaline replied, "I just can't wait until I see them next spring, when they're a little more mature and fill out a little more. They're really going to be something." Whitaker is the quiet one. He keeps to himself around the clubhouse and around the hotel. Trammell is the one who smiles and says hello to everybody.

"Don't you ever get nervous about anything?" he was asked at breakfast. "You know, I wonder about that myself," he said. "Like, I'm standing out at short taking some grounders before the game and I see the people coming into the stands. I say to myself, 'Hey, why aren't you nervous about this whole I look around and I'm just not. "If I blow a ball, it's not the end of the world.

I'll get the next one. I guess I've always been able to do things in my life and I don't see why I can't keep doing them in the major leagues." ALONG WITH RUSTY STAUB, Trammell and Whitaker have been the steadiest performers on the Tigers. It is expected of Staub, a 1 5-year pro. But to see two youngsters, just 20 years of age, performing so calmly in times of stress well, this is what keeps a lot of people on the Tigers from becoming too dejected when things are going badly. "It helped a lot to play at the end of last season," said Trammell.

"My first game was in Fenway Park before a sellout crowd of 35,000. Lou got a hit his first time up, a single through the middle, and then I got a hit my first time up, a single Alan Trammell 3 't "It meant we had to hide in there for five or six hours but we never minded it. We always found something to do. We never bloke anything or stole anything. Sometimes we'd just hide out in a corner and talk baseball all afternoon but it was really an exciting thing to do.

In Detroit, the crowds chant, "Lou, Lou, Lou," whenever Styeet Lou Whitaker comes to the plate. The young second baseman has a style about him already a freshness that is appealing to everyone. Trammell doesn't have this sparkle but he is the one they say will be the heart of this team for years to come. Nobody has TIGER TRAVELS Firestone's new national credit card-good at 1400 6-cyl. He woke up in the morning screaming like a stuck pig. "Never again. was complaining. "I'll never share another room with anyone! I didn't sleep a damned wink all night!" I Like most managers of today, Houk is easy on his players. The days of checking rooms is part of the romantic past of baseball.

Jimmie Dykes used to give the elevator operator a couple of baseballs and tell him to get the autographs of anyone who carne in after curfew. The next morning Dykes simply looked at the balls and handed out the fines. What Houk demands is that his players conduct themselves properly in public. He gOt after them when they started acting up on a recent airplane flight. He absolutley prohibits any merrymaking on the team bus after losing a game.

If the players want to fool around after dark, they are going to fool around. Houk knows there is little way to stop them. He just won't tolerate any open defiance of his authority. HOUK ALLOWS his players to pick their own roommates. The only rule he has is that he doesn't like two pitchers staying together.

Jim Slaton was called in to replace Baker. -The Tigers had a chance for the tying run in the fifth but this time a base-running boo-boo by Tim Corcoran killed them. He got to second on a double but then was caught off when Bonds steamed in to take Ron LeFlore's short fly in right. 'THE TIGERS finally got even on May's home run in the seventh, a towering fly which just dropped over the fence in right.

It was his first since May 20 but he was given a rousing reception when he returned to the dugout, with Houk leading the welcoming committee. The man really wanted this one. iWith a chance to go ahead, the Tigers were stopped first Bonds, then by their own man, Trammell. After May's homer, Phil Mankowski and Corcoran singled. Corcoran's was a line shot into the right-field corner.

The ball was headed for extra bases when Bonds lunged and caught it while going full speed. He wheeled and threw back to the Infield and kept Corcoran on first while Mankowski wheeled into third. Trammell then jammed into a double play to end the inning. TAGGING THE TIGERS -i The Bird is feeling better, thank you.
