2-E Sunday, Sept. 18, 77 DETROIT FREE PRESS nn i 1 in rw virivn.av JL W. Jv-T AS 1 JLSM.M.s 9 il Holmes Takes a Walk I hi I 1 jlHfc "This will be the year Kenny (Anderson) forgets all that humble-pie business and simply accepts the responsibility of being the best, quarterback in the league," Reid wrote. "I believe he has to start doing it for himself, to receive the credit he deserves for working hard and living by what he produces. "Anderson produces more than anyone else and should be cognizant of his importance to the franchise." Reid, a concert pianist, also said he thinks middle linebacker Jim LeClair is the hub of the Bengals' defense.

"Jack Lambert of the Steelers is more publicized but is no more and perhaps not as good. Jim is fast, brutally strong, Geoff Petrie out of NBA Ernie Holmes walks out Bob Kuechenberg ready to play Mike Reid new job Ken Rosewall plans ahead a chance he might be ready next week." Said Kuechenberg: "There's no 'might' about it. I am going to be ready. I could play this week, actually. It's going to be tough to sit, especially if it's an offensive show." The Pittsburgh Steelers' oft-troubled defensive tackle Ernie Holmes is back in the news again.

Holmes walked out of the team's practice Friday because he is upset about the estimated $28,000 in legal fees he owes the Steelers from his cocaine trial in Amarillo, last February. The Steelers earlier told Holmes the money would be deducted from his salary in a lump sum. "My financial problems are about to smother the breath out of me," saild Holmes. On his way out of the locker room he told club president Dan Rooney, "I can't hack it." Later he phoned Rooney to apologize. "I had to make a move to get some recognition," Holmes said.

"Everyone thinks I'm the lamb of the world. I can't starve. I won't starve." Holmes, who has been in financial trouble in his five years with the Steelers, was acquitted last winter on a charge of cocaine posession. He is still on probation from a shooting incident when he was charged with assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the firing of a rifle at three trucks and a State Police helicopter in 1973. This year, Holmes, a starter on Pittsburgh's Super Bowl chamoions of 1974 and '75, has lost his starting job to Steve Furness.

Asked if his walkout would result in a fine, Holmes said, "How can they fine me? I don't have no money. You can't get nothing from nothing." Ex-Bengal Pens His Thoughts Mike Reid hung up his football spikes a year ago to concentrate on his music. Now, the former all-pro defensive tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals has begun another career as a newspaper columnist for a Cincinnati paper. In his first column, Reid has some interesting things to say about his former teammates. Petrie' 's Through with Surgery Geoff Petrie, who has undergone two knee surgeries since the beginning of last season, may be finished with pro basketball.

The former Portland Trail Blazer rookie of the year has refused to sign a contract with the Atlanta Hawks because there is enough pain in his knee when he jumps that he might not to play again and he doesn't feel signing a contract would be fair to the Hawks. "The Hawks made a good contract offer," Petrie said. "But I couldn't accept it, it would have been dishonest. "I tried to play basketball heavy in July, but I realized there was no way I could compete in the NBA anymore. I just can't do it.

It would be embarrassing for everyone. I've had the best medical advice available, but I've had enough surgery." Atlanta coach Hubie Brown, however, thinks Petrie could play again. "You've got to understand that Petrie is an emotional, high-strung guy. He's gone through a psychological tramau-tic thing. I'd like to see him get together with Dr.

Houghston from a physical and psychological point of view before he makes any heavy decision. We don't count him out yet." Rosewall Plans to Slick Around Ken Rosewall is quickly approaching his 43d birthday but you wouldn't know it judging by his tennis game Ijiese days. Harold Solomon, who just turned 25, had his hands full in beating Rosewall, 6-5, 6-2, 2-6. 0-6, 6-3, in the finals of the WCT Tournament of Champions. Rosewall, who collected $30,000 for finishing second, said he is not planning on retiring from the game.

"I've said it often, I go from year to year," he said. "I didn't play Forrest Hills for two years and the reason I did this year was because I had qualified for this final and wanted to be in New York. "From here, I go to play in Hong Kong, then a special event in Japan and then tournaments on the Asian Circuit and in Australia in December. We'll let next year take care of itself. I can't formally retire.

