This is one of the scenes from "The tasia," now at the Wilson in its seventh week, where he enacts the fable to Dukas' famous music. This famous character needs no introduction to filmgoers anywhere. Here he is as the Sorcerer's Apprentice, in "Fan Today's Program at Your Favorite Theater THEATERS MARKED WITH A ARE CO-OPERATIVE THEATERS 'Buck Privates' Tops Fox Comedy Bill BY FRANK Frre Preaa Motion IF THIS week's major feature at the Fox, "Buck Privates" can lie considered any criterion, a draftee's life is just a jitterbug paradise, where comedians enliven the humdrum work at camp, and hostesses break in to the routine to pep up the boys with patriotic songs and boogie-woogie, strictly eight-to-the-bar.

As Paul, Aherne's valet, he produces a comedy performance worthy of high praise. Nils Asther, who is making a comeback, makes a very brief appearance, Bobby Jones Returns as Palm Beach M.C. Back by popular request, Bobby Jones resumes his post as master of ceremonies at the Palm Beach Cafe this week, where he will be welcomed by the many friends he made during his previous stay of many weeks. LeRoy and Sharp head the new acts with their family of four dummies, which they use singly and in groups for their comedy ventriloquism.

The three Del Gray Girls are held over for more of their rapid-fire tap steps and the music is by Don Pablo's orchestra, with Monnie Drake to sing the lyrics. "IT 'ICi 1 inn T---iir 'The Lady Eve" Is So generously enuuwea are snapea into superl uve Bmarincss. Plays Fair Cardsharo Miss Stanwyck plays an attrae uve card sharp who with her father snd a male accomplice is working a boat homeward bound from South America, that picks up a wealthy and diffident amateur snake expert fresh from the Amazon jungles, in the person of onaa. The manner in which he falls for the designing temptress, and is disillusioned, while the woman who first regarded him as just another victim, then learns to love him, treads a troubled romantic trail must be seen to be fully ap-predated. The unmasking is Inevitable. The bitter parting, although a stock movie trick, is worked out cleverly.

If the reconciliation seems a mi rar-retched it can easily be overlooked in remem' brance of the sparkling dialog war, constantly leavens the spirited action, the revenge Miss Stan wyck gets when she masquerades as an English noblewoman, and the manner in which Fonda stumbles his slapstick way through the airy narrative. It discloses a tie-liciously ponderous and vastly re- sultful comic facet on his part hitherto unsuspected in this quarter. Miss Stanwyck lends grace and charm and histrionic distinction to her role of the temptress, in which the necessary viciousness always maks finer feminine qualities. Tough Boy Reforms Charles Coburn revels in the fat part of the lovable cardsharp father, with Eric Blore as his confederate. William Demarcst is Fonda's tough bodyguard, and Eugene Pallette comes into his own as Fonda's ale brewing father.

In "The Penalty," second feature, Edwin Arnold plays "Stuff" Nelson, a murderous big-time bank robber, with G-men always hot on his heels. His devotion to his young son, "Roosty," comes dangerously near to being his undoing on several occasions, but the boy, worshipful of his father, always manages his escape. However, when "Stuff" shows up at a farm where "Roosty" has been paroled from a reformatory, and brutally shoots down the old grandfather who battles in his behalf, "Roosty," reformed through the kindness of his benefactors, decides to stay on, as G-men get Nelson. Eugene Reynolds, who used to set in Detroit before going to Hollywood, conies off with plenty of credit as "Roosty," the potential gangster whose reformation is brought about credibly, with Lionel Barrymore as the kindly grandfather, Robert Sterling as the fanner, and Marsha Hunt as his schoolteacher sweetheart. Arnold is, of course, his smooth, ruthless self.

Barrymore does excellently in his corner, and Emma Dunn supplies a softening influence satisfactorily. Avenue Star LLOMA THIKSION This burlesque star is heading the new show which opens Friday at the Avenue Theater. Riviera Sets Songfest for Saturday Bill The Riviera Theatre's visual broadcast on the stage Saturday from 1 to 1:30 p. m. will take the form this week of a Songfest with the audience joining in singing the "Song of the Week." The stage show presents Prudy and Bill with child entertainers from ages of four to 12 years who compete in prior auditions before appearing on the program.

Frank who for seven years played first trumpet for Guy Lom-bardo, is LeBaron's new trumpet player and will also sing ballads, as he has sung on many national radio broadcasts. Addition of a second piano with Irving Priesler at the keyboard will effect a fuller instrumentation, as the piano will replace an accordion. As to the new Easter outfits for his boys, LeBaron refuses to divulge details, says they are to be a surprise.

IMTIIIFES 41 2 JO CHICAGO, -April 4 (A.P.) Miss Lillian Gish, stage and screen star, wants the movie going pub-lie to beware of "propaganda films" like those in which she appeared prior to the World War. Speaking yesterday at a rally sponsored by the America First Committee, Miss Gish said that she took a part in "selling the idea of hate to the American people." "I am not proud of the part I played then," she said. "I tell you the story now in the hope that the American people will not be fooled again." Miss Gish asserted that the films were produced for the purpose of persuading the public to go to war, and were "calculated to stir the emotions of the Americans so that they would be willing tigni and die for the cause." The America First Committee is a national organization which has participated in debate over foreign policy and the extent and form of aid to Britain. Mrel Cat "APiY P.ttnt -yeu "I At least that's the general 1m-f pression to be gleaned from this obvious quickie; the first of a series of draft comedies which are being turned out as fast as possible on Hollywood's assembly line. Slapstick comedy and some catchy tunes in the approved boogie-woogie style are the main assets of the picture which has almost no plot In fact "Buck Privates" can safely be called a series of sequences some funny, some very trite in which Abbott and Costello and the Andrews Sisters are given full rein.

'As a breather between their acts, a negligible story, which must have been devised with a plotter aetat 1920 or earlier, has been squeezed into the film, to occupy the time of Jane Frazee, Alan Curtis and Lee Bowman. But that can be forgotten quickly and without regret Comedians Have New Material The main fact which stands out In "Buck Privates" is that at last Abbott and Costello have found some new material much of it funny which they use. together with a few shards of their time-worn and somewhat threadbare routines of old. They manage to keep the laughs coming with pace for the most part in their appearances in this film, aided to some degree by Nat Pendelton, their nemesis. For those who find the Jive trio, the Andrews Sisters appealing, there are several scenes in which the girls get in the groove musically, and patriotically in their familiar manner.

Towards the close the film has a few shots of army maneuvers which are interesting though all too brief. Second Film Lacks Care If more care and consideration had been given to the casting, direction and dialog of the second picture this week, "The Man Who Found Himself" might have resulted in a pleasant sophisticated comedy, for, although the plot is based on an old theme that of mistaken identity it has many opportunities for skillful handling, which have obviously been missed. In the leading roles Brian Aherne and Kay Francis are lacking in credibility; Aherne particularly who seems 111 at ease in so broad a comedy part Miss Francis, whose recent brush with 15-'- M-T 1. 1 1 1 Entire New fJ9IM HARRY STEVEIIS toy trtm 5c 1 Show Friday ANDRE ftmttx Oijjertui C0M0I 'CKiiN.
