DETROIT FREE PRESS Thursday Aug. 18, 77 13-C 4 Men Admit Fatal Bombing Of Cycle Club BY KATHY WARBELOW Free Press Staff Writer Four members of the Highwaymen motorcycle club pleaded guilty Wednesday of the March 1976 bombing of a rival club headquarters which injured two people and killed a passing motorist. In a related case, five members of the same club were acquitted by a Detroit Recorder's Court jury of trying to burn another gang's clubhouse in 1975. Both incidents were the result of a virtual war among three west side motorcycle gangs which set off a series of shootings, bombing and burnings. KENNETH (BIG AL) SMITH, 22, pleaded guilty of second-degree murder in the March 1976 bomb ing of the Forbidden Wheels clubhouse, 21607 Fen-kell.

The Incident was allegedly in retaliation for the shooting of a Highwayman. Smith placed the dynamite that Injured two Wheels members and killed Earl Smith, 60, who was hit by flying lead pipe fragments as he drove by the clubhouse. The other three, club President John (Big John) Grobbins, William Parker and Leonard Moore, acted as lookouts, and pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted bombing. They face up to five years in prison when sentenced by Recorder's Court Judge Harold Hood. Smith is to be sentenced Sept.

14 and faces up to life in prison. Grobbins and four other Highwaymen were acquitted of charges that they tried to burn the Blue Angels clubhouse, 3343 S. Fort, in September 1975. Highwaymen members Ralph (Animal) Hirsch-field and James (Jonesy) Atchision co-operated with the Wayne County Organized Crime Task Force in both cases. Hirschfield was granted immunity in a murder conspiracy case.

Atchinson, who admitted helping Smith plant the dynamite in the Wheels clubhouse, pleaded guilty of second-degree murder earlier this year and got a negotiated 1 0-to-1 5-year prison term.