I'll be back for different things. There's a lot of incentive to remain involved on the tennis scene." capable of enormous intensity and possesses a rare quality in professional sports a mind." In a bit of a predicition, Reid wrote, "I beleive the Bengals will get to the Super Bowl and not win it. But then, I said disco music would never last." Quick Recovery for Kuechenberg When Bob Kuechenberg fractured two vertebra on Aug. 13, the Miami Dolphins thought their star, offensive guard would be out until the fifth or sixth game of the season. So you can imagine coach Don Shula's surprise when Kuechenberg shed his 30-pound plaster cast and reported in pads for practice this week.

"He surprised everybody," said a pleased Shula. "There's Tigers Fall to Yanks, 9-4 GIANTkg BASEBALL: Outfielder Reggie Smith has signed a four-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The terms were not announced, but the figure was estimated at $1 million. Smith was batting .314 with 28 homers and 80 RBIs. Infielders Ron Washington and Rafael Lan- destoy and outfielder Jeff Leonard also signed contracts.

6 FOOT FOWLING: The Grand Prix of Bowling in Detroit, Dec. 6-10, Is one of two tournaments in the upcoming seven-tourney Professional Bowlers COLOR IV. "How many home runs did they hit? I lost count. We just couldn't get them out. If we got one guy out, the next one hit a home run." However, Yankees' manager Billy Martin was not about to predict any pennants based on Saturday's strong showing.

nothing to be elated about right now," Martin said. "We've still got 13 games to play. We've got to keep winning because Baltimore is winning, too." Orioles9 Forfeit Will Stick BALTIMORE (UPI) American League president Lee MacPhail Saturday backed umpire Marty Springstead's ruling and declared the Baltimore Orioles forfeit losers of Thursday night's game at Toronto for refusing to take the field in the bottom of the fifth inning. "In the judgment of this office, the circumstances did not justify manager (Earl) Weaver's taking his team off the field and refusing to continue to play," said MacPhail. "I am most disturbed to have any game bearing on the pennant not played to the final out, but I cannot find sufficient reasons for setting aside the forfeiture of the game to Toronto as was required by the rules." Continued from First Sports brew and Mincher both hit their home runs over the leftfield fence.

That home run, by the way, was Thompson's 28th of the season, tops by any Tiger since Cash hit 32 in 1971. Following that brief interruption, the Yankees continued to pulverize the Tigers as Jackson whacked a two-run HR off Vern Ruhle in the fifth, and Nettles connected for the 35th time this season with Willie Randolph On' base in the sixth. Jackson's second homer, and his 29th of the season, came off rookie Ed Glynn in the eighth. With the game out of reach, the Tigers scored again in their share of the eighth when Ron LeFlore sent Alan Trammell home with a single to center. The game was delayed for 35 minutes, just as the njnth inning was about to begin, because of a sudden cloudburst.

The Tigefs added another run in the ninth, after play was resumed, when Ben Oglivie doubled Thompson in. The loss was the Tigers' 11th in their last 14 games. Unser finally passed Yarbor-ough's Camaro halfway through the final lap. He overtook Yarborough going into turn three for the final time and got home just a hood ahead of Yarborough. "I didn't think I could pull it off," he smiled, "but I knew I had to try. He seemed to have more power than me." "Stupidity," muttered Yarborough, chastising himself for losing after leading each of the first 47 laps. "I passed him on the 'last lap down the back-stretch and I thought I had enough power, but I was beating him from Turn Four to One all day.

I should have waited." Behind Unser and Yarborough were Darrell Waltrip, Richard Petty, Gunnar Nilson, Gordon Johncock, Mario An-dretti, Johnny Rutherford and Benny Parsons. It was the 13th consecutive loss for the Horned Frogs (0-2). TCU has won only two of its last 37 games. Bryant intercepted a Steve Bayuk pass at the Oregon three in the fourth quarter and raced untouched through midfield before reserve linebacker Steve Barker came off the bench, without wearing a helmet, to make the tackle. The touchdown gave Oregon (1-1) a 24-3 lead.

However, reserve TCU quarterback Don Harris came off the bench to toss touchdown passes of 17 yards to Tony Accomando and 23 yards to Mike Renfro to cut the margin to 24-17. Frogs' defensive end Barry Crayton then swiped a pass and returned it 39 yards for the tying touchdown. The bizarre of f-the-bench tackle by Barker was the first such illegal tackle in TCU history.
